Loki is a popular God nowadays thanks to Tom Hiddleston and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but even before Marvel, Loki was a popular god but not as much loved.

Mostly seen as the god of chaos, he wasn't a God but was a giant. In the Prose Edda, he causes a lot of mess, but he also always tells the truth. He was a shapeshifter who disguised himself and played tricks and pranks on the Aesir. He did often right his wrong, at least till the end. Loki is always seen as a trouble maker and nuisance, but he became pretty evil, causing the destruction and end of the entire 9 worlds.

Loki was half frost giant, or jötunn, his father's name is Fárbauti, and his mother's name meant "cruel striker." He had 2 brothers named Helblindi and Býleistr, who were jötunn. Loki married the goddess Sigyn, and they had a son named Nari or Narfi.

Sigyn believed to be a goddess of victory, her name means victorious girl-friend, but not much is known about her other than being Loki's second wife. She was a loyal wife to him. When he was punished for killing Baldr, the gods used their son's entrails as chains to bind him in a cave far below the surface, then they placed a snake above his head, and its venom would drip on his head. Sigyn sat by him with a bowl catching the drops of venom. When she would leave to empty the bowl, the venom would drop on his head, causing pain.

Loki had a few children, all of which are pretty colorful. With Sigyn, he had Nari or Narfi. With his mistress, Angrboda, a frost giant or jötunn, Loki had Fenrir, the giant wolf, Jormungand, a serpent, and Hel, who is half dead and half alive. Loki has another child, but he isn't the child's father. He is the child's mother. He turned himself into a mare and was impregnated but the stallion Svaðilfari and gave birth to Sleipnir, the 8 legged horse.

Loki shows up pretty often in Norse mythology, always causing problems and often fixing those problems himself. In one story, he cut the beautiful golden hair of thors wife, Sif. Thor was understandably mad and demanded he fixes it, so Loki went to the dwarves and asked them to make her beautiful golden hair that would grow on her head. He got her even more stunning hair and weapons to gift the gods, Mjolnir for thor, Gungnir for Odin, Draupnir, and many other weapons.

Loki and his children play a big part in Ragnarok; his killing Baldr is the very beginning. Hel refuses to release Baldr's soul from Helheim. During Ragnarok, Loki's sides with the giants. He and Heimdall mortally wound each other, Jormungand slays Thor, and Fenrir bites the hands-off Tyr and kills Odin.

Loki is a more mysterious character in the Edda than I can describe. He causes so much pain for the Aesir, but he also does so much good right up until the murders Baldr. he does these tricky and bad things, causes so much chaos, then fixes it and gives gifts. Throughout Norse mythology, Loki wasn't for or against the gods. He wasn't evil or right, but in the end, he sided against the gods and fought with the giants, who are, in reality, his people, seeing as he isn't an aesir but is a Jotunn.

Norse mythology is fascinating. The gods are tough, the goddesses are fierce, and they are not immortal. In Norse mythology, giants, elves, dwarves, and many different creatures exist. Nine worlds exist on the massive tree of life Yggdrasil. The worlds are Asgard, Midgard (earth), Helheim, Vanaheim, Niflheim, Nioavellir/ Svartalfaheimr, Jotunheimr, Muspelheim, and Alfheim.
