Is 'Star Wars' Becoming Too Reliant On Cameos?
Warning: Spoilers for Chapter 6: From The Desert Comes A Stranger It is starting to look like everybody knows everybody in Star Wars. Over the last few years, we have seen the franchise bring back many of its most iconic characters in current movies, shows, comics, novels, and video games. From original trilogy staples like Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader to prequel mainstays like Yoda and Darth Maul. Of course, this makes sense in many respects. If you have gotten some of the most recognizable characters in pop culture, you might as well use them, right? But the question I want to talk about today is whether or not Star Wars has become too reliant on resurrecting these characters rather than focusing on new ones.

Jennifer Beals was a pleasant surprise and welcome addition to the Star Wars universe. In The Book of Boba Fett, she plays a Twi’lek named Garsa Fwip. Fwip owns and operates a cantina called The Sanctuary in Mos Espa, and unlike some other businesses in Mos Espa, she runs her business with dignity and respect. However, The Sanctuary wasn’t the only place treating its employees and patrons well. Jennifer Beals revealed that the set of The Book of Boba Fett was the “gold standard” in terms of set environment, and she said that Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni helped to create an incredibly “safe and joyful” set for everyone.

The Star Wars universe is a vast and expansive galaxy. It is also a place where a lot of the characters tend to run into each other when having their own adventures. As Lucasfilm continues to expand this universe, it also wants to connect it. As the series and film side of things continues to expand, it will have to deal with more characters and more cameos. But what defines a cameo? When is something truly a cameo in Star Wars? When is something just a cameo for a cameo's sake and when is it something far more?

The Star Wars gaming community is still reeling from the release of the Star Wars Eclipse cinematic reveal trailer. A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one, as the stage is set for (hopefully) a renaissance of Star Wars video games. As new developers and studios take up the heavy Star Wars mantle, fans wait in anticipation to see what will be coming to their consoles. Eclipse caught fan attention with an impressive trailer, but still little is known about the actual gameplay, story, or setting of Eclipse, short of it being set in the High Republic and being developed by Quantic Dream.

The Book of Boba Fett “Chapter 6: From the Desert Comes a Stranger” brings back one of Star Wars’ most fascinating characters: Cad Bane. This is the first time that Star Wars fans see Cad Bane in live-action, having previously just seen him in The Clone Wars and The Bad Batch animated series. In The Book of Boba Fett, Cad Bane is voiced by Corey Burton, the original voice actor, but portrayed by a stuntman. Cad Bane’s appearance in The Book of Boba Fett raises some questions about what his relationship with Boba Fett and Fennec Shand is going to be and answers some questions about his character still being alive after the Empire has fallen. It also raises some questions about what else may be in store for this character either live-action or animated.

Lucasfilm usually does not take lightly when one of its employees or contractors behaves inappropriately or says something out of line. Recent examples like Colin Trevorrow, Christopher Miller, Phil Lord, and author Chuck Wendig among others could testify. However, cutting ties with one of its stars or even penalizing them is not something that has started only after Disney’s acquisition of Lucasfilm in 2012.

Coruscant is an ecumenopolis planet (where the cities have merged into one city across the whole planet) located in the Core Worlds quadrant region of the Star Wars universe. The first mention of Coruscant was in 1991 in the Timothy Zahn novel Heir To The Empire, but it didn’t make its screen debut until 1997 when it appeared at the end of the Return Of The Jedi special edition.

As we approach the end of The Book of Boba Fett fans are scouring the internet for every last piece of Boba Fett to try and see where the series may be working towards in the finale. This has led to the internet unearthing a lost scene from an unfinished storyline from The Clone Wars in 2014 before it was cancelled and resurrected on Netflix would have shown Cad Bane taking the son of his friend and fellow bounty hunter Jango Fett under his wing which would have led to a stand-off between fans’ two favourites Cad Bane and Boba Fett.

Finally, we Star Wars fans can enjoy some new Star Wars content. I know last year we got The Bad Batch and Star Wars: Visions along with several comics and books. But show-wise, we were left a bit starved, compared to Marvel. Now we are two-thirds of the way into The Book of Boba Fett, and later this year we will hopefully be enjoying the likes of Andor, The Bad Batch Season 2, The Mandalorian Season 3, and of course, the long-awaited Obi-Wan Kenobi. 2022 is looking to be a great year for Star Wars fans.

Since Disney purchased Star Wars in 2012, they have pumped out a lot of media related to the IP. Five movies and several streaming series have been released, with even more on the way, such as the upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi show. The latest one to debut has been The Book of Boba Fett, a show, fittingly enough, that centers around the mysterious bounty hunter of the same name. Based on the reviews so far, the general consensus is that the show itself is on the right side of pretty decent. It's no Mandalorian, but nothing has been so far.
