Speculation – The Real Reason Why Crime Syndicates Are So Interested In Tatooine

The Furthest Planet From The Center Of The Universe

Tatooine seems to be quite the hub of scum and villainy and it is just relegated to Mos Esiley. The planet is the home of various criminals like Jabba the Hutt, one of the most notorious crime lords of all time. For a planet that Luke once considered farthest from anything interesting, it is the center of underworld activities.

Now, the Pyke syndicate appears to have a vested interest in the planet, wanting to make it a part of their own criminal empire. Why is this planet that Luke once thought was the most boring place really a big deal? Well, it is hard to say at the moment, but perhaps there is something here on the planet that everyone wants. Maybe it is something old Jabba knew about but chose to keep the secret to himself. Perhaps the secret to Tatooine…is water?

Once upon a time, Tatooine was a water world. It was once a place filled with water until something happened to turn it into a desert planet.  However, it does seem that water is still a vital resource for the planet. It can still be found, even if only in small fruits. That does not mean that the planet is high and dry. There could be stocks of water somewhere on the planet, stocks that could prove quite valuable to anyone who wants to make a name for themselves in the Outer Rim.

Of course, this is just one reason why the underworld is interested in the planet. The other reason could be something that water is always used for.

Ports.

Hub Of Crime

Perhaps another reason why criminals are so interested in Tatooine is that it makes for a good port hub, a place where ships carrying cargos of all types can land for a few moments before going off into the rest of the Outer Rim Territories or other areas of the galaxy. This little docking bay would make for a good transit for smuggling of all sorts of things, be it materials, or goodness knows, people as well. It is a good location for a docking port where anything and anyone can do anything they like.

This would make Tatooine a lot more strategic location compared to what someone like Luke has said about his homeworld. It would be the ideal spot for various crime families, syndicates, and other unsavory types to come and occupy the planet. In addition, it would also be beneficial for Imperial forces who profit from allowing such things to happen.

Crime is like a river. It needs various places to flow through. If Tatooine is a lake that allows the river to flow into, then the crime lords like Jabba the Hutt would want to try to control the lake. Tatooine is just the perfect place to rest and recoup as well as the place for all sorts of criminal roots to settle in and grow.

However, what if there is something else on the planet? Some sort of resource, or something greater?

Water.

Water World

Tatooine was once a world filled to the brim with water. It had seas that rivaled Kamino. Perhaps this desert world still has some hidden water reserves here that criminal organizations may want that could make them quite rich. It would be a resource truly worthy of them and make them the envy of the criminal world. After all, resources are something that all criminals want. They could bring in a whole lot of money in the process.

Tatooine may seem like a desert world but it is one of great importance to these criminal gangs and organizations. The Emperor of Crime made his palace here. Many important people also came from this planet. Perhaps it is not as barren as Luke Skywalker once thought. Perhaps there are mysteries to uncover.
