‘Star Wars: Squadrons’ And ‘LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga’ Gameplay Revealed At Gamescom
A lot of video game announcements have been pushed back after the cancellation of E3 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, meaning that things have been relatively quiet on the announcement front. Lately, it was announced via virtual convention DC FanDome that Gotham Knights and Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League (the latter being a game set in the popular Batman: Arkham universe) will be the upcoming games coming in 2021 and 2022, respectively. Now, gamescom has given us glimpses at the gameplay for upcoming Star Wars games.

Twelve years ago this month, Ahsoka Tano made her debut in the animated film Star Wars: The Clone Wars, which was then followed by the animated series of the same name. Back then, many fans were dismissive of the character, viewing her as a pointless retcon, given that there had been no previous reference to Anakin Skywalker having an apprentice. And some were very cynical about the idea of Star Wars entering the realm of 3D animation, which was (and still is by some) seen as inferior to both live-action and 2D animation.

While Star Wars is still putting out TV show content on Disney+, we have to wait until December 2023 to see the next Star Wars film. It was previously intended for a December 2022 release before being pushed back. Some films have had to be pushed back due to the pandemic, though some have speculated that the delay could simply be due to Lucasfilm trying to figure out what it is that they want to do with the next set of films. There are no concrete details about when this next one will be set or what it is about, but Lucasfilm and much of the fans feel done with the Skywalker saga and are ready to explore the wider galaxy. Speaking with The Wrap recently, Kathleen Kennedy, the president of Lucasfilm, had the following to say about how the company is using the delay to their advantage:

Star Wars: The Clone Wars: Stories of Light and Dark is a new anthology book filled with short stories that are mostly adaptations of episodes from The Clone Wars animated series. Ten of them focus on specific main characters, with the perspectives being either first person or third person limited. The final story, “The Bug,” is the only story that tells of events that are new to the fans. I listened to the audiobook, which included voice actors from the series.

Obi-Wan Kenobi is one of the most beloved characters of Star Wars. From Alec Guinness, to Ewan McGregor, to James Arnold Taylor, to Stephen Stanton, he was been consistently portrayed very well by talented actors, and he has a very compelling story. Naturally, fans have been wanting an Obi-Wan Kenobi spin-off for years. Finally, at last year’s D23 convention, it was announced that there would be an Obi-Wan Kenobi series for Disney+ set eight years after Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith and featuring Ewan McGregor back in the role.

The argument could be made that Star Wars is the most popular, influential film series of all time. Even popular series like The Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter have not come quite as close to the cultural impact that Star Wars has. While Harry Potter changed the teen fiction genre, and there is not a single work of fantasy that does not owe something to Tolkien, in terms of cinema, Star Wars takes the cake.
