Does Moff Gideon Have The Same Power That Darth Vader Had?

He Could Be A Huge Threat

In the final episodes of The Mandalorian season one, we were introduced to an officer in the Imperial Security Bureau, a law enforcement and intelligence agency of the Galactic Empire. This was Moff Gideon, who had also acquired the legendary Mandalorian weapon known as the Darksaber. He has been leading a remnant of the Empire. Since The Mandalorian takes place five years after the death of Darth Vader and the defeat of Emperor Palpatine in Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi, Moff Gideon could be the next big bad wolf striking fear in the galaxy at this point in the timeline. According to actor Giancarlo Esposito, who portrayed the villain Moff Gideon, it is possible that the character sees himself as such in the grand scheme of things.

Moff Gideon was an officer in the Imperial Security Bureau of the Galactic Empire who took part in the Great Purge of the Mandalorians. After the great fall of the Mandalorians, Moff Gideon came into possession of the Darksaber, the legendary weapon of House Vizla that had previously been wielded by Lady Bo-Katan Kryze as the leader of the Mandalorians. Lady Bo-Katan Kryze hunted Moff Gideon in hope of regaining the symbol of the Mandalorians.

In a conversation with IGN, the actor himself explained why Moff Gideon dressed up less like Peter Cushing’s Grand Moff Tarkin from Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope, leaning more toward the style of Darth Vader:

“I like to think or imagine in my brain, that he has the kind of power that Darth Vader had. And so, seeing him in his armor and his cape and armed up tells me he’s a warrior. That tells me he is a soldier and has the skills to back that up.”

Of course, this is something that remains to be seen in the future. Nothing set in stone, but with Moff Gideon’s warrior skills that put him on par with Darth Vader, new angles could be possible. Giancarlo Esposito has also hinted to Entertainment Weekly on an interview by asking the rhetorical question, “What does he really want?” He goes on:

“Does he want to empower other people or take all the power for himself? Or does he want to rebuild the galaxy or create the world’s most formidable army?”

It seems like this ambition of Moff Gideon will somehow reverberate throughout the entire The Mandalorian season two series. Possibly the upcoming The Mandalorian season 3.

The cool thing is we probably do not have to wait too long to see Moff Gideon show off his skills. Soon, we should be seeing him with his famous weapon, the Darksaber. This could explain the reason why he is after The Child. Could he be after The Child's Force abilities? Something that tells us that it is possible. Giancarlo Esposito described Moff Gideon as “a thinker” who “already knows things that he is going to do that you might think as an audience are impossible, but he already is prepared for certain outcomes.”

Whatever comes next for Moff Gideon on the series, we will just have to sit and wait for the next episodes to air. We are hoping that Moff Gideon will show off his warrior skills with his Darksaber as Giancarlo Esposito seems to have hinted. This is going to be interesting if Moff Gideon is lot more powerful than Darth Vader. The galaxy is in a big thread. We’ll just have to find out on new episodes of The Mandalorian season two on Disney+ every Friday.
