Jon Favreau Compares 'The Mandalorian' To 'Game of Thrones'

The Mandalorian season 2 has been reported to include some characters who are already familiar to Star Wars fans. Given that Lucasfilm has not confirmed the rumors, take this with a grain of salt. Arguably, the biggest are the possible additions of Boba Fett and Ahsoka Tano, the two characters that had been two of the popular characters from old and new Star Wars stories for years. Especially Boba Fett, who made his first appearance in the 1978 Star Wars Holiday Special. As these are just rumors for now, we will have to wait and see in The Mandalorian season 2, which premieres October 30.

It seems that season 2 may explore storylines not closely related to Mando or The Child, while the first season was well largely grounded with its small scale. Fans were captivated with Mando and his new adoptee, The Child, whom fans have dubbed "Baby Yoda." Despite that, it may still be exciting for Star Wars fans to see the show expand a bit beyond what we have seen as we have followed these two characters. We could be exploring other characters who add to a more large scale story. Showrunner Jon Favreau told Entertainment Weekly the following:

“The new season is about introducing a larger story in the world. The stories become less isolated, yet each episode has its own flavor, and hopefully we’re bringing a lot more scope to the show.”

More on the discussion from The Mandalorian executive producer Dave Filoni, who added the following:

“Everything gets bigger, the stakes get higher, but also the personal story between the Child and The Mandalorian develops in a way I think people will enjoy.”

Favreau also added:

“As we introduce other characters, there are opportunities to follow different storylines,” Favreau says. “The world was really captivated by Game of Thrones and how that evolved as the characters followed different storylines — that's very appealing to me as an audience member.”

Imagine seeing a lot of newer and familiar characters taking part in the overall storyline of The Mandalorian. It could be mind-blowing. Not just that, but we could also potentially see them get their own spin-offs or storylines separate from Din Djarin and The Child. Imagine how big the stories would be if different shows intersect. The most popular (or obvious) storyline is that of Moff Gideon wielding the Darksaber, which had been previously seen in possession of Bo-Katan Kryze, which was given to her by Sabine Wren on Star Wars Rebels. This also makes another possibility that Ahsoka Tano, Sabine Wren, and Bo-Katan could have their own spin-off storylines separate from Din Djarin and The Child.

It sounds like The Mandalorian storytelling may shift at times from Mando and The Child even though the first season focused strictly on them, meaning The Mandalorian season 2 would have a bigger budget than the first season, which was estimated at $100 Million dollar. The Mandalorian season 2 will still be having eight episodes like the first season, despite the bigger storyline. “There’s probably even variation in episode lengths this year,” Jon Favreau said, thus indicating that we could see episodes that are even longer than what we are used to seeing. Then again, some episodes could be shorter than what we are used to, so we will just have to see what ends up happening.

To see the old and new characters merge in this new live-action would be a dream come true and expand the universe in a way. We will just have to hope that the Force is stronger with this next season. The Mandalorian season 2 premieres on October 30 on Disney+.
