Is There An 'Obi-Wan Kenobi' Trailer On The Way?

We Did The Math For You

It will not be long until the season finale of The Book of Boba Fett debuts on Disney+ on February 9th. Wow, we are already into the second month of the year. But what will be coming next? That is the question. No debut dates have been announced for any of the upcoming Star Wars series this year. Currently, all we know is that Obi-Wan Kenobi, Andor, The Mandalorian Season 3, and The Bad Batch Season 2 will come to Disney+ at some point during the year.

Now, the final chapter of The Book of Boba Fett will debut on February 9th, which is a Wednesday. This year's May 4th (aka. Star Wars Day) is on a Wednesday, twelve weeks later. This gives enough time to promote the next Star Wars series. And I would say there is a decent chance it could be the Obi-Wan Kenobi series. Allow me to elaborate and break down a few things here.

There is no denying that out of all the Star Wars content we are getting this year, Obi-Wan Kenobi stands above the rest. (Sorry, poor attempt at a “high ground” joke) Out of all shows we are getting, this one HAS the most hype behind it. Here is a chart from a poll I did back near the end of last year before the debut of The Book of Boba Fett:

Ever since the announcement of anthology movies, Kenobi has been the most suggested by fans. Yes, it was a bit disappointing when they said they were not doing an Obi-Wan standalone film, but we could not have a much better alternative than a series. A Star Wars film is, what, between two, two and a half hours. We are getting nearly triple that in a series. That is MORE Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan, which is something that fans are excited about.

Recently, one of the actors from Obi-Wan Kenobi, Rory Ross, who also stars in The Book of Boba Fett as a Tusken Raider, spoke to SlashFilm about his excitement for the upcoming series. This time he will be portraying an Imperial stormtrooper in Obi-Wan Kenobi. Don't worry, he did not spoil anything.

"It's going to be awesome. It's going to be really, really cool. Having the connective tissue between the prequels and 'A New Hope,' and just understanding where Obi has been and what's happening, story-wise, I think fans are going to enjoy that. It's just going to be a really great time. I think a lot of fans are like, 'Where's the trailer? What's happening?' I think the big part of it is [Lucasfilm] is just trying to make sure that it's as polished as possible, so that when it comes out, it's not going to have that 'Game of Thrones' moment, where there's a coffee cup in the corner that they missed or something like that. It's going to have a lot of love that's poured into it, and it's just going to hopefully blow people's minds and just really enjoy seeing what's been going on."

He is right, of course. That is a question fans have been asking for a while now. Where is the trailer? When is it going to drop? The series is in post-production. Filming has long been finished. So how much longer do we have to wait? It is a tease, and Ross is acknowledging our excitement and our questions. He is breaking the fourth wall in a way. He knows. They [Lucasfilm] know. It is all about timing. And why drop it then?

As I said before. There are twelve weeks between the finale of The Book of Boba Fett and May 4th. During this time, which in the reprint of Legends novel Kenobi is coming out on April 5th along with Darth Plagueis and Darth Bane: Dynasty of Evil. This is fitting as a month later in May, Obi-Wan is getting two new canon books: The Legend of Obi-Wan Kenobi (May 3rd) and then Brotherhood (May 10th). These books will be about both Obi-Wan and Anakin during the Clone Wars. From the novel's description, this sounds early into the Clone Wars.

It makes sense to release Obi-Wan-related media around the time of the series premiere. The month before, you reintroduce the Legends Kenobi novel, which is a very highly prized novel in the fandom. It also makes sense that Obi-Wan Kenobi would be the next live-action Star Wars series to come to Disney+. Especially with May 4th, you want to maximize Star Wars Day by kicking it off with something big. Why not kick it off with the most anticipated series for this year!

Now keep in mind what I said earlier about February 9th and May 4th. That is 84 days (84 divided by 7 is 12) or 12 weeks. Looking at past series:

  • The Mandalorian Season 1: Trailer August 24th, 2019. Premiered November 12th, 2019
  • The Mandalorian Season 2: Trailer September 15th, 2020. Premiered October 30th, 2020
  • The Book of Boba Fett: Trailer November 1st, 2021. Premiered December 29th, 2021

So that is 80 days between The Mandalorian Season 1 trailer and its premiere, 45 days between The Mandalorian Season 2 trailer and its premiere, and 58 days between Book of Boba Fett trailer and its premiere. So now we have a timeframe for Obi-Wan Kenobi coming out anywhere between 6 (and a half) weeks and 12 weeks after the trailer.

Again, this is just me doing guesswork, looking at the information available, and working with what we have. I would say there is a good chance we will be seeing that trailer after the finale of The Book of Boba Fett within that timeframe.
