If this, then that

The gems that changed my way of thinking

If you are in any way someone like me, who’s always living in the clouds, creating my own ideas, obsessed with the unknown, thirsty for history and it’s knowledge, and wondering if conspiracy theories are a thing, then these suggestions are suited for you.

I'm not someone to have just one favorite type of music or a favorite type of literature. I just like everything that resonates with my soul and the things I’ve been through and probably even my own expectations of the future. So picking out these particular shows and movies wasn’t an easy task for my indecisive personality, but I can honestly say they are a must see depending on what mood you may be in at any given moment.

Whenever I’m feeling gloomy about the world and it’s cruel reality, I tend to rely on this Stephen Spielberg 1993 epic, ‘Schindler’s list’, which is not only the first movie I remember watching as a kid but also one of the first movies based on true events I remember seeing. Its always able to give me hope.

Up until that point, WWII was just a mere story to me, it wasn’t as harsh as it became once I watched the horrific crimes committed with my own eyes through this heart warming movie. I can say that because of it, my compassion and understanding for world history changed completely.

So if you’re a fan of history and are capable of holding still for two hours in front of a black and white screen that explains and shows the heartless actions of man, while also proving that there is always good somehow, somewhere, and we are just not paying enough attention it, then this is must see.

And since we are watching movies based on real life events (in this case the Holocaust) with a hope that the world around you changes, then ‘Life is beautiful’ is where you’re headed next.

This 1998 film by Roberto Benigni, was able to warm the hearts of the viewers by showing how a father desperately tries to make his sons time in the concentration camps a mere game, and bring hope to his wife.

The movie had me crying as a little girl, and as an adult for the wonderful and magnificent things your parents are capable of doing to make your reality a better place. It will definitely make you analyze your parents efforts and feel grateful for everything they’ve done for you, as well as help you get back to that feeling that life isn't so bad, and is indeed beautiful.

But if you’re just trying to get your mind off of things and you’re feeling intelligent and want to put your brain to work and get your mind blown, then this movie by Christopher Nolan will put your rubix cube abilities to the test in ‘Inception’

If you’re a fan of Leonardo DiCaprio and his amazing acting skills, or his irresistible looks, this movie is the one you must have.

DiCaprio plays the role of a thief that has the ability to enter people’s dreams. He gets hired by a millionaire and is promised a gift he can’t resist. The job is to plant an idea into a millionaires arch enemies mind while he sleeps, at the same time he’s fighting with a demon of his own.

As a creative spiritual person this film speaks to me in different ways. It resonates with both and makes you love, for a moment, this world full of eternal possibilities.

Keeping up with the list in mind bending games, take a look at this film by Bress and Grubber that will take you to an excruciating experience of an existential crisis in ‘The butterfly effect’ starring Ashton Kutcher.

The film describes the life of a child who suffers from terrible headaches. After speaking to his psychiatrist he finds out he can alter the present by traveling to the past through his journals and adjusting his reality. But soon he discovers that any change made in the past, no matter how small, can drastically change his present and affect the lives of those around him.

The film is able to bring you to your knees and make you think for a moment about your every move and how everything has a domino effect in life. It taught me how to be nice and think before I act no matter how small the moment may feel.

If you’re not into the Holocaust, history, or you’re not interested in mind bending games but instead, you like gambling and everything that comes with the territory, or were even just wondering what that type of life that must be like, you are going to love this women empowered movie by Aaron Sorkin based on a true story called ‘Molly’s game’

This movie shows the life of a former Olympian running a high-stakes poker game for the rich and famous, until she gets too high to keep climbing the ranks of the gambling scene and has to make a life changing decision to protect those with secrets that have screwed her in the past.

This movie is about more than just the world of gambling and drug abuse, it shows how desperate women can become in order to prove to men that we can be better than them.

After watching Molly’s game you might be feeling like a badass, so here's a show to feed on that energy by Scott Frank and Allan Scott. ‘The Queens Gambit’.

This short series shows the life of an orphan, who at the age of 9, develops an uncanny knack for chess and becomes the first professionally recognized female chess player in the world; and as we all know, games come with their own world of trauma, drama, and drugs.

And even if this limited series was not based on true events, the directors did an amazing job by making you feel it was, or that it could be, a powerful men's world where women are desperately trying to prove their worth. You know, like reality.

Once I started searching for suggestions on my Netflix lists I felt inspired and it somehow became easier to remember all the best movies I’ve ever watched. And with that I was able to make my list for you a little bit longer as well as filled with different styles and emotions.

And It was then when I remembered one of the first movies ever, that made me question my whole existence and wonder if my life was merely a made up story. It made me wonder if one day I’ll wake up in a hospital room, finding out my life has just been a dream.

This movie directed by Shyamalan truly makes my toe curl in ‘Split’

The film shows a man that has 23 different personalities, living in one body. All revolving around the idea of an entity they call "THE BEAST", which is one of the personalities, and they all exist on the belief that they are different people.

The film will have your mind so curled up, it gets to a point where you’re not even thinking, it’s like you’re numb and suddenly you’re the character trying to understand where your ideas come from.

And if you’re still not doubting your existence after watching Split then this classic by David Fincher starring the all time handsome Brad Pitt, and the great Morgan Freeman, ‘Seven’, will have you wondering about the purpose of your soul.

This movie shows the life of two detectives, one that’s starting fresh on his career, about to have a baby and trying to make his entrance into the detective world, the other one about to retire. Both men are faced with the case of a serial killer like no other, that ends up uniting them when they encounter the atrocious crimes of the murderer.

This movie will have you in suspense, biting your nails, and believing in the Bible and its cardinal sins every second of the way, with an ending that will knock your socks off.

Truth is, I could go on forever guiding you through all the shows and movies you must see and everything that goes through my mind and the reasons I picked them for you. But honestly speaking I don’t really have a method or system in place for how I pick which movies I watch. I watch movies depending on how I’m feeling at the moment and that’s the reason I made this list. Above being my all time favorites, which I call gems on a screen, regardless of how I’m feeling any given day, I’m always able to watch these chosen eight.

-If ‘Schindler’s list’ then ‘life is beautiful’

-If ‘Inception’ then ‘The butterfly effect’

-If ‘Molly’s game’ then ‘The queens gambit’

-If ‘Split’ then ‘Seven’
