Sports' Sweetest Spring Sensations
DiJonai Carrington
Recently drafted by the WNBA's Connecticut Sun, DiJonai Carrington is coming off of a successful final season in college basketball. The San Diego, California native led Baylor with 56 steals in 27 games. She scored 14.1 points per game which was second best on the team. Baylor went 28-3, making it to the Final Four. Carrington started just one game in the 2020-21 season. She had five games with at least 20 points and 10 games with at least three steals. She scored 19 points and stole the ball four times, leading Baylor to an Elite Eight win over Michigan during the NCAA Tournament.
Prior to the 2020-21 season, Carrington competed for Stanford. During the 2018-19 season Carrington averaged 13.7 points and 7.6 rebounds per game.
Elani "La La" Rice
Utah State track star Elani Rice is a senior sprinter. Her most recent victory on the track came on April 10, when she was one fourth of the 400-meter relay team for Utah State at the 2021, Aggie Invitational. She transferred to Utah State after competing at Cal State Fullerton in 2019 when the school won the Big West championship. During her high school days at El Camino Real Charter School in West Hills, California, she was a two-time team MVP as a sophomore and senior. During her senior year in high school she was a league champ in the 100 and 200 meter dashes.
Along with being a student athlete in track and field, Rice is a model with NIYA Management.
Shakira Austin
Shakira Austin is a six-foot-five forward at Ole Miss. She led her team to the WNIT final, where she scored 25 points, grabbed nine rebounds, blocked five shots and stole the ball two times. She led her team in many categories including scoring (18.6), rebounds (9.1), blocks (1.8), and steals (1.6). In seven post season games she averaged 20.7 points and 10.3 rebounds per game. Austin posted 13 double-doubles and had just as many games with at least 20 points. Prior to attending Ole Miss, she competed for Maryland during the 2018-19 and 2019-20 seasons.
Jumyia Denning
Jumyia Denning is in the midst of her finest collegiate season at Morehead State. The junior earned a win in the 400-meter relay at the Joe Haines Invite on April 3, as well as wins in the 400-meter relay and 1,600-meter relay at the Margaret Simmons Invite, March 27. Last season she earned indoor wins in the 1,600-meter relay at the John Craft 2020 meet and in the 60 meters at the Marshall Invitational. Prior to the 2020, season, the sprinter competed for Eastern Kentucky. She earned her first collegiate win there when she won the 400-meter relay at the Centre College Track & Field Twilight meet. Denning is a senior who is a native of Louisville, Kentucky, where she was a graduate of Eastern High School.
Dina Karwoski
When the Legends Football League formerly known as the Lingerie Football League was rising in popularity, a familiar face and body was Dina Karwoski. The physical, brash and ultra-body positive linebacker brought fun and personality to the game. The controversial and revealing uniforms that the league once wore was initially a problem for Karwoski but she turned them into a positive. "It forces you out of a comfort zone," she once said in an interview. "It forces you to take on things that you would see as insecurities and make them empower you." In 2017 the veteran helped to lead her team the Legends Cup Championship game, where as a member of the Atlanta Steam she won the LFL's Eastern Conference Championship. "I'm putting on a show from both football and a human aspect ... I want to leave a legacy in this league that will allow girls that are 14 [and] 15 years old to come up and have a platform to play competitive football ..."
