The Difference Between a Bitch and a Woman Surviving Constant Abuse and Trauma

From survival mode to sovereignty: reclaiming what was never meant to be taken

By THE HONED CRONEPublished 4 months ago • 3 min read

There is a word society loves to throw at women who stop cooperating.

Bitch.

It appears the moment a woman develops boundaries. The moment she says no. The moment she questions authority. The moment she stops smiling on command. The moment she refuses to provide endless emotional labour, sexual access, caregiving, forgiveness, money, energy, attention, or compliance.

A woman can spend decades being kind, accommodating, generous, self-sacrificing, forgiving, patient, nurturing, attractive, productive, and available.

The second she becomes difficult to access, she becomes a bitch.

But there is a profound difference between a bitch and a woman surviving chronic abuse.

A woman who has lived through exploitation often understands something that others do not.

She has learned that not everyone who approaches her has good intentions.

She has learned that charm can hide manipulation.

She has learned that kindness can be weaponized.

She has learned that love can be impersonated.

She has learned that predators do not arrive wearing signs around their necks.

They arrive smiling.

After enough betrayal, a woman’s nervous system changes.

She becomes more observant.

More cautious.

More particular.

More protective of her time, energy, body, finances, and peace.

People who benefited from her lack of boundaries may interpret this transformation as hostility.

It is not hostility.

It is wisdom.

Many women are expected to survive impossible contradictions.

Be beautiful but not vain.

Be sexual but not too sexual.

Be nurturing but not needy.

Be ambitious but not threatening.

Earn money but never intimidate men.

Provide emotional support but never require any.

Stay calm when violated.

Stay pleasant when dismissed.

Stay attractive while exhausted.

Stay forgiving while being harmed.

Stay silent while being erased.

Smile.

Perform.

Endure.

Repeat.

And if years of abuse finally produce anger?

That anger becomes the problem instead of the abuse that created it.

A woman who has spent a lifetime being used for her body, her labour, her attention, her resources, or her emotional capacity may eventually reach a breaking point.

Not because she is weak.

Because she is human.

There comes a moment when survival stops looking like compliance.

It starts looking like fire.

The world often mistakes this fire for bitterness.

Sometimes it is grief.

Sometimes it is outrage.

Sometimes it is the healthy immune response of a human soul refusing further violation.

The woman who has temporarily exiled herself from unhealthy relationships is not necessarily antisocial.

She may be rebuilding.

She may be learning who she is outside of obligation.

She may be reclaiming sovereignty that was taken from her long before she had language for what was happening.

She may be discovering that her value was never located in her usefulness to others.

It was located within her all along.

She is not a hag because she is aging.

She is not broken because she is healing.

She is not difficult because she has standards.

She is not a bitch because she protects herself.

She is a warrior.

A woman who has walked through fire and emerged carrying wisdom.

A woman who refuses to surrender her humanity despite everything that tried to destroy it.

A woman who continues to create.

To love.

To learn.

To speak.

To build.

To heal.

To transform suffering into art, insight, courage, and truth.

The world may call her angry.

The world may call her difficult.

The world may call her intimidating.

But those are often the names given to women who finally stop volunteering for their own exploitation.

She knows who she is now.

Strong.

Beautiful.

Wise.

Sovereign.

And no longer available for anyone who mistakes her kindness for permission to take.
