Michelle Gomez Hints That Missy Could Be Returning to 'Doctor Who'
'I loved playing this character so much.'
Series 10 of Doctor Who was one heck of a rollercoaster for not only the cast, but for the viewers at home too. The latest series of the hit BBC sci-fi show saw the final adventures with Peter Capaldi as the Twelfth Doctor. Capaldi made his first proper debut as the Doctor in 2014 when Series 8 broadcast on BBC One. The eighth series didn't just see a new Doctor, it saw a new Master too. Michelle Gomez took on the role of Missy (The Master) in 2014 and has been cropping up here and there for three series now.
When Capaldi announced he was stepping down from the iconic role, it wasn't long until Gomez followed in his footsteps and decided she wanted to move on from Doctor Who and start new adventures. Missy was (supposedly) killed off in the Series 10 finale by her past self (John Simm) using a Laser Screwdriver. When the Master revealed he used the "full blast" on Missy, she would be unable to regenerate and was abandoned on the Colony Ship full of Cybermen.
However, Gomez has ever so slightly teased at returning to Doctor Who very soon. Speaking about Missy in the latest issue of the Doctor Who Magazine, Gomez said:
"I think it's going to be really hard to shake this one off. Missy has made quite a big impression on me, and hopefully on the fans as well. She was such a great fit. Even though, for now, she has been laid to rest. I don't think she's ever going to be that far away. I loved playing this character so much, and it was really hard to see her go."
That may seem all doom and gloom, but Gomez went onto explaining that Missy will be back in the future. Continuing her interview Gomez said:
"But I think that in many different shapes and forms, she will be back. I can't really say much more than that. I have never had this response to anything else that I've done, and I'm really grateful for that."
Whether that's a hint at returning back to the main show or a (maybe) a spin-off show, we'll never know. On the other hand, Gomez was questioned whether she would be up for returning as the "misbehaving" Missy with Big Finish Productions and have a whole new set of audio adventures. Speaking about potentially returning with Big Finish, Gomez explained:
"That would be amazing. One of the first 'Doctor Who' things I did was a Big Finish. I think it was called Valhalla with Sylvester McCoy. That was a long time ago, but I love doing audio work."
With the Thirteenth Doctor being played by Jodie Whittaker, the show's first ever female Doctor, we've all had that exact same question — What would Missy be like alongside the Thirteenth Doctor? When questioned what she thought about new show-runner, Chris Chibnall, casting the new Doctor as woman, Gomez had the perfect response. She said:
"Oh my god, it's brilliant. It's so exciting. That girl is an amazing actress and is going to bring so much energy and spark. She's a wonderful choice. I very much look forward to seeing her."
Missy and the Thirteenth Doctor would bring a very interesting type of chemistry to Doctor Who, and it would most certainly be humorous to watch Missy face the fact that the Doctor is now a woman. In the meantime, fans have to sit tight and wait for Series 11 as it's a long way off yet. The rumours currently state that Series 11 will begin broadcasting in October. But, with the new logo recently revealed, there's definitely lots more to come over the coming months.
