Dear Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita,

I have witnessed numerous societal movements, yet I continue to wonder: when will I be able to enjoy peace of mind simply for being a human being? When will the cycle of hate come to an end? We are all equal, brothers and sisters in humanity, and should not be subjected to categorization.

Here are key historical moments and movements that are sometimes overlooked or marginalized, but remain crucial in understanding and addressing societal issues:

- Civil Rights Movement (1950s-1960s):

- Brown v. Board of Education (1954): Supreme Court decision declaring segregation in public schools unconstitutional.

- Montgomery Bus Boycott (1955-1956)

Boycott led by Martin Luther King: Jr. in response to Rosa Parks' arrest for refusing to give up her bus seat.

- Civil Rights Act of 1964:Legislation outlawing discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin.

- Women's Movement (1960s-present):

- The Feminine Mystique (1963): Betty Friedan's book challenging traditional gender roles and advocating for women's equality.

- Title IX (1972): Federal law prohibiting sex discrimination in education programs and activities.

- Roe v. Wade (1973): Supreme Court decision legalizing abortion nationwide.

- LGBTQ+ Rights Movement (mid-20th century-present):

- Stonewall Riots (1969): Sparked modern LGBTQ+ activism following police raid on the Stonewall Inn in New York City.

- Don't Ask, Don't Tell (1993): U.S. military policy prohibiting openly gay, lesbian, or bisexual individuals from serving.

- Obergefell v. Hodges (2015): Supreme Court decision legalizing same-sex marriage across the United States.

These moments represent pivotal struggles and achievements in advancing civil rights, gender equality, and LGBTQ+ rights in American society. They continue to shape our understanding of justice, equality, and the ongoing fight against discrimination.

It is imperative that we learn to live together harmoniously, embracing love and mutual respect while honoring each other's individuality. In sectors such as entertainment, individuals who defy traditional norms have found acceptance based on their talents and contributions. It would be unjust to deny them this recognition.

The 1619 Project, championed by Nicole Hannah-Jones, seeks to spotlight the Black experience in America, highlighting the enduring legacy of slavery and the profound contributions of Black Americans. However, since the GOP under Donald Trump, there has been a concerted effort to undermine initiatives like the 1619 Project, alongside broader moves against addressing issues of race and identity.

This opposition underscores a troubling regression in our efforts to understand and reconcile with our nation's history. We need leadership that supports initiatives such as the 1619 Project, which courageously confronts uncomfortable truths about our past to forge a more inclusive and equitable future.

Moreover, I am deeply concerned about the implications of the Privacy Bill and Age Verification Bill currently under consideration. While I recognize the importance of protecting minors and ensuring responsible adult engagement, these bills must safeguard fundamental rights such as freedom of speech and privacy. It is crucial that any legislative measures strike a balance between protecting vulnerable individuals and preserving civil liberties.

I urge you, as the Attorney General, to champion legislation that respects these principles. We must uphold the rights of all individuals, regardless of their background or beliefs, to express themselves freely and privately. Let us strive for a society where diversity is celebrated and everyone can thrive without fear of discrimination or undue intrusion.

Sincerely,

Denelsia Walker
