ALL IN ThE FAMILY was a groundbreaking television series that tackled serious issues and had an iconic cast and can be seen in syndication on a number of television networks. Let's take a look at Archie, and Edith Bunkers, their daughter Gloria, son-in-law Mike Stivic and next- door neighbor Lionel Jefferson and see where they are at this point.

Carroll O'Conner

Carroll O'Conner

Carroll O'Conner portrayed Archie Bunker the bigoted star of ALL IN THE FAMILY which ran on CBS 1971–1979. Archie was lovable yet opinionated and often came across as just plain ignorant. O'Conner later starred in ARCHIE BUNKER'S place from 1979-1983 after Jean Stapleton left the show and her character Edith was killed off. The actor also was one of the series leads in NBC's IN THE OF THE NIGHT from 1988-1995.

In this series, Carrol O'Conner's character Chief Gilespie was far removed from Archie Bunker as he married Harriet Delong (Denise Nicols) who was black. Hugh O'Conner the adopted son of Carrol and his wife co-starred with his father and portrayed police officer Lonnie Jamison on IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT. Carrol O'Conner passed away on June 21 2001 due to a heart attack. He was 76 years old.

Jean Stapleton

Archie's wife Edith Bunker was portrayed by Jean Stapleton. Edith was written as subservient to her husband and coming across as ditsy. Archie often called her a dingbat to audience applause but today this might seem sexist and even abusive. Stapleton received 4 Emmy Awards for ALL IN THE FAMILY but she tired of the role and left the top 10 series to work on other projects. Series creator Norman Lear tried to talk the actress out of walking away but it was to no avail. Stapleton went on to roles in television movies like AUNT MARY and she made her stage debut in ONE FLEW OVER ThE COOKOO'S NEST. Jean Stapleton died at age 90 of natural causes in 2013.

Mike Evans

Michael Evans

Michael Evans portrayed Lionel Jefferson the son of the Bunker's next-door neighbors George and Louise Jefferson. Evans later starred in the spin-off series THE JEFFERSONS and was one of the show's creators and also one of the writers. He left THE JEFFERSONS and was replaced by Damon Evans but later returned to his role as Lionel. Evans was also a writer for GOOD TIMES. In December 2006 the actor died at age 57 from throat cancer.

Sally Struters

Sally Struthers

Sally Struthers portrayed the Bunkers daughter Gloria who married Michael Stivick. Gloria was outspoken in her views and often clashed with her father on political and racial issues. The actress later starred in a short-lived spin-off of ARCHIE BUNKER'S PLACE titled GLORIA where she and Mike had divorced and her character was living life as a divorcee. Struthers won two Emmy awards for her time on ALL IN THE FAMILY, and later and later portraYed Babette on GILMORE GIRLS.

She was also the voice of Rebecca Cunningham on the Disney animated series TALESPINS and voiced Charlene Sinclair on the ABC sitcom DINOSAURS. The actress has done work in the theater and has a long resume of television and film credits as well as her real-time work as an activist for several causes.

Rob Reiner

Rob Reiner

Rob Reiner's father was the iconic Carl Reiner a screenwriter and director who was responsible for THE DICK VAN DYKE show that he also starred in. THe old saying of "Like father, like son" applies here because Rob became a director also. His movies include A FEW GOOD MEN, and THIS IS SPINAL TAP.

Reiner was recognized by the Directors Guild of America Awards with nominations for WHEN ARRY MET SALLY and STAND BY ME. The latter also earned him an Academy Award for Best Picture. Rob Reiner also received Golden Globe Award nominations for Best Director. He also appeared in some of his films including THROW MAMMA FROM THE TRAIN, THE FIRST WIVES CLUB and SLEEPLESS IN SEATLE.
