The background is orange with a centered rectangle within. The rectangle itself begins with a light blue from the left and shifts to a purple color. Within the rectangle are the words, 'This list is for the people trying to step away from the big breasted plot holes and get into anime that tells an interesting story with more realistic character models for women. Part 3' The font is all capslocked with purple and dark purple outlines. Part 3 written in light green font. On the bottom left on the edge of the background are three individuals, two girls and one woman. They are all wearing hijab, each a different color. From left to right, light green, purple and tan hijab. The two girls on either side of the woman appear to be explaining what's on the laptop in front of the woman. The two girls are smiling, she looks skeptical. They are visible only from waist up, wearing, from left to right, purple, pink and light blue shirts. On the far bottom right of the background is a woman with pink hair. She is holding the bisexual pride flag with arms outstretched flag at her back. She is wearing a light blue tee with the same flag around the bottom. She is visible only from the waist up but wears blue skirt with light blue belt. Above on the top left is a woman holding a child in her lap. They are reading a red book. They both have dark black hair. The woman is wearing a blue shirt with red pants. Her wheelchair is pink and has blue wheels. Her hair is worn down in long waves while the child has her hair in a braided ponytail. They are all brown or black women.

Hello, all and happy March and Women’s History Month! This article comes a little late so in honor of last month we will be re-featuring our anime that have black leads involved within the storyline and adding fresh shows to the mix. If there are other anime that I have forgotten to add to the list, please feel free to share them on my Facebook page Lady Sophystra. My page features black and femme positive art and merchandise that help feed and support the writer. As always, I hope this list helps you to find more enjoyable shows to watch and avoid the cringe moments of objectification that no one wants. Want more inclusive fashion and decor, check out our artist hand-made designs made here exclusively at sophystra.redbubble.com

What's on this list?

For those of you new to this article welcome to Anime Equals Part Three! This list is a compilation of women positive and overall inclusive anime. This means that there is minimal objectification, strong female leads and a lot of the anime will have passed the Bechdel test. This list also includes other juicy tidbits, such as themes throughout the show, age rating, whether or not the dubbing is any good and also includes information on the music choices throughout the show. This list was made with the intention of giving a little pushback against a lot of the misogynistic and non-inclusive anime out there.

Also please feel free to check out my other articles on women-positive media, also on Vocal. Now dig in and enjoy!

-------

Megalobox, 2018, R (13 episodes) Ongoing

( Viz Media, Megalobox, season 1 on Blu-ray | Official English Trailer | VIZ 2019)

This show is everything you want in an underdog story. A young man working as a fighter in the streets wants a life as a prizefighter in the ring. Being an undocumented immigrant, it seems he has no chance but it seems fate has other plans in store...With a bumping track, heartfelt ensemble cast and old-school mixed with new school animation, this show digs deep and shows guts. Dealing with heavy themes this show does what it can to emphasize the reality of a life in poverty. Easily bingeable, this boxing story has its own surprise spin that I hope everyone enjoys! While there is not a heavy female presence within this show, the one woman that is featured plays an important role.

Themes: Fighting, Revenge, Rivalry, Disabled Characters, Competition, Slice of Life, Torture, General Violence, Black Lead/POC Leads, Alternate Universe, Child Slavery, Friendship, Gangs, PTSD, War, Immigration, Technology, Comedy, Travel, Politics, Child Abuse, Tragedy, Duelling, Modern Times

Music: Hip-hop, Trip-hop, Funk, R&B, Acoustic, Drum n Bass, Drums, Classical

Where Can I Watch? Netflix, Tubi, PlutoTV, Hulu (Premium), Youtube, Vudu

Does Dub Do It Justice? The dub is done extremely well, lending the lead voice parts to POCs, including Mexican-American voice actress Erica Mendez (Kill la Kill, Sailor Moon) and Chinese voice actor Kaiji Tang (Jujutsu Kaisen, Baki). So while the show doesn’t feature women heavily one of the main voice actors throughout is a talented woman of color so support!

Fate/Zero, 2011 R/17+ (25 episodes) Finished

(Viz Media, Official Fate/Zero dub trailer - coming soon to neon alley 2013)

This show is a slow burn but very much worth the watch. Focusing on mages in the modern age, this show is about the observance of an age-old competition; fighting for the Holy Grail. In the competition are a set number of mages each with a Servant, a Hero(ine) of old, present or modern time that fights in service of the mage. Whoever gets the grail gets a wish granted! Full of mythological and historical references, epic battles and tragedy, this anime goes hard in every direction. In-depth storytelling, passes the Bechdel test, intricate family and political ties, so not the type of anime you do something else and watch. People familiar with weapons will love the show simply for its attention to their detail. Warnings on this show, however, there are scenes of implied brutality though not outright assault. Torture and violence do occur in this show in frequency. Some of these mages are cruel.

Themes: Supernatural, Tragedy, Romance, Duelling, Female Lead, Disabled Characters, Mythology, Rivalry, Competition, Historical Fiction, Death, Animal Death, Slice of Life, Torture, Magic, Child Abuse, Fighting, General Violence, Gun Violence, Child Death, Politics, School

Music: Orchestral, Fantasy, Classical

Where Can I Watch? Netflix, Hulu, Crunchyroll, Funimation, Amazon Prime

Does Dub Do It Justice? Yes, it does, and very well in fact. The dubbed version of this is superb, with lively voice acting from all characters. Villains sound absolutely soul-crushing, heroes and heroines are not the usual breathy vocals that are forced on us.

-------

Fate/Stay Night [Unlimited Blade Works], 2006 R/17+ (24 Episodes) Finished

(Aniplex USA, Fate/stay night:Unlimited Blade Works English Dub Trailer 2015)

This show, though the predecessor, details the fallout of the previous competition in Fate Zero. It involves the next mages in the Holy Grail War and their Servants, some of whom were involved in the last battle. Reintroducing old foes and dazzling us with new ones, this storyline has a more high school feel due to the age of the new protagonists. Though this time around the show is touch more lighthearted, it isn’t by much. There is torture, child murder and more dark themes of tragedy. Again, mages are cruel and especially so when competitive. Still includes an intricate storyline, female leads that pass the Bechdel test, intense and complex villains and surprise plots twists and turns. The fight scenes are still an epic scale and done with fluid animation and a soundtrack that emphasizes such.

Themes: Supernatural, Tragedy, Duelling, Female Lead, Disabled Characters, Mythology, Historical Fiction, Death, Magic, Harming of Children, Fighting, Revenge, Rivalry, Competition, Torture, Romance, Slice of Life, School

Music: Orchestral, Fantasy, Classical

Where Can I Watch? Netflix, Hulu, Crunchyroll, Funimation, Amazon Prime

Does Dub Do It Justice? Yes, it does. Using many of the voice actors from the show previous, the same intensity in acting is given in this show. The protagonist is very much playing into the hero trope, however, so if you don’t like hero monologues this show isn’t for you. Other than that, the voice acting is superb with more than several lines that you’ll probably carry with you.

-------

Michiko and Hatchin, 2008 PG-13 (22 episodes) Ongoing

(Fuji TV, Michiko & Hatchin Official Trailer 2014)

This anime features a whole lot of POC and black characters, as well as Afro-Latinx characters that take the lead! Following the lives of escaped convict Michiko and mistreated orphan Hatchin, these two come together during a chance meeting. From there these two form a strange give and take bond while on the run from the cops and other dangerous foes. A fun thrill ride, with POCs taking major part in all of the action. Gorgeously animated and heartfelt, this anime will have you laughing, crying, and on the edge of your seat. If you’re a fan of Cowboy Bebop this show will definitely speak to you. Passes the Bechdel Test with miles to spare! Also, should mention that this show is also female-forward, with a nearly all-female cast and two prominent female leads. There's also a nod to the struggle of sex work and the prostitution industry.

Themes: Criminals, Female Lead, Black/POC Lead, Latinx influence, Modern Times, Slice of Life, Incarceration, On the Run, Nudity, Sex Workers, Underage Drinking, Physical Abuse, Child Trafficking, LGBTQIA character, Child Abuse, Language, Investigative, Comedy, Mystery, Family, Adoption

Music: Vocals, Latin American, Indigenous, Seventies, Hip Hop

Where Can I Watch? Funimation, Crunchyroll, Amazon Prime, Funimation, Youtube

Does Dub Do It Justice? Absolutely. This show has very believable dialogue, down to the cursing mouth of the main protagonist. Not to mention the voice actor that plays Michiko is Latinx which means for once the dubbing matches the actor which goes for a lot of the actors who were cast. Extremely refreshing and shows the work that can be done when people of color are actively hired.

-------

Carmen SanDiego, 2019 PG (24 episodes) Ongoing

(Netflix, Carmen Sandiego | Official Trailer [HD] | Netflix 2019)

This show is a great homage to the original Carmen SanDiego, a show centered on the red, flashy thief of time. Here we have the origin story of our powerful heroine and how she came to be the thief of time we know and love today. Featuring a powerful female lead, fun characters, many characters of color and an in-depth look at many cultures, this show is both educational and fun to watch. The art style is also original as well, lending to the fight scenes and whole espionage feel quite well. Lively acting, feel-good music and refreshingly hilarious, with puns for days, this show is easily bingeable but definitely something you want to keep your eyes on.

What to Expect: Female Lead, POC Lead, Friendship, Espionage, Women Empowerment, Technology, Travel, Education, Culture, Fighting, Investigative, Mystery, Rivalry, Revenge, Siblings, Exploration, Family

Where Can I Watch? Netflix

Music: Cultural, Suspenseful, Classical, Orchestral, Pop

Does Dub Do It Justice? Yes, it does, dubbing is done by a plethora of black and brown voices to lend to the authenticity of the characters. And while several languages are used within the show the show makes it understandable for both native and learning speakers.

Digimon Adventure, 1999 PG/PG-13 (54 episodes) Finished

*Not depiction of original Digimon Adventure, this is the updated version, please see original first*

(Crunchyroll, Digimon Adventure | Official Trailer 2020)

Another classic anime, this show centers around child heroes thrust into the digital world. The digital world is a world inhabited by strange sentient creatures, Digimon, who become these kids’ best friends. They battle feral Digimon, go on crazy adventures and have a lot of friendship moments. This is a great anime for kids and a great introduction to anime. There is a lot of character development in the show, despite being a kid’s show and you’ll find that a lot of the characters will grow on you. Fun music, fun fight scenes and funny in general. This show has a lot of heart. Warning there are dark themes within the show, as there tends to be in anime but it is addressed with compassion and dignity.

Themes: Friendship, Animal Friends, Technology, Sci-Fi, Duelling, Pocket Monsters, Child Hero, Save the World, Travel, Exploration, School, Slice of Life, Brothers, Siblings, Rivalry, Death, Revenge, War, Female Leads, Ensemble Cast, Gun Violence, General Violence, Alternate Reality

Music: Alt-Rock, Techno, Orchestral

Where Can I Watch? Hulu, Crunchyroll, Amazon Prime, Netflix

Does Dub Do It Justice? Yes, the voice acting is just campy and just heartfelt enough that it works. The acting isn’t 100% but the emotion definitely is. You’ll definitely find yourself falling in love with these heroes and rooting for them the whole way.

-------

Carole and Tuesday, 2019 PG/PG-13 (24 episodes) Finished

(Netflix, Carole & Tuesday Official Trailer | English dub 2019)

After watching this you’ll wish there was a season 2 coming but there’s not. This short number is about the music industry and how indie artists get to the top. Our two protagonists are young women from totally different worlds. One, a runaway from a powerful family and the other an orphan barely scraping by in the city, come together united using the power of music. I can’t gush enough about how impactful this show is. The anime characters were designed to resemble the voice actors, the animation is clean, the music is amazing, you’ll notice some musicians resemble some very famous ones in the real world. This show talks about how music can change the world, how it can change the human heart and how making music can be one of the most beautiful, one of the most difficult things to do. I will say there is a transwoman in the show whose backstory may be slightly problematic for some. For those watching it would behoove them to read up on her backstory, however, her character is endearing in some moments and not dehumanized.

What to Expect: Musicians, Slice of Life, Female Lead, Black/POC Lead, Rivalry, Competition, Death, LGBTQIA characters, Drug Abuse, Disabled Characters, Abandonment, Transwomen, Future, Implied Child Abuse, Space Travel, Immigration, Politics, Friendship, Sexual Harassment, Alcoholism, Ensemble Cast, Imprisonment, Poverty, AI, Adoption

Music: Pop, Rock, Techno, Trance, Classical, R&B, Funk, Hip-hop, Synth, New Wave, Metal, Comedic, Concert

Where Can I Watch? Netflix, Crunchyroll, Yidio

Does Dub Do It Justice? The dubbing does extremely well, using every chance to emulate the voice actors’ behavior to sync up with the animation that you’re watching. This is extremely unique for an anime because usually, it’s very much the other way around, where the actor tries to fill the shoes of the animation.

-------

Tuca and Bertie, 2019 R/17+ (10 episodes) Ongoing

(Netflix, Tuca & Bertie | Official Trailer [HD] | Netflix 2019)

Tuca and Bertie is another show that uses anthropomorphic animals and plants to get very real-life points across. This show is about two best friends, Tuca and Bertie and their recent split. They went from roommates to neighbors and the new dynamic includes the boyfriend. Tuca is super irresponsible, a party toucan looking for something wholesome to latch onto. Bertie is a by-the-book bird that wants to have a solid career and a well-kept home. These two ideals clash, meld and become the show that you’ll for sure love. This show also delves into heavy topics such as sexual harassment, rape and how to talk about it. It discusses all this from the woman’s perspective. This show is also written by comedians Tiffany Haddish, Steve Yeun, and Ali Wong so prepare to laugh real, real hard. The show does a great job of making sure things don’t get too heavy for long and that hard topics are discussed safely. I hear, talk also that the second season of the show will be picked up by Cartoon Network and not Netflix, so be on the lookout for that coming in 2021.

What to Expect? Slice of Life, Comedy, Female Lead, Trippy, Anthropomorphic animals/plants, Alcoholism, Drug Use, Sexual Abuse, Nudity, Sexual Harassment, Coming of Age, Romance, Sex, Ghosts, Death, Implied Sexual Assault, Friendship, Competition, Rivalry, Friendship, Cooking, Work

Music: Pop, Funk, Trippy, Hip-hop

Where Can I Watch? Netflix (First season), Adultswim

Does Dub Do It Justice? The show was originally done with the English voice actors in mind. Fluid voice acting, well-written dialogue. Modern-day language that is fun and engaging.

-------

Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet, PG-13 (15 episodes) Ongoing/Abandoned

(Tokyo MX, Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet Official Trailer English dubbed 2014)

While this show may have ended prematurely, the story is certainly worth watching. This story follows two protagonists, Ensign Ledo a battle pilot of the future and Amy a carefree and curious young woman who works as a salvager of old technology. Due to unforeseen circumstance, these two drastically different individuals are made to live with one another. War-torn Ledo is shown a different way of life. However, sometimes, war will follow you, no matter how you much you want to leave it behind. Philosophical, fun, something of a tearjerker, this anime is easily bingeable with the few episodes that have made it to screen.

Themes: Sci-Fi, Space Travel, Future, Robots, Mech-Pilot, Death, War, PTSD, Cult, Flying, AI, Time Travel, Female Lead, Religion, Aliens, Exploration, Genocide, Gun Violence, General Violence, Cult, Politics, Investigative, Revenge

Music: Classical, Solemn, Battle March

Where Can I Watch? Hulu, Crunchyroll, Amazon Prime, MSN

Does Dub Do It Justice? The voice acting is serviceable, though a little cheesy with its overacting.

-------

Dragon Prince, 2018 PG-13 (27 episodes) Ongoing-Renewed for multiple seasons

(Netflix, The Dragon Prince | Official Trailer [HD] | Netflix 2018)

This anime is the typical coming-of-age youth story but done properly. This story centers on kingdoms at odds with one another due to racial differences. Growing up in this environment two princes are convinced that there is a better way and with the help of an unlikely ally, they work together to bring peace in a world of dragons. Strong character builds for everyone involved, lots of character development, and somewhat adult themes for a kid show. However, these themes are discussed thoughtfully and can actually be used as educational tools. There is a prominent deaf character in this show that signs and has an interpreter. This show allows LGBTQIA discussions as well and different relationship dynamics. Fun, bright and 3D animation finally done right. Reminiscent of Avatar, if you enjoyed that show.

What to Expect: War, Revenge, Friendship, Romance, Magic, Dragons, Mythical Creatures, Medieval Times, Brothers, Female Lead, Black/POC Lead, Exploration, Travel, Kidnapping, Ensemble Cast, Rivalry, Family, Death, Disabled Characters, Training, Fighting, Politics, Genocide, Mind Control, Coming of Age, Adoption

Music: Orchestral, Fantasy

Where Can I Watch? Netflix

Does Dub Do It Justice? The original animation is in English and the dubbing has age-appropriate voice actors for the roles of the characters they play. Some of the voice actors from Avatar are prevalent in this show. The same easy way that they talk with one another in Avatar is how they talk with one another in this show.

-------

Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts, 2020 PG/PG-13 (30 episodes) Finished

(Netflix, Season 1 Trailer | Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts 2020)

This show slaps! Yeah, I said it. This show has many black and Asian characters, a mixed-race female lead and many more diverse characters to fall in love with, as well as LGBTQIA lead as well. The premise is a post-apocalyptic world where humans are now forced to live underground due to the animal population dramatically increasing in size. These Wonderbeasts have free reign of the city, ostracizing humans, until one day, a girl from a burrow underground takes her first steps into this new world above ground. With a kicka-ss soundtrack, heartfelt voice acting, and engaging action sequences, this is an easily bingeable show.

Themes: Friendship, Family, Travel, Incarceration, Animals, War, Torture, Female Lead, LGBTQIA, Singing, Black/POC Leads, Slavery, Kidnapping, Anthropomorphic Animals, Fighting, Coming of Age, Comedy, Exploration, Technology, Future, Imprisonment, Mind Control, Revenge, Politics

Music: Dance, Acoustic, Hip-hop, Fun

Where Can I Watch? Netflix, Dreamworks

Does Dub Do It Justice? The original acting is in English. The voice actors are the age that they are supposed to play for their characters for the majority of the roles. Heartfelt performances, and the camaraderie of the characters is more than believable. You’ll laugh, you might cry but you will have fun with the help of their talented voice acting and animation.

-------

Black Lagoon, R/17+ (29 Episodes) Finished

(FUNimation, Black Lagoon Episode 1: The Black Lagoon Trailer 2008)

This anime is heavy but a well-done heavy. Thick, bloody action sequences, realistic consequences to living a life of crime in the underbelly of some of the worst criminal places in the world. Gang violence, assault, gun violence, pretty much any kind of violence is in this show. However, that is balanced out by heartfelt performances, internal character growth and impeccable comedic timing. Our Chinese-American anti-hero ( I would never call her a protagonist, lest she shoot me in the thigh to prove otherwise), Revy, is a pirate mercenary working with the Lagoon Company, a company that specializes in the transport of goods that are not exactly on the up and up. Fun, fast-paced and sometimes heartbreaking, this anime will have you on the edge of your seat and on the occasion wincing. I would describe it as a darker version of Cowboy Bebop but with a female lead. The only way this show really shows objectification is through the artists’ style of drawing, other than that the women on the show play pivotal roles and their presence bears a lot of weight in the overall anime.

Themes: Female Lead, Black/POC Characters, Death, Gun Violence, Gangs, Child Death, Rape, Religion, Drug Use, Alcohol Use, General Violence,Travel, Exploration, Prostitution, Historical Fiction, Black/POC Lead, Narration-style, Tragedy, Rivalry, PTSD, Modern Day, Soldiers, War, Criminals, Duelling, Revenge, Politics, Child Trafficking

Music: Rock, Rave, Classical, Synth, Electric Guitar

Where Can I Watch? Hulu, Funimation, Amazon Prime, Crunchyroll

Does Dub Do It Justice? Yes, it does. The characters in the show are great at portraying the angsty badass lifestyle that they lead. Modern-day talking, very fluid acting and brutal cursing done well.

-------

Tiger and Bunny, 2011 PG-13 (25 episodes) Ongoing

(Viz Media, Official Tiger & Bunny DVD and blu-ray Trailer 2013)

In this anime, superheroes are kind of like a major sports team, heavily advertised and always on TV. Fighting crime is now something that gets filmed and rated just like everything else. Our two main protagonists are superheroes that are working with the best, however, their careers are drastically different from one another. Tiger, a down-and-out hero, getting old, now has to train an upstart young new hero, Bunny. Working together comes with a lot of challenges but as they begin to work together, they and the world begin to see the real potential in heroes. This show is fast-paced, flashy and a lot of fun. You will definitely find yourself laughing. If you’ve seen Naruto, it’s almost as if a middle-aged Naruto and Sasuke were buddy cops in their later years. However, the show’s storyline is a full-on murder mystery which is what keeps the show in focus and has you watching episode after episode to learn more. With memorable characters, great dialogue and a fluid storyline, this show doesn’t pull punches and isn’t afraid to be a little cheesy along the way-but gooey good cheese, I promise.

Themes: Superheroes, POC Lead, Modern Day, Mystery, Death, Robots, LGBTQIA characters, Capitalism, Family, Friendship, Romance, Fighting, Terrorism, Cult, Politics, Reality Star, Coming of Age, Rivalry, Black/POC Characters, Competition, Revenge, Singing, Exercise, Ensemble Cast, Alcohol, Slice of Life

Music: Acoustic, Orchestral, Classical, March

Does Dub Do It Justice? Absolutely. The dubbing in this is fluid acting done well. Emotions are clearly felt and the lines are delivered precisely. These voice actors will have you laughing and quite possibly empathizing with their lives.

-------

Cannon Busters, 2019, PG/PG-13 (12 episodes) Ongoing

(Netflix, Cannon Busters | Official Trailer | Netflix 2019)

This anime is one of those anime that couples lightheartedness with heavy themes. This form of storytelling takes place in a futuristic world with the setup being three companions of different organic and inorganic components (we’ll leave it a mystery for now) join together upon a chance meeting. S.A.M, Casey Turnbuckle and Billy the Kid, are working together to avoid not only Billy’s bounty catching up to him but to help S.A.M to find a missing prince. With a kickass transforming car-robot, powerful self-driven women galore and bumping music track, this show not only features nearly an entirely black and brown style cast visually, it also does the same for the dubbed cast as well! While this show does have minor misogyny pop up because Billy is crass, it is quickly squelched. Not to mention no forced romantic storylines as far as the eye can see, which is always refreshing in a show.

Themes: Giant Robot, Travel, Future, Comedy, Friendship, War, Kidnapping, General Violence, Female Lead, Black/POC Lead, Adventure, Exploration, Gun Violence, Fighting, Western, Misogyny, Magic, Physical Abuse, Partners in Crime, Revenge, Gangs, Cyborgs, Arcade

Music: Rock, Hip-hop, Western

Where Can I Watch? Netflix

Does Dub Do It Justice? With a nearly all black and brown voice-cast, this dubbing is refreshingly authentic! With perfect comedic timing and heartfelt performances, this show is a wild ride through voices alone!

I hope you enjoy list number three and continue to further your search for more inclusive anime. If you find any please feel free to post details on my Facebook page Lady Sophystra. I post regular anime updates on Twitter under @SolasLady. I will say this was a fun thing to write during a particularly difficult time in my life. This anime is dedicated to a wonderful friend of mine who recently passed away. He loved life, loved photography and film. His laughter was infectious and he always encouraged me right before we got on stage. His thunderous voice was so very fitting for the role he played. I'll miss you Papa Agwe, it was your strength that pushed me when I needed it most. Love you always and let there be rain!
