Did You Know Video Games Are Being Used For Military Training?
Who could have thought even the military would use video games? They have good reasons.
Recently, as I was scrolling through Reddit, I came across a post about video games used for military training purposes. Then I came across many resources on the web, including military sites.
I knew video games were being used for training in various other fields, but I never thought they could be used explicitly in the military. I further investigated it and found several reasons that I’d like to share with you.
In this post, I will discuss how the military is or will be using video games for training purposes.
When did the military start using video games for training?
The use of video games for military training is a relatively new concept but one that has gained significant attention in recent years. The military has been using video games as a training tool for soldiers for several reasons.
The use of commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) video games for military training began to gain more attention in the 2000s, with the US military using games such as America’s Army and Full Spectrum Warrior as training tools.
The use of video games for training has continued to evolve and expand in recent years. Today, the military is using a wide variety of video games and simulations, including virtual reality, augmented reality, and other advanced technologies, to train soldiers in various skills.
It’s worth noting that the use of video games for military training is still a relatively new and evolving field, and the military is constantly experimenting and refining the use of video games for training purposes.
Why is the military using video games for training?
The military is using video games for training for several reasons, as I introduce below.
Cost-effectiveness
Video games are a cost-effective way to train soldiers. They are cheaper to develop and maintain than live-fire training exercises, and they can be used to train soldiers in various skills.
Safety and Security
Video games provide a safe and controlled environment for soldiers to practice and hone their skills.
They can simulate real-life combat scenarios and allow soldiers to practice decision-making, teamwork, and other critical skills in a low-stakes environment.
Customization and flexibility
Video games can be easily customized and updated to reflect current events and changing tactics. They can be used to train soldiers in various skills, from marksmanship to language proficiency.
Realism
Video games can provide realistic simulations of real-life combat scenarios, allowing soldiers to train in a more immersive environment with a high level of realism.
Efficiency
Video games can be used to train soldiers in a shorter period of time than traditional training methods, allowing them to be ready for deployment more quickly.
Repeatability
Video games can be repeated multiple times, allowing soldiers to practice and perfect their skills in a realistic environment.
Accessibility
Video games are easily accessible and can be played anywhere, which allows soldiers to train at their own pace and on their own schedule.
How can video games be better used in the future for military training?
There are several ways that video games could be better used in the future for military training:
Virtual reality
Virtual reality technology could be used to create even more realistic and immersive training simulations. This would allow soldiers to train in a more lifelike environment, which could help to better prepare them for real-life combat scenarios.
Artificial intelligence
Artificial intelligence could be used to create more realistic and adaptive training simulations. This would allow soldiers to train against more intelligent and dynamic opponents, which could better prepare them for real-life combat scenarios.
Real-time feedback
Video games could be used to provide soldiers with real-time feedback on their performance. This would allow them to make adjustments and improvements to their skills in real-time, which could lead to more effective training.
Personalization
Video games could be used to create personalized training programs for individual soldiers. This would allow soldiers to train in areas where they need the most improvement, which could lead to more effective training.
Integration with other training methods
Video games could be used in conjunction with other training methods, such as live-fire exercises and role-playing scenarios, to create a more well-rounded and practical training experience for soldiers.
Realistic Scenarios
Video games could be developed to simulate realistic scenarios that are more similar to the actual conditions that soldiers would face in the field, including weather conditions, terrains, and cultural aspects.
Gamification of other areas of training
Video games could be used to gamify other areas of training, such as language and cultural training, making it more engaging and effective.
Real-time data collection
Video games could be used to collect real-time data on soldiers’ performance and behavior, which could be used to improve training methods and better prepare soldiers for real-life combat scenarios.
Summary
The military has been using video games as a training tool for soldiers for several reasons: cost-effectiveness, safety, customization and flexibility, realism, efficiency, repeatability, and accessibility.
The use of video games for military training is a relatively new concept but one that has gained significant attention in recent years.
The military has been using different types of games for training purposes, from first-person shooter games to flight simulators and tactical games that provide realistic scenarios for soldiers to practice their decision-making, critical thinking, and teamwork skills.
The use of video games for training is still a new and evolving field, and the military is constantly experimenting and refining the use of video games for training purposes.
