Why ‘Frozen’ taught me to “Let it go.”

And why it has NOTHING to do with the fact that it’s annoying now, and no one, not even YOU can deny it!

Disney princesses have always had their way with words. Especially, when those words are vocalized and laced with stark emotions over a sea of symphonies and strings. Everyone loves the feeling they get when the main character of a heart-filled adventure/romance/comedy/fantasy/ blah/blah/blah, reaches their final epiphany and such… Disney’s hit movie ‘Frozen’ is no exception. And I mean that in the best of ways of course.., but also not really... Here’s where you might get confused. Don’t worry, I completely understand. You’re thinking “oh, here we go.” Or, “What could possibly be wrong with the beloved ’Frozen‘ movie?”

The answer is nothing... Nothing is wrong with it at all. Not the movie at least. I just wanted to get your attention. Now that I’ve got it, and if you haven’t left already, I’d STILL very much like to make the point that my “genius-ly” derived, and sarcastically thought provoking title suggests. Ah yes... “Let it go”. It is a beautiful, potent melody indeed. This song is packed with so many lessons and salient perspectives, and most notably, it‘s a very powerful take on the hard and long forgotten saying... “Let it go”…

Teamed with stunning visuals and stacked to the brim with euphoric undertones, ”Let it go”, is the perfect masterpiece. It will live on, and continue to give hundreds of thousands of parents and single adults migraines for generations to come... “Let it go”... And what better way is there than to sew it into the very fabric of every willing, and unwilling mind that trails near, than by repeating it over, and over, and over, and over, and over again in a high pitched falsetto; THEN letting it go on to be one of the worlds greatest hits, so that it can CONTINUE to spread the word in honor of a fictional character, whose final decision was to cut everyone off because she was sick and tired of being judged for having the ability to make better slushees than them. “Turn your back on everything.” - Mahatma Gandhi… I think.

You can’t blame her for making this decision however. People wanted to burn her shit up Salem style. They were afraid of what she could do to them because people like to take everything personally and get in their feelings even when it’s not about them. She was different, and misunderstood. She had the power to hurt people, but that was neither her goal, nor her intention. It wasn’t HER fault she was different! Sound familiar? Hey! YOU brought it there… not me. You‘re just proving my point... Anyways, even I have caught myself mid-hum on many occasions to the bewitching tune of “Let it go”. It’s CATCHY! One can’t help BUT to hum along! Especially since it is now one of the first things to jump out of my subconscious whenever ANYONE says it in a normal sentence. Which, only up until recently, ACTUALLY meant what it was SUPPOSED to mean! No, no… Why would anyone EVER have a problem with FROZEN?!

Let’s be honest though. As a music maker myself, I have found that the most annoying compositions are often the most clung to by listeners. Why could this be, other than the fact that we are simple creatures, and repetition is the mother of all learning? Perhaps I’ll dig deeper into this question in a later entry. For now, let’s stay on topic. I’ll bring it to a close shortly... In a way, ‘Frozen’ is one of the main inspirations for my newly developed attitude towards the entertainment industry as a whole. I know now, that people ONLY want to be entertained, and that's it. They don’t REALLY want a life lesson. Let alone, from a cartoon! There would just be more of a reason to look at themselves. Yuck! That kind of thing could lead to symptoms such as, “i‘m the problem-itis' ', or “there’s something wrong with me syndrome”. What did we talk about earlier? People love to take everything personally, and end up in their feels… No bueno!

In conclusion, if we really wanted to ”Let it go”, whatever “IT” is, we would. No one needs a troubled, rich, fantasy girl with magical powers, to scream it at them to the point where it’s all that they hear whenever they‘re talking themselves through REAL issues and decide to use a common phrase to ease their spirits. It’s fucked up... but I’m not pointing fingers. We’re all at fault for letting things like this slide. Every single one of us is walking around carrying a Santa Clause sized bag FULL of movie references and inside jokes that we use and substitute in the place of active thinking. And I might be snowballing it here, pun intended, but it’s probably one of the mechanisms behind our shortening attention spans, and lack of originality in everything that we do. That being said, I’ll leave you with a question. Am I taking this too far.., or should I just…?
