Doctor Who has been off our screens for a year, but today, the hit BBC series made an epic return. Jodie Whittaker returned as the Thirteenth Doctor, rocked a tux and faced an old foe in the Series 12 premiere.

Accompanied by current companions, Graham (Bradley Walsh), Yaz (Mandip Gill) and Ryan (Tosin Cole), the spy-thriller series opener proved to be, not a step up, but a massive leap up from Series 11. Whittaker’s first series as the Doctor consisted of ten standalone episodes, however, this year that has been ditched.

Starring special guests, Stephen Fry and Sir Lenny Henry, the James Bond inspired story was full of suspense, laughs, and an epic score. Not to mention that big shock at the end. Wait, no, not shock. Twist! The Master. Is. Back.

Chibnall has upped the bar with this Master reveal. Agent O was, at first, just an innocent spy, until his machinery and technology in his house started coming to light. It wasn’t until the TARDIS team and O were on a plane – with no pilot – that O revealed his identity.

“Bit Wicked Witch of the West, but you get the gist. Maybe. Maybe not. Oh, come on, Doctor, catch up. You can do it. That’s…that’s my name, and that’s why I chose it. So satisfying. Doctor, I did say look for the spymaster. Or should I spy…Master?”

The big shock sent fans into meltdown before the Master went onto saying he [The Master] is her “best enemy” and that him and the Doctor “go way, way, way back”, which we know they do. One Twitter user said they thought Spyfall was “phenomenal”, it felt “fresh and different” with a “masterful” twist of a cliffhanger.

Another user said the cliffhanger was a “terrific twist” that he “didn’t see coming until just a few seconds before”.

The Master was last seen in 2017 in Peter Capaldi’s Series 10 finale. Both Missy (Michelle Gomez) and John Simm’s Master went head-to-head before killing one another. However, John Simm’s return was spoiled by the press and was included in the trailer at the end.

Keeping Sacha Dhawan free from trailers and press photos has proven a massive success for current showrunner, Chris Chibnall, as he has well and truly wowed Doctor Who fans. But what's next for the Doctor?

From watching "Spyfall: Part One", we know the Master’s plan has involved recruiting alien, who will rewrite the DNA of many spies, he hid away as a spy for MI6 for many years, spending time with the Doctor and her fam before kidnapping the Doctor, leaving Graham, Ryan and Yaz left for dead on a crashing plane.

The next guess is the Master is working with Daniel Barton (Sir Lenny Henry), who is only 93% human. Is her part Time Lord, or is there another twist in the box to come? It is currently unclear what these creatures actually look like. All we’ve seen are bright, white silhouettes taking people, ready to rewrite their DNA. The biggest question is: what the Master is actually up to? All will be told on 5th January. The synopsis for episode two reads:

“A terrifying plan to destroy humanity is about to reach fruition. Can the Doctor and her friends escape multiple traps and defeat a deadly alliance?”

Putting everything aside, the Doctor Who team dedicated the Series 12 opening episode to the “masterful” Terrance Dicks – the script editor and author for Doctor Who – who died earlier this year. Dicks is well-known for many Doctor Who items, but did you know he co-created and named the Master during the Classic era?

Doctor Who continues on BBC One and BBC America every Sunday.
