"Is this what it has come to?"

GoFundMe is the number 1 crowdfunding platform in this world. It is a perfect way for people who need the means to achieve a specific goal to get money from the general public.

However, because of the way money is discussed in society especially in the ways we look at “asking for money” as a thing that only broke or poor people do, the website and the act of opening a GoFundMe account has become more or less a last resort to so many people and is societally looked at as someone hitting rock bottom. Often when people announce that they're opening a GoFundMe account, the universal reaction is something along the lines of "Is this what it has come to?"

While the website doesn’t allow Nigerians open fundraisers, a number of Nigerians have still found a way to do so, usually through the account of someone who lives overseas. Of these Nigerians, some top Nigerian celebrities have also one time or another gone on to the website to solicit cash from the people of the internet.

Here are 5 Nigerian Celebrities who have at one time or another opened a GoFundMe account.

1. Uche Elendu

Nollywood actress Uche Elendu following the loot and destruction of her store amidst the #EndSARS bruhahas, has taken to GoFundMe in a bid to find financial support in rebuilding her business.

The actress using the name of her store, Killercurves Stores opened the GoFundMe account using photos from the damaged store to seek financial assistance.

The campaign reads:

20-10-2020 #ENDSARS Protest was disoriented by thugs which lead to loss of lives and properties, small businesses have been looted and shops destroyed in Lekki, Lagos Nigeria. Let’s help these affected families and small businesses before we loose more families to suffering and depression. God Bless you and God Bless our home Country Nigeria. #NewNigeria.

2. Erica

Big Brother Naija contestant, Erica, earlier this year after being disqualified from the Big Brother Naija competition famously got a GoFundMe account opened on her behalf with the goal of raising $100,000 for the reality star.

As you can imagine, this caused a huge conversation all over Nigeria with a vast number of people not able to understand why people would raise money for a disqualified candidate.

However, after the GoFundMe’s extensive run, it finally ended and raised $69,197 in total. That is no small feat.

3. Banky W

Nigerian singer Banky W while running for House of Representatives for the Eti-Osa constituency in 2019 created a GoFundMe page cleverly titled “Bank on Banky” where he sought to raise $100,000 to help his political ambition.

While the singer was not able to raise anywhere close to that amount on the website, he was still able to raise a reasonable sum of $11,733 for his campaign. Not too shabby if you ask me.

4. Samson Siasia

Former Super Eagles forward and coach, Samson Siasia, in January of 2020 started a GoFundMe campaign in order to raise money to fund his case at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in a bid to overturn the life ban slammed on him by the world football governing body, FIFA.

The Super Eagles star campaign was aimed at raising $250,000 but by January 16 of 2020, after about a week, the former coach came back disappointed to report that he had only raised $275 from just three donors.

Yikes!

*BONUS BEFORE #5 – Don Jazzy

I call this a bonus because it turned out to be a scam.

Earlier this year, around May, a GoFundMe went up with the picture of MAVIN superstar Don Jazzy, created by one Mrs Pelumi Adebayo who claimed that Don Jazzy was in need of assistance for heart disease and needed €1,000 to treat the ailment.

Side note – the person that made this just didn’t even try. You think Don Jazzy doesn’t have €1,000? Worse, which kind of heart disease would need only €1,000 to treat? So silly.

Don Jazzy got wind of the GoFundMe campaign and with a swiftness, took to his social media to brand the campaign as “FAKE”.

5. Tacha

Last year September, BBNaija star Tacha created a GoFundMe campaign aimed at raising €100,000 titled “Titans Support BBN”.

The campaign went live and was shared by Tacha and her team across her social media. Eventually, the campaign fell far from its goal but was still able to raise €1,343 in total.

That’s not toooo bad. Right?

That’s All.
