Inside Look: Check Out The New Saber From 'Star Wars: The High Republic'

Star Wars fans have a lot to look forward to right now, with season 2 of The Mandalorian right around the corner, and more news about upcoming shows, merchandise, and more coming out every day.
While this year has certainly been a doozy in a lot of ways, Star Wars plans to kick off 2021 in a positive way, as they will be launching their new era, The High Republic, in January.
The High Republic will encapsulate "original stories spanning a variety of books, comics, and beyond." Perhaps they could tie into future films as well. The short description reads:
"In the all-new era of the glorious HIGH REPUBLIC, the noble and wise Jedi Knights must face a frightening threat to themselves, the galaxy, and to the Force itself..."
Star Wars has already released titles for some of the upcoming novels, including Light of the Jedi by Charles Soule, A Test of Courage by Justina Ireland, and Into the Dark by Claudia Gray, all releasing within the first few months of 2021. They also revealed a sneak preview of Marvel's Star Wars: The High Republic #1, in which writer Cavan Scott says "you'll see things never before seen in a Star Wars story."
While not too much is known about The High Republic, we know that it is set roughly 200 years before the events of The Phantom Menace, and hints toward "a more opulent era" for the Jedi.
Recently, Star Wars announced that we will get an exciting sneak peak of what is to come in Star Wars: The Lightsaber Collection, which will reveal an up-close look at the lightsaber belonging to Stellan Gios, a Jedi Master from the High Republic era.
Star Wars: The Lightsaber Collection is a new book that is pretty much just what it sounds like! The Simon and Schuster website describes it as follows:
"...a comprehensive visual guide exploring the iconic and legendary lightsabers found within the Star Wars galaxy, featuring fan-favorite hilts from the Skywalker saga, Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Star Wars Rebels, comics, novels, and video games."
And while much of it will clearly be a dose of nostalgia as we get closer looks at sabers dating all the way back to the original trilogy, it is exciting that we will get to see some new sabers as well, like Stellan Gios'.
Michael Siglain, Lucasfilm Publishing's creative director, spoke to StarWars.com about the design process for the saber and the approach that the creative team took when designing weapons for the High Republic era.
"We wanted to make the Jedi distinctive and instantly recognizable as Jedi Knights of the High Republic, and that apples not only to their clothing but to their lightsabers, as well. Internally, we often refer to the Jedi of this era as 'the Jedi Knights of the Round Table.' Taking that idea one step further, their sabers can be viewed as their own versions of Excalibur."
Fans will, of course, recognize the cross-guard design as something pretty similar to Kylo Ren's lightsaber from the sequel trilogy, but illustration manager Jeff R. Thomas was insistent about the fact that they had to design something more traditional.
"With the High Republic, we wanted to implement a more traditional crossguard, but I still wanted to include the saber-blade into the crossguard design, so that Stellan would be able to defend himself against saber attacks. That's where Excalibur came into play. What would a lightsaber version of Excalibur look like?"
The design he came up with features a crossguard that activates when the saber is turned on, as shown in the concept art above, which gives the saber a "slimmer silhouette while holstered" that lends itself "to some great visuals when activating."
In order to learn more about Stellan Gios, his saber, and a host of other lightsabers featured throughout the Star Wars universe, take a look at Star Wars: The Lightsaber Collection, which is available for pre-order now and will release on October 20th.
We cannot wait to learn more about the High Republic in the coming months, and especially for the series to launch in January!

The Question An oft asked question relates to how humans and every other species on the planet will or will not adapt to the new environmental conditions that climate change will quite probably (and arguably already has) impose across much of the globe. For other species the answer is fairly obvious, they will either adapt or they will perish. As has been the case throughout all of earth’s history, evolution through natural selection requires that those with the traits that are best adapted to reproduce will do so and so pass them on, especially when pressed by changes in the environment. Many argue that the changes we are seeing or will soon see as a result of climate change are occurring too rapidly for many species to adapt. In essence that evolution cannot keep up with the pace of change. Mutations simply cannot occur frequently enough to supply a wide enough variety of phenotypes of different varieties to allow for at least one that can survive the new conditions any given species may find itself in. Rapid changes are the hardest for the longest lived (excluding microorganisms), and slowest reproducing creatures to deal with, and they face the greatest threat of massive population decrease or even extinction. I happen to think that adaptation can happen much faster than is typically believed, but am not naïve enough to think that even a greatly accelerated adaptation or mutation process will be enough to save all or even most animal species from the threat of habitat loss or change brought about by global warming.
