Did You See-3PO The Star Wars Easter Egg In 'Westworld'?
Set your guns to "stunned," as you are about to be bowled over when the worlds of Westworld and Star Wars combine.
Set your guns to "stunned," as you are about to be bowled over when the worlds of Westworld and Star Wars combine. "What?" you cry. Is Dr. Ford creating a robotic Death Star, has Dolores Wood starting wearing her hair in buns, or is Bernard Lowe also really a wookiee? In a universe populated by robots, it was only a matter of time before someone drew comparisons with that galaxy far, far away.
Warning: Spoilers for Westworld Episode 9.
George R.R. Martin has already staked his claim on a #GameofThrones/Westworld crossover, but Episode 9, "The Well-Tempered Clavier," seemingly dropped into another well known universe courtesy of George Lucas's #StarWars. Did you spot a rather familiar looking human-cyborg relations robot, looking like he had seen better days? We have all heard the theory that #Westworld could be set on Mars, so moving to Skywalker territory doesn't seem beyond the realm of possibility.
Now you 'C' me.
The office of nefarious Dr. Robert Ford is a treasure trove of Westworld goodies — from random scrawlings, to olde worlde piano players, and early drafts of Dolores. I am also pretty sure there is a subtle appearance of C-3PO in and among his many nick-nacks. If you look to the bottom right corner of his desk there is some long abandoned version of what we guess could have been an idea for a host. However, it could actually be a prototype for a future sci-fi host, which bears more than a striking resemblance to C-3PO, the longstanding British bot who has appeared in all seven Star Wars films.
Here is a closer look:
Golden Oldie
If you still aren't convinced, thinking "but C-3PO is all shiny and gold," he hasn't always been. You may remember that an incomplete version of the polite android was first seen in Episode I: The Phantom Menace, before returning in slightly better shape for Episode II: Attack of the Clones. It wasn't until the third prequel film that C-3PO got his signature 24k pimpage.
In fact, Marvel's Darth Vader-centric comic line featured an evil version of C-3PO and R2-D2, called 0-0-0 (Triple Zero). Given all the glitching and goings on down in the park (including Dolores's murder of Arnold), having an evil C-3PO wouldn't be the weirdest thing to happen on Westworld. Also, with J.J. Abrams serving as an executive producer on Westworld, and being director of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, this could be a nod to his previous work.
The Futureworld's Bright
Episode 6 of Westworld already gave us a glimmer of Yul Brynner's Gunslinger from the Westworld feature film in 1973, and although Jonathan Nolan claimed it was just an Easter Egg, some hold out for it linking to a larger universe. So, how would a futuristic robot head fit into life outside the park?
1976's maligned sequel Futureworld found the cast aboard a phony orbiting space station. If we do move beyond the confines of dusty deserts, there could be plenty more "futuristic" robots knocking around the park. We can but hope for a robotic Darth Vader lurking in the bowels of the Mesa Hub, but that is a young fanboy's dream.
