Has Tarkov Gotten Easier or Harder?
(Intro) Tarkov has always be defined by its difficulty. Whether someone finding it insufferably challenging or another person on-ramping into the game with relative ease, what made Tarkov so notorious back in the day was its general difficulty. Anyone you would hear talk about the game would always mention first and foremost that it was one of the hardest games they’d ever played, especially for an online FPS. And to an extent, even in 2025, I agree with them. However, the game has changed a lot over those years. Additions, mechanics, audiences, expectations; EFT is not what it once was, for better or worse. And one of the things that has changed so much was the perceived difficulty of the game. Once again, people who thought it was hard still think that some think the opposite is true, and some have flip flopped their opinion for a variety of reasons. So today, let’s dive into those reasons and see if the game has gotten more difficult, easier, stayed the same or perhaps a secret fourth option; it was always both.

Is Tarkov Having an Identity Crisis?
(Intro) As the release of 1.0 looms evermore over the horizon, I think it’s important to have a conversation about the identity of Tarkov and where it stands today. At this point, Tarkov has created a name for itself by being, from the outside looking in, a difficult first-person extraction shooter where you lose your gear if you fall during your raids. And for players who have any length of time in this game, they know that’s only part of the whole story, While yes, it’s an extraction shooter and you lose your stuff, everything else you may hear about if you aren’t an active player doesn’t line up with what the gameplay loop actually ends up being most of the time. So much so, that after everything that has happened and now that the hardcore wipe is over, people have been asking what the heck is Tarkov supposed to be. What’s the identity of the game and does it even understand itself anymore. These are solid questions to ask. Again; we’re so close to release, that this is the worst time for the game to try and figure out who or what it’s supposed to be. And the developers are gonna’ have to figure that out. So, let’s have a conversation about what Tarkov is supposed to be as a game, how it has strayed away from that philosophy over the years, and how it may be having an identity crisis, at the absolute worst possible time.

Vision Versus Reality in Tarkov
(Intro) With everything currently going on with Tarkov, from the hardcore wipe to its soft cancelation, one thing that has become somewhat apparent when looking at all of this from a wider lens, is that Tarkov’s scale and scope has shifted so much over the years. I mean, it’s kind of obvious when you say it out loud but really think about it: this game went from a small niche title that was specifically being created for players who enjoy a much more hands-off immersive approach to a first-person shooter. Skipping over many of the more conventional measures we are accustomed to from annual franchises and other titles. But Tarkov was willingly going against the grain in terms of gameplay, expectations and scope. It wasn’t trying to be the biggest, but something true to itself and to those that played and experienced the game from start to finish. And over the years, there has been a tangible shift in priorities; a necessary evil to see the game through to the end. And sadly, that has alienated some people from ever coming back. What I wanted to focus on today, is the original idea, and missions statement from BSG and Tarkov, and how eventually, it all took a sharp turn into something that is still very much Tarkov but has lost some of that original essence and edge to it. What the definition of a hard game in the context of EFT means and disconnected things feel now, unfortunately right before they release 1.0.

(Intro) We officially have Tarkov’s release date. BSG not too long ago put out a cinematic trailer that revealed the official 1.0 release date: November 15th, 2025. I’m honestly surprised it was released this way; I figured they would’ve made more of a deal out of it. But it kind of just popped up one day in the afternoon and now, here we are. That’s barely under three months away. And honestly, a lot still needs to happen either before, or on that release date. And that’s what we’re going to discuss; the final real stretch, what needs to change inside of the game, what we could expect and whether or not BSG can actually do this. Can they? Hardcore Tarkov is Over
(Intro) Well, after just over six weeks, the community can say the hardcore wipe has come to a close. It didn’t go out with a bang, but instead, a small whimper. On August 20th, BSG released a series of patch notes that reverted almost all of the changes that were associated with the hardcore wipe. There are a couple of mechanical differences that are still prevalent from the hardcore wipe, but most of the grievances of players have been reverted to what they were like in previous wipes. This whole thing has been a crazy ride. Some of it good, some of it interesting but not flushed out completely. And some of it utterly trash. So, let’s go over what has been reverted, where we stand now that hardcore is no more, and just have a small postmortem for the challenge and all the headaches that surrounded the idea. It could’ve been good; it should’ve been good. But sadly, things did not go exactly as planned.

The Lessons to Learn from this Hardcore Wipe
(Intro) This hardcore wipe has been a tumultuous experience since day one. Even before it released and we were seeing all the incoming changes prior to the wipe, there was this tepid hesitance in the air from the community that this might end poorly. Well sadly, it kind of did. Issues with features we were forced to engage with, problems for many with the pacing of the entire experience, and a general disdain for having to be forced to play with it whether you wanted to or not. And the part that stinks the most? This could’ve all been avoided. There were many different ways BSG could’ve handled this hardcore wipe and made it an experience that while still not for everyone, something that people were at least willing to play with. The game needed a shake up like this; but not exactly like this. So today, instead of talking about what went wrong, let’s go over what BSG could’ve done to get it right and the different lessons that can be learned going forward into 1.0.
