There are a few different ways that games can be turned into movies or TV shows. Often, the rights to the game are acquired by a film or TV production company, and then a script is written that adapts the story and characters of the game into a format that can be filmed or televised.

The production company will then hire actors, build sets, and film the movie or TV show, using special effects and other techniques to bring the game to life on the screen. The finished product is then released in theaters or on television for audiences to watch.

It’s worth noting that the process of adapting a game into a movie or TV show can be quite complex, and it’s not always successful. Some game adaptations have been well-received by audiences and critics, while others have not.

In this post, I will discuss a few of the most successful film adaptations or popular video games.

1 — League of Legends

League of Legends (LoL) is a multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game developed by Riot Games. It was released in 2009 and has since become one of the most popular games worldwide, with a large and active player base.

The lore of League of Legends is a complex and ever-evolving part of the game. It is set in a fantasy world called Runeterra, which is filled with a variety of different nations, each with its own unique culture and history.

Arcane is a TV show set in the world of League of Legends and focuses on the conflict between Piltover and Zaun, two cities known for their technological advancement and social inequality.

The show follows the lives of two champions as they navigate the complex political landscape of these cities and the repercussions of the development of Hextech, a powerful form of magic. The story delves into the themes of progress, power, and the struggle to maintain balance in a rapidly changing world.

2 — The Witcher

The Witcher is a series of action role-playing games developed by CD Projekt Red. The games are based on a series of fantasy novels by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski and follow the story of Geralt of Rivia, a “witcher” who is a trained monster hunter.

The Witcher is set in a fantasy world called the Continent, which is filled with a variety of different cultures, races, and political factions. The story follows Geralt of Rivia, a witcher who is a mutated, monster-hunting mercenary.

Witchers are trained from a young age to hunt and kill dangerous creatures, and they are enhanced with alchemical compounds and special training to make them more effective at their job.

The Witcher is a television series based on the Witcher novels by Andrzej Sapkowski. The show was developed by Lauren Schmidt Hissrich and premiered on Netflix in 2019. It stars Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia, Anya Chalotra as Yennefer of Vengerberg, and Freya Allan as Ciri.

The show is set in the Continent, a fantasy world filled with magic and supernatural beings. It follows the story of Geralt, a solitary witcher who is a mutated monster hunter, and his encounters with powerful sorceresses, dangerous beasts, and a young princess with a mysterious connection to Geralt.

3 — Sonic the Hedgehog

Sonic the Hedgehog is a long-running series of video games featuring the character Sonic, a blue anthropomorphic hedgehog who can run at superhuman speeds. The series was developed and published by Sega, and the first game in the series was released in 1991.

The Sonic the Hedgehog series is set in a fictional universe known as The Sonic World. In this universe, there is a planet called Mobius, which is home to various anthropomorphic animals, including Sonic and his friends.

The main antagonist of the series is Dr. Eggman, a mad scientist who seeks to conquer the world and create robots to do his bidding. Sonic and his friends often team up to stop Dr. Eggman and his plans for world domination.

The Sonic the Hedgehog movie is a live-action/animated film based on the Sonic the Hedgehog video game series. The movie was released in 2020 and features the voices of Ben Schwartz as Sonic and Jim Carrey as Dr. Eggman.

In the movie, Sonic is a blue hedgehog who is forced to leave his home on an alternate Earth and flee to our Earth, where he befriends a small-town police officer named Tom Wachowski (played by James Marsden). Together, they team up to stop Dr. Eggman, who has come to our Earth in search of Sonic’s magical powers.

4 — Halo

Halo is a series of first-person shooter video games developed by 343 Industries and published by Xbox Game Studios. The series centers around an interstellar war between humanity and an alien alliance known as the Covenant.

The player assumes the role of Master Chief, a cybernetically enhanced supersoldier, as he battles against the Covenant and other threats in the 26th century.

At the heart of the Halo universe is the concept of the “Halos,” a network of ring-shaped megastructures that were built by an ancient race known as the Forerunners. The Halos are capable of destroying all life in the universe, and they play a central role in the games' story.

The main protagonist of the series is Master Chief, a cybernetically enhanced supersoldier who serves as the leader of a group of soldiers known as the Spartans. Master Chief and the Spartans are instrumental in the fight against the Covenant and other threats to humanity.

Halo is a live-action television series based on the video game series Halo. It is set in the 26th century and follows the story of an interstellar war between humanity and an alien alliance known as the Covenant.

The show will combine personal storylines with action, adventure, and a detailed portrayal of the future. The series will explore the characters’ struggles and triumphs as they fight for survival in a world of danger and conflict.

Final Words

Although I haven't included all the video games which have been adapted to the film industry, there are still a few great examples.

But that’s not to say that all video game films are great. There have been a few absolute dumpster fires which I may talk about in a future post.
