Astrology throughout differant cultures

In this article I will discuss a fairly interesting topic and that is how astrology looks in three differant cultures: Western, Chinese and Verdic. Hope you enjoy this article.

Astrology in the western culture

The first culture when interpreting the horoscopes we will look at is a look into the western culture. Astrology is the western culture can be looked at as a form of divination that takes a look into a persons birth. When looking at astrology in western culture its broken down into 12 signs shown below.

♈ Aries (Ram): March 21–April 19

♉ Taurus (Bull): April 20–May 20

♊ Gemini (Twins): May 21–June 21

♋ Cancer (Crab): June 22–July 22

♌ Leo (Lion): July 23–August 22

♍ Virgo (Virgin): August 23–September 22

♎ Libra (Balance): September 23–October 23

♏ Scorpius (Scorpion): October 24–November 21

♐ Sagittarius (Archer): November 22–December 21

♑ Capricornus (Goat): December 22–January 19

♒ Aquarius (Water Bearer): January 20–February 18

♓ Pisces (Fish): February 19–March 20

Astrology in the western culture tends to be centrally focused around the movements of the three main areas; the sun, the moon and the stars. According to western astrology most of the time it is looked at strictly by their sun sign. The sun sign looks at the persons date, time and place of birth. Each person has a specific sign assigned and these signs are : Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto, and Ascendant. The Ascendant is the astrological sign that is ascending on the eastern horizon at a person’s date, time, and location of birth. All of these symbols are said to influence the persons personality. A persons sun sign is said to determine what there ego is like and how they identify themselves. The moon sign shows what they are like alone and in their peak of comfort. The ascedent in western astrology shows how this person presents themselves to other people. Other things that are looked at is your mercury, venus, mars, jupiter, saturn, uranus, neptune and pluto. The sign of mercury shows how they communicate. Venus tends to how they show areas of affection towards others. Mars deals with assertiveness, Jupiter deals with there social triangle, saturn deals with boundaries, responsibilities and self discipline. Uranus looks at going against the grain in ways of rebellion, Neptune deals with dreams and pluto deals with obsession.

Astrology in the Chinese zodiac

When looking at the chinese zodiac it is similar in some ways to the zodiacs in western culture but it is also differant in many ways. They are similar because like that of the western culture there are 12 areas. Like shown above these areas are animals. These animals are dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog, boar, rat, ox and tiger. Unlike the zodiacs in the western culture the chinese culture goes by year rather than month. These animals stand for an essential characteristic, color and flavor that will influence the following year. We are currently in the year of the tiger. This means that this year it will be about making big changes. This year the colors that bring good luck are blue and green. The lucky numbers are 1,3 and 7. The lucky flower is a plum blossom and the lucky direction is north. Along with the chinese zodiac each zodiac recieves an element. The elements wood, fire, earth, metal, and water. Each element have specific qualities. Someone who has the element of wood is seen as being warm, generous, elegant and considerate. People with the fire element are seen being decisive, innovative, dynamic, and joyful. The earth element is seen as honest, responsible and patient. Metal elements are strong, ambitious and independant and water elements are flexible, creative, and Innovative. Also along with the element each person is given yin or yang. These balance the world. The Yin signs are Rooster, Rabbit, Pig, Snake, Ox, and Goat. The Yang signs are Monkey, Tiger, Rat, Horse, Dragon, and Dog.

Verdic Astrology

Another word for verdic astrology is hindu astrology. When looking at the differance between verdic and western astrology the differance is verdic considered the planetary movements. Verdic astrology is seperated into three main areas: Siddhanta,Samhita, and Hora. Siddhanta deals with astronomy and its application with astrology. Samhita deals with what they say is mundane astrology. This deals with predicting events like natural disasters, major political events , financials events and omens. The last is hora which deals with a bunch of sub branches. The first sub branch is Jaatak Shaastra / Hora Shaastra: This deals with predictions based on individual horoscopes. The next sub-branch is Muhurt. This deals with the most accurate time to do and begin an activity. Their than is Swar Shaastra which deals with predictions based on names. Prashna deals with the exact time a question is asked to a person. The last one I will discuss is Kabala which is astrology based on numbers.
