Mario's world has grown quite a bit since he faced off against Donkey Kong in 1981, especially when it comes to his supporting cast of characters. We've met Mario's brother Luigi (and their evil counterparts Wario and Waluigi), King Bowser and his koopas, Princess Toad and the entire Toad Kingdom, and countless other characters. Yet one of the most beloved characters to ever join Mario on an adventure is the great, green dinosaur Yoshi, who's getting another solo adventure.

At #E32017, Mario was confirmed to appear in two new titles: Mario + Rabbid: Kingdom Battle and Super Mario Odyssey. Fans were pleased with the plumber's upcoming console additions to the Nintendo Switch — then Nintendo continued with the announcement that Yoshi would also be arriving on the Switch in 2018.

'Yoshi' lets you play through each level twice.

Now that may sound a bit strange, but the upcoming Yoshi game will do something that hasn't been done yet: play through each level and interact with the background.

Every stage in the game has two sides, a front and a back. Playing through the level forwards, then backwards (in a sense), allows you to find new paths and secrets that you couldn't have found otherwise. Exploration is one of the biggest elements of this game, and finding secrets is something that you should be used to from previous Yoshi games.

Once you've gone through a stage forward, you'll be able to switch it around and play from the other direction — feeling as if you're playing the game backwards, but really you're on the other side of the background.

Multiplayer fun is also coming with 'Yoshi'.

Playing on the Nintendo Switch is always better with a partner, and Yoshi takes that into consideration by making some in-game puzzles infinitely easier with two players. And, since we already know that the main game has two sides, bringing another player into the world and ground-pounding with both characters can flip the stage around.

Yoshi definitely looks like it could be a great new addition to Mario's world. Check out the trailer below to see just how much fun is waiting to be had:

Yoshi is currently in development, but is confirmed to arrive sometime in 2018.
