Druids in D&D are powerful Divine Spellcasters attuned to the earth and nature. They readily draw upon the natural world and their deities to bring forth magical spells or to transform into natural creatures through Wild Shape. Druids have archetypes known as Circles, referring to specific groves or communes that teach about the Druid’s natural powers in specific ways. The Circle of Spores Druid understand their innate natural magics as part of the cycle of life to death and back again. Instead of operating solely through living organisms, the Circle of Spores specializes in the cycle of rot and decomposition through Fungi and other strange abilities to more fully explore the natural world.

These Druids are able to use magic to create new life, a strange kind of undeath. Using spores to create powerful offensive and defensive capabilities. They use their own body as a host for the natural world, creating a symbiotic relationship that allows them to use their magic in a unique way.

How to Build Your Circle of Spores Druid

All Druids benefit from a high Wisdom score because Wisdom is their spellcasting ability modifier, meaning it directly contributes to how high your Spell Save DC is, how many spells you can prepare and how easy it is for you to hit with your Spell Attack Bonus. In addition Wisdom contributes to many of your skills such as Animal Handling, Insight, Perception and Survival.

Because many of the Circle of Spores Druid’s abilities are close range, their secondary ability score can be either Dexterity or Constitution. Dexterity helps boost your Druid’s armor class and increases skills like Stealth which make you harder to see and allows you to hide. But, Constitution gives you additional hit points and helps with Constitution saving throws to avoid dropping concentration on your spells. Personally, I would put more emphasis on Constitution, as your armor class is never going to get particularly high as a Druid to begin with, instead focusing on higher hit points and using Wild Shape uses to use your Circle of Spores abilities to keep you in the fight.

The Best Races for Circle of Spores

With the new Tasha’s ability score rules, choosing a race specifically for an ability score bonus doesn’t particularly matter any more, as such, put your bonus in Wisdom first, and then a second bonus in Constitution or Dexterity as you see fit. For more mechanical benefits, consider the Fairy race, as these characters have an innate connection to the magical and natural worlds. They also gain spells such as Faerie Fire and Enlarge/Reduce which make them optimal for a Druid. Another good option is the Firbolg race, another race closely tied to the natural world, who can speak to plants and turn invisible briefly. Variant Humans gain a bonus to all ability scores, which can make for a more versatile Druid, or Gnomes for their magical resistances!

Best Feats for Circle of Spores

If you have already pushed your Wisdom score to 20, you might be thinking of taking a feat instead of your next Ability Score Increase. War Caster is one of the most powerful feats for any spellcasting class because it grants Advantage on Constitution saves to maintain Concentration on their spells. It also allows your Druid to carry a staff and a shield and still use Somatic Components for your spells, which might mean you can increase your Armor Class. Lastly, since you are likely already in melee as a Circle of Spores Druid, it gives you an additional option for Attacks of Opportunity.

If you have lower Constitution or not enough hit points, instead you might consider choosing Resilient, and adding to your Constitution. In addition, this will give you proficiency in Constitution Saves, which will help you maintain concentration more often. Best Spell Choices for Circle of Spores.

Spore Druids have access to some consistent spells that they do not have to prepare each day such as; Chill Touch, Blindness/Deafness, Gentle Repose, Animate Dead, Gaseous Form, Blight, Contagion, Confusion and Cloudkill. Consider spells that are useful from close range as your abilities work best in melee, or spells that fit your character such as those from the Necromancy school. Thorn Whip, Entangle and Spike Growth are exceptional options for controlling the battlefield. While Lesser Restoration, Healing Word and Aura of Vitality will help you keep your frontline working at top capacity.

At higher levels consider spells like Regeneration, Greater Restoration, or Feeblemind, Awaken and Insect Plague for a more combat oriented spell. Remember as a Druid, you do not function well as a primary damage dealer, but your ability to heal and manipulate the battlefield are outstanding.
