The Midway
“I’ll get you the money by the end of this week, Mr. Herman,” Tony promised. Mr. Herman gingerly dusted off the cuff of his Italian suit. “This is your last chance, Tony. If you can’t scrape up the money for this toilet, I’m going to flush it,” he said, throwing a disgusted look around the café.

Miracle in My Minitank
As my WIDS-20, more fondly known as my Minitank, pulled up to the dilapidated remains that once were Westerlane Industries back in the early 21st century, I reassessed my equipment. Air quality in the year 2201 was between hazardous and lethal, so I needed my bodysuit and oxygen filtration mask to be in prime working order if I was going to attempt this salvage. I didn't have much time left.

All Fire
A fiery spirit, that's what we're called. I never thought it would be literal. I'm an Aries by birth, but I always thought I was a pretty reserved and quiet person. It was one tiny incident. Just a small one. Nothing that would get most people's panties in a twist. But me, I have no clue what happened. Maybe it was the cherry on top of an already toppling cake, the accumulation of bad moment after bad moment that day. Either way, the volcano erupted.

Dressed As People
The old man walked slowly, bent and crumpled like a bad draft in the trash bin. He was fast for his age—leaning over a cane, focused on not slipping—but for the streets of New York he dragged. Logan paced respectfully behind the mister, checking his newsfeed through the shattered screen of his phone.

Flower Field
Things would be different if I hadn't opened that chest. But I did…. I’ll tell you how it began. I sprang out of bed before the sun rose. I went and collected water for the kettle. Grabbed an egg and some bread and ate that for breakfast. I then got ready for the day and cleaned around the house. I grabbed my satchel and got ready to leave. I needed to go down by the river side to collect some more herbs. The herbs by the riverside have healing properties and help small wounds heal faster. I ran out because I used most of my supplies on small critters. Whenever I'm outside and see a small critter injured I help them. I know I probably shouldn't lend a hand, because they probably got that injury from another animal or from wildlife situations and that they will heal on their own without my help. But I can't help it, when I see a small critter in need, then I just have to help them. As I walked through the forest to reach the river, I collected other herbs to use for food later. When I finally reached the riverside, I started to collect the herbs I needed to restock on. As I did, I see that a mama bear and her cub are at the river’s edge, to get their food for the day. I stayed longer to watch them. As I stared at them I made eye contact with the baby bear and waved at it. I am in awe of its adorableness. You would think I would return after collecting the things I need, but that would mean my day would be over. So instead I hopped on stones to cross the river and made it to the other side. Beyond this forest is a field of flowers. So I made my way through the trees and finally reached the field. The flowers there are so beautiful. I walk closer to them and smell them, tell them how pretty they are and talk to them. I might not have much to say, but boy do they have stories to tell, but today I don’t have time for flowers stories. I also know that fairies like to hang around flower fields. I’ve always wanted to meet one, but I know that they are very shy creatures. So I don't try to seek them out or hunt for them. I don’t want them to feel threatened; when they come to this beautiful flower field. The wind is blowing gently and the flowers begin to dance. I decided to dance along with them. When I was dancing I took a wrong turn and got twisted up in my own legs and fell. As I got up I noticed I had fallen on some flowers. I felt so bad because I knew that the herbs I had, couldn't heal the wounds I inflicted on them. So instead, I plucked the ones I bent and started weaving them into a crown. I placed the crown upon my head and prayed for their return to another wonderful land. The wind continued to blow and some dandelions flew away in the breeze and I joined them. I spun and spun and spun, but I had to stop myself spinning because I was getting too dizzy and I did not want to fall again. As I focus my vision, I see that there was a chest a few steps away. How odd it’s here in this flower field. I step towards it and observe the outside of this chest. I looked around to see if there were any footprints or any wagon prints, on the ground nearby. If this chest had fallen out of one or someone dropped it by mistake. But no prints of any sorts were around. What I found peculiar was that at the back of the chest was a Rhododendron flower. It was the only one of its kind here. I felt sorry for it, for being all alone in the field. But I also applauded it for its strength and bravery for being able to survive out here alone. What I should have taken notice of, was this flower's meaning; this flower means danger and beware. I glanced up at the sky and noticed it had darkened. I said my goodbyes to the flowers and left, I returned home, lit a candle and began to make supper. Took some herbs I collected from the forest and some bread and ate that for supper. I cleaned up the mess I made and got ready for bed. Had some water from the kettle and went to bed. As I lay there I wondered who could have left that chest there; and if they were desperately searching for it. I do hope they find it before something bad happens to it. I wondered what is inside of it?.. I fell asleep after those thoughts or at least; that is what I remember doing before.. Before… before.. I awaken with a bright light in my eyes. I looked around me, and I was in the flower field. How did I get there? Why am I there? I look in front of me and my right arm has opened the chest. The light that is in my eyes was the moon light reflected against the gold coins inside the chest. What have I done! Now the person who left that chest there can not get it back.. You might ask, why not? Here’s a little background. Here in the Narve Kingdom, there are adventurers and merchants who battle monsters in dungeons, in search of treasure filled chests. This caused chaos over the kingdom. In order to control this chaos, the King cast a spell over the land. The spell made it so that whoever opens the chest is the only one who can retrieve the items in the chest. When they open the chest, the person receives a little black notebook. A magic black notebook. Whoever opens the book, has their name forever engraved on the cover. Each notebook that is connected to a chest, lists the contents of the chest. The book is only visible to the bearer of the notebook. To retrieve the items from the chest, the bearer simply has to say them aloud. So, I can’t give the owner back his chest, that is not how it works. Because I am holding a black little notebook with my name on the front. As I looked in my book, I couldn’t believe how much he was losing because of me… 20,000 gold coins… On no! What have I done?!!

The assignment
As usual I wait until the absolute last minute to start my class assignment. “I’m in college now you’d think I know how to be responsible,” I say aloud to myself. Luckily for me I flew home for the weekend to visit my mom on her birthday. I live in New Orleans and go to school in upstate New York. I usually do not visit home because the plane tickets are too expensive, but after my grandmother won 20,000 in her bingo tournament, I started coming home more often. I now come home for Holidays and important birthdays, such as my moms. “Since we all come from such different cultures and backgrounds, this project will focus on your unique backstory. Pick an item that has sentimental value to you and you will do a presentation on it….due on Friday, October 13th.” I had 3 weeks to start up this project and I waited until the last possible week to start it. I’m thinking of what I could possibly do a whole presentation on and could not think of anything interesting that I own. I decided to make my way upstairs in the attic to see what might be laying around. I am greeted by massive cobwebs and old empty cardboard boxes. “Unless my professor is interested in the spiders that live in Louisiana, I think I’m wasting my time up here.” I laugh to myself. As I was about to turn back down the stairs and just make something up for my project, I saw a glimmer of light coming from the very back corner of my attic. It was a metal chest that had my grandmother’s initials on it. I walk over to the intriguing chest and heavily observe it. It had chains wrapped around it, with an old rusty lock attached to the front. The metals were rusted and the chest appeared to be a rustic orange color. The lock was so old and worn down that I opened it with just a light kick. I shuddered at the sound of the lock dropping to the old wooden floor. I got a very eerie feeling from this chest. I decided to slightly open the chest and peek inside. “There has got to be something in here good enough for my project.” I sigh, now growing impatient. I open the box completely now, “Family photos, more family photos, and old watches.” I sigh, “none of this will do” I say aloud to myself. Maybe I should look somewhere else. Just as I was about to close the rusty chest, from the corner of my eye I see a little black leather book with the words “non aperire- Do not Open” carved into the leather. “Now this… looks interesting” I say. The book was sewn closed and had a mini rusty lock on it. The lock was barely hanging on, and the stitching in the book was very worn. I lightly tug on the lock and it falls to the ground almost instantly. The book looked like it was hundreds of years old. It had a hardcover with a spider engraved on the front, with a blue stone as the body. I start skimming through the pages, and only find a bunch of words that appear to be written in latin that I cannot understand. There are a few rough translations to English but the pages are so yellowed and old it’s hard to make out what it says. “Nunc Ignem” I whisper to myself. Just then, the page I was reading lit on fire. I gasped and threw the book across the room. “A...a spell book?!”

The Legend of Blue Whale's Treasure
The Legend of Blue Whale's Treasure by Jon Plante She frequently gets immersed in her own thoughts while driving, then snaps back to reality and finds that she drove to the wrong place. She always regains reality while still driving. Today though, she regains herself in a strange circular room. The room has no windows, and no doors, and cats everywhere. A black cat with one unusually large eye glares at her. She frantically runs her hands all over the walls looking for a door. She’s seen Forensic Files; she knows she dies here. She doesn’t dare scream for help and risk arousing the attention of whoever put her here. Exhausted, she slumps to the floor and reaches to pet one of the cats, while wondering if they’ll eat her face off when she dies in here. Or perhaps she’s already dead, she thinks. Several cats come to her and rub their heads on her. Each cat has a one-dollar bill twist tied to its collar. She used to knit with her grandmother who said it helped to calm her nerves. She sets about untwisting each tie off each cat and stacking up the dollars, letting the rhythmic, mindless motion soothe her. When she finishes with the final cat, she counts the money $63. Then all of the cats flash different colors and disappear. She looks around the room, puzzled. They were all gone, even old stink eye.
