Is Cobb Vanth Going to Be The New Ruler Of Mos Espa?

There's A New Sheriff In Town

There may have been a massive hint as to the future of Mos Espa in the final scenes of The Book of Boba Fett missed by many.

As pointed out by user @ComCodyCC2224 on Twitter, Boba Fett's final musings on how suited he and Fennec Shand are to rule the city they just spent the entire season trying to save almost seem out of place, save for the fact that the post-credits scene immediately jumps to a recovering Cobb Vanth in Boba's bacta tank, with the mod artist (who has yet to be named) standing over him, ready to get to work. Some fans think these final scenes imply that Fett is planning to hand over the keys to the city to Vanth.

It's essential to start by noting that in many of the commonplace scenes in which we saw Fett in the bacta tank, it was before or after scenes that either mentioned his rule, showcased his ability as a leader, or showed flashbacks in which we saw the events that lead him to take on this mantle. Additionally, the only other time we saw Fett reach out to the mod artist to save someone's life, it was Fennec, who we now know becomes Fett's second in command.

Both the bacta tank and the mod artist appearing in the post-credits scene with Vanth, alongside Fett discussing moving on from Mos Espa, suggest that Fett will be mentoring Vanth in the same way he did Fennec, to take on the mantle of ruler of Mos Espa.

This shouldn't come as a surprise to audiences, whose biggest gripe with the finale was that it tied up loose ends too well and didn't seem to leave an opening for future conflict. The best explanation for this is, then, that Fett will not be dealing with those future issues but that another character, like Vanth, will.

As fans of both The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett know, Cobb Vanth has already proven himself to be a capable leader, and as Marshall of Freetown, he has not only protected his people from creatures and drug lords alike but also grown the town from a backwater village where fear kept them from thriving, into a fledgling city with capable fighters. The name they chose for themselves, Freetown, also shows they have grown from just another Tatooine village on the outskirts of the main cities (as well as the pain plotline) into a town of proud and loyal families, and workers fought for their freedom with the help of Vanth.

It doesn't seem out of nowhere that Fett and Vanth have many similarities since when we first meet Cobb Vanth, he is actually donning Boba Fett's armor. This may just be the first clue that Vanth will take up Fett's mantle again, though this time without the armor.

Fett and Vanth both have personal ties to the Tuskens as well. Boba, with his history of going from captive in a Tusken camp to a warrior of the tribe, and Cobb going from adversary to the Tuskens to working with them to take down a common enemy. They both view Tatooine as their home and take a keen interest in protecting their respective peoples from outside threats. The loyalty the people of Freetown have to Cobb Vanth, even after losing his armor, is echoed in the dedication the mod squad gain for Fett throughout the season.

Boba Fett is the first crime lord we've seen who values the people above profit, and Cobb Vanth felt the same way about his people, which is why he was singlehandedly taking on the spice trade surrounding his town. This already set them up to be good allies. Both Fett and Vanth have refused to let greed or power overtake their moral standing, and out of anyone on Tatooine, Fett should trust Vanth to take over for him if he chooses to, possibly with Fennec Shand staying on with Vanth as his advisor as she did for Fett.
