Alien Technology and a Weird Sense of Humor

'MIB: International' Review!

I recently went to watch MIB: International. Well... it wasn't the best and it wasn't the worst I've seen. Let me explain why...

It's been 22 years since the first MIB landed on Earth, and that movie was basically part of my childhood because of Will Smith and how well he played his character. This time, they made a new adaptation of the movie; this time it's starring the female lead Tessa Thompson playing Agent M and Chris Hemsworth playing Agent H. The two co-starred in Thor: Ragnarok where they brought their chemistry to the movie.

Even with the weak comedy script, they managed to make the movie more humorous. In my opinion, their talents have been wasted on this film. The main reason people watched the movie is that MIB is a great movie to watch in general because of the humor and weird moments it provides.

The first MIB was more grossed-out comedy that fueled the younger generation in laughter and entertainment. International lacks this sense of comedy; there weren't any scenes that made me laugh because of how gross it was. Aliens were the main part of MIB, but in this movie, the aliens weren't threatening, surprising, or remarkable.

The main concept of the movie was to add a female agent, which they delivered quite well, but it was a letdown for a movie that should have been on the level of the first MIB. Tessa Thompson played her role very well. She was funny, interesting and real. Her appearance lightens the scenes of the movie. Then there was Chris Hemsworth; he has a knack for these types of roles, but his talent was wasted in this role. They made him appear very vapid.

In terms of the villains in this show, it was a bit of a déjà vu moment because once again, they are faced with an adversary from the imperiled planet who can shape-shift. Usually the aliens in MIB are horrifically ugly and menacing, but in this case, they were not. Rebecca Furguson was the only villain that made the movie fun, which made you wish she was the main villain.

I guess one of the great performances of the film was from the supporting character Pawny, played by Kumail Nanjiani. He was the main sidekick of the movie. Everyone loves the jokes that are made from a feisty little alien. He gave the movie a bit of comic relief, as the movie did not shape out as what it should have been.

Overall this movie was alright. It was great adding two females to the MIB franchise, as this was very needed. I was expecting more laughter and comedic moments, but the overall highlight was the direct Marvel reference from Chris Hemsworth; other than that, there weren't really any moments that made me get the hiccups. The movie borrowed too many plot lines from the first movie; for example, the plot line where a high-ranking member of an alien royal family is assassinated on Earth, leaving behind a small, seemingly terrifying weapon of mass destruction as well as being pursued by the scum of galaxies. The cast itself did pretty well in enduring in the horrible banter.

I give the movie the rating 3/5, as I am sure this movie still has the potential to grow as Men in Black: International brings a solid foundation for a new trilogy. This is something to be looking forward to in the future, however, I wouldn't suggest going to the theater to watch this film unless you are like me and you get free tickets to the movies.

The next movie reviews I will give are for Toy Story 4 and Spiderman: Far From Home!
