Mason led Leni up to the third floor of the building where she went into one of the communal bathrooms to clean herself up a little. While she was in there, Mason went into the male bathroom and threw out the condom wrapper and the soiled condom, still folded up in a piece of paper. After they both finished up, they made their way to Mason and Josh’s dorm.
Once inside, Leni hopped onto Mason’s bed, knowing instantly which one was his. Mason’s side of the room had a large calendar on the wall with his class and work schedule all over it. Josh’s side was covered in posters of baseball players and Sports Illustrated models.
Josh wasn’t there, still not back from practice yet. So, while Leni sat there, Mason started undressing, taking off the dirty clothes he had worn to work and changing into a clean t-shirt and jeans.
Leni looked around the dorm. “Are the girls' dorms similar to this?” she asked.
“Yeah,” Mason told her. “They are exactly the same.”
“Nice,” Leni commented. “Was it hard to go from your own room to a dorm?”
“I have four older brothers,” Mason reminded her, turning away from the dresser and facing her. “I never had my own room.”
Mason had stripped out of his work clothes and tossed the dirty clothes in a nearby hamper. When he turned towards Leni, he was standing there in only a pair of boxer briefs. Leni couldn’t help but stare at his body. Mason was 5’12 and was incredibly built from years of playing sports with his brothers. He continued to work out when he had time between classes and work in order to maintain his body shape. He was incredibly handsome and even though Leni knew she was being very obvious with her stares, she didn’t care. She just couldn’t help herself, especially when it came to his 6-pack abs and the dark hair on them that went down into his boxers.
“See something you like?” Mason asked her, chuckling.
Leni’s eyes shot up to his. “Sorry,” she replied, her face turning red. “How do you not have every girl on campus crawling after you?” she asked.
Mason shrugged. “I never really paid much attention. My studies are really important to me. Besides,” he said, taking a step towards her, “there’s only one girl on my mind these days.”
Before Mason could get any closer to Leni, the sound of the doorknob turning sent Mason back to the other side of the room, as far from Leni as he could get.
The door opened and Josh walked in, first looking at Mason then, seeing his sister sitting on the bed, he smiled.
“Leni!” he exclaimed, excited to see her. He dropped his gym bag on the floor, walking over to his sister and holding out his arms to hug her.
“Hey Josh,” she said, jumping off the bed and hugging her older brother.
While they were still hugging, Josh looked over at his roommate. Mason had put a clean pair of jeans on, but was still shirtless.
“Jesus, Mason,” Josh said to his friend. “Put some damn clothes on. We have a lady in here.”
“Never stopped you before,” Mason called back, as he slipped into a grey t-shirt.
Leni couldn’t help but giggle at the interaction between the two of them.
Stepping back from Leni, Josh bent down, grabbing his gym bag and throwing it on his bed. “How’s the visit going?” he asked her. “Checking out your new stompin’ grounds?”
Leni chuckled, sitting at one of the desks in the room. “Sure am. Brian, mom and I went on a tour this morning. Now I’m just hanging out while they go to a bunch of meetings.”
Josh pointed to Leni, but faced Mason. “Did I tell you?” he asked Mason. “She got accepted into UF.”
“No, you didn’t,” Mason said. “I assumed when I saw her and your parents on campus.”
“Little smarty-pants nerd is going to be a scientist,” Josh teased her, walking over to her and tussling her hair.
“Shut up,” Leni laughed, pushing his hand away.
‘Hottest scientist ever,’ Mason couldn’t help but think to himself, imagining Leni in a lab coat bent over a desk.
“So what’s the plan for the evening?” Josh asked. “You want us to take you out? Show you the campus bar?”
“Brian made reservations at Apple Grace’s for seven,” Leni told Josh. “Other than that, nothing.”
“Fantastic!” Josh exclaimed. He went into his own dresser and grabbed some clean clothes. “I’m going to hop in the shower,” he told both Leni and Mason, throwing a towel over his shoulder. “Get out of these gross practice clothes, and then I’ll take you around campus. You want to join us, Mason?” Josh asked his roommate.
Mason shrugged, attempting to look nonchalant. “Sure, sounds like fun.”
Josh held a thumbs up to the room. “Cool. I’ll be back in ten minutes.”
Opening the door, Josh left the room, closing it again behind himself.
Immediately, Mason and Leni looked at each other. They remained silent for a second as if they were both worried Josh would return. When it had been over twenty seconds, Leni said, “how long do his showers normally last?”
Mason grinned, crossing the room towards Leni. “At least thirty minutes.”
Coming from a family that wasn’t close at all, sitting with Leni and Josh’s family for dinner made Mason feel so loved and warm inside. He couldn’t remember the last time his entire family (mom, dad and four brothers) had dinner together. Even on Christmas Day, it ended up only being him, his mom and two of brothers as everyone else was either working or somewhere else for the holiday. He loved watching Brian joking to both his kids and making them laugh. He could tell Carrie loved both Josh and Leni so incredibly much and she was so proud of everything they did. She asked them both so many questions about school and all other activities, listening to every word they said and smiling as they spoke. Spending time with this family made Mason so happy imagining his future with Leni.
After everyone ordered, Mason stood up from the table. “Excuse me,” he said. “I’m just going to go use the bathroom.”
The moment he was up, Carrie also pushed back her chair, standing up as well. “That’s a good idea, Mason. I’m going to go wash my hands before the bread arrives.”
Mason walked beside Carrie, the two of them making their way to the bathrooms at the other end of the restaurant.
Once they were out of earshot of the table, Carrie spoke to Mason.
“I was actually hoping to speak to you privately, if that’s alright,” she said.
“Yes, of course,” Mason said.
On the opposite wall of the bathrooms was the restaurant bar. Mason held out his hand, directing Carrie to an empty table in the bar where they could sit down and be out of the way of all the servers and also not blocking the entrance to the bathrooms.
“How are things going with Leni?” was the first thing Carrie asked him.
Mason smiled. “Really well. She’s an incredible woman and being with her makes me happier than I ever imagined.”
Carrie smiled, hearing this from Mason.
“You two have been intimate with each other, right?”
Before he could answer, Mason’s face turned red. He knew Leni and Carrie were very close and that they told each other everything. He tried to not sound uncomfortable as he answered.
“Yes, we have,” he said.
“You’re being safe?”
He nodded. “Yes, we’ve used condoms every time.”
“Good,” Carrie said. Seeing how uncomfortable Mason was, Carrie softened her voice. “I didn’t pull you aside to interrogate you,” she assured him. “Just me being a concerned mom.”
Mason smiled softly. “No, I understand.”
Relaxing and leaning back in the chair, Carrie said, “I want you to know,” Carrie started, “Leni is very happy.” This made Mason smile genuinely, no longer feeling uncomfortable from the topic of sex with Leni.
He only knew how happy Leni was based on what she told him. He had hoped she was based on how he felt being with her, but there was always wonder deep within himself of how honest she was being. Being in a long-distance relationship was hard, after all. So hearing from Leni’s mother that she could see and tell in her daughter that she was actually very happy, he felt elated.
“There hasn’t been a single date you two have been on that she hasn’t come home smiling and in the greatest mood ever.”
“Really?” Mason asked, knowing full well, every time he had to leave Leni, he was upset he wouldn’t see her for a while, but he wore the biggest smile on his face the whole drive home thinking about her and the time they had spent with each other.
“Every day you have spent with each other, either that night or the next day, she gives me details of everything you two did together. She goes on and on about what you talked about, things you said that made her smile or laugh.” Carrie had the biggest smile on her face as she told all this to Mason, clearly so happy to see her daughter like this.
“Leni went through some shit with her ex,” Carrie explained. “I was really worried the next person she dated would be the same, or, even if he was slightly better, he would still make her feel like crap the way the last one did, but she would defend it, saying ‘he’s not as bad as James was.’ That is not the case with you.”
Carrie reached out and took Mason’s hand. “I want you to know, I am really happy you two found each other. I think you are really great together and I completely support you and trust you with my daughter.”
Mason smiled, looking at Carrie. “Thank you so much, Carrie. I want you to know I will watch out for her next year and take care of her.”
She smiled at him. “I know you will, Mason.”
When they returned to the table, Josh and Brian had their heads down, reading baseball stats together, completely oblivious to the amount of time Carrie and Mason had been gone for. Leni clued in immediately, knowing full well Mason had just gotten the ‘mom talk’ from Carrie.
“Oh my goodness, boys,” Carrie said, sitting back in her chair. “Get off the phone.”
Leni looked at Mason as he sat beside her in his chair. From under the table, in her lap, Leni held up a thumbs up to Mason, asking him how the talk had gone.
Mason smiled at her, holding up a thumbs up of his own.
When dinner was finished and the bill was paid, the group headed out of the restaurant. Carrie and Brian asked Leni if she would be coming back to the hotel with them, but Leni said she was hoping to go out with Josh and Mason to one of the campus bars. She promised she would stay with the boys all night and not go off on her own and that she would be back at the hotel the next morning to head back home.
After exchanging Good-byes, Brian and Carrie walked to their car while the young adults started the short walk back to campus.
“What are you thinking?” Josh asked Leni. “There’s two different bars on campus we could check out. One is a sports bar, so might not be your scene,” he teased Leni. “There’s also a club we could go to. It isn’t on campus but it’s really close. Lots of UF students go there.”
“I think just a bar or pub,” Leni answered. “Not really in a dancing mood.”
“Sounds good,” Josh said. “You coming, Mason?”
“Absolutely.”
The group walked back to campus, running into a couple of Josh’s team mates on the way. Mason couldn’t help but notice when Josh introduced Leni to them and a few of them checked Leni out, Josh was quick to shut them down, saying his sister was off-limits. Mason couldn’t help but wonder if there was a reason Josh had never made that rule about Leni to him.
At the campus bar, they easily found a free table, climbing onto the tall chairs. Josh was the only one of the 3 of them who was 21. Mason’s birthday was a month away and Leni was only 18, turning 19 in September, so Josh ordered a beer while Mason and Leni ordered Cokes.
They sat together for a long time, chatting about school and summer plans. Leni and Josh brought up to Mason their annual family trip to Key West. Mason remembered Josh telling him about the trip last year during their first year as roommates. It was the first time Josh invited Mason on a family trip. Unfortunately at the time, Mason needed to go home to Maine during the summer. This year, however, when Josh brought up the trip and invited Mason, Mason happily accepted, planning on spending only a few weeks home in Maine.
Their family always rented a large house right on the beach and spent two weeks there at the end of August enjoying the sand and sun before going back to school.
While Leni told Mason about the Aquarium in Key West and how going there when she was kid made her want to study biology, Mason put his hand on Leni’s thigh. He loved listening to her talk about her interests and he couldn’t wait to go there and see her in a place she loved so much.
After about an hour of the group sitting there, Josh’s eyes perked up, looking towards the other end of the bar where a gorgeous blond was ordering a drink.
“If you two don’t mind,” he said, hopping off his chair. “I’m going to go say hi to a good friend of mine. Don’t wait up,” he said, winking at Mason.
Mason and Leni watched him as he walked across the bar towards the woman. They clearly already knew each other as she smiled big and bright when she saw Josh approaching. Mason recognized the girl. She was someone Josh had hooked up with a few times.
“Is he like that all the time?” Leni asked Mason
Mason sipped from his glass and nodded. “He’s quite the man-whore,” Mason said, making Leni giggle.
“Do you want to see my prom dress?” Leni asked Mason.
“Of course I do,” Mason said, smiling.
Pulling her cell phone out of her cross-body bag, Leni opened her photos app and scrolled through.
Leni had been talking about her senior prom quite a bit. Unfortunately, the school didn’t allow students to have outside guests so Leni wasn’t able to ask Mason to be her date. At first she said she wasn’t going to go, but Mason encouraged her to go and just have fun with her friends. Plus, he could tell she had been really excited to go dress shopping and he didn’t want her to miss out on any of it just because of him.
Turning her phone towards him, Mason’s eyes bugged out as he looked at the photo of Leni in a floor length gown. It was quite simple in comparison to the massive ball gowns he had seen girls wearing at his own prom. It was a slim fitting dark red dress with a V-shaped neckline and a slit in the skirt that went all the way up to above her knee. The picture she showed him had clearly been taken when the dress was purchased as in it, she was standing on a store pedestal, surrounded by mirrors. And, even though she had minimal makeup and her hair was pulled up into a basic ponytail, she still looked so beautiful. Mason couldn’t imagine how she was going to look the day of her actual prom.
“Wow,” was all Mason could say as he stared at the picture of Leni in the dress. “You look beyond stunning.”
Leni blushed. “I just wish you could be there,” she told him, putting her phone back in her bag.
Now that Josh was gone, Mason was able to take Leni’s hand. “Don’t worry about me, just go have so much fun with your friends. But please,” he added, “send me photos when you are all dolled up and ready to go. You are going to be the most gorgeous woman there.”
Still blushing, Leni looked down at their hands. Mason leaned over and kissed her gently on the cheek. He should have looked around to see if Josh was nearby, but in the moment, he didn’t care.
“I am planning on telling Josh and Brian soon,” she told him.
“Really?” Mason asked, smiling. Based on his conversation with Carrie earlier that evening, he wasn’t worried about what Brian would say. He knew Josh would have the biggest issue at first, but he was hopeful Josh would see they were serious about one another and give their relationship his blessing.
“I know you can’t come to my prom,” Leni said. “But after I tell them, would you come to my high school graduation?” she asked.
“Of course, Leni,” Mason answered without hesitation.
Leni smiled again, grinning from ear to ear. “I can’t wait for you to be there.”
This time, before Mason kissed her, he looked across the bar. Josh was facing away from them, talking to the blond at the bar. Knowing Josh wasn’t looking their way, Mason leaned into Leni and very gently touched his lips to hers. When she kissed him back, Mason squeezed her hand that he was still holding. They kissed each other so softly, feeling each other’s lips move against one another's.
For a while now, Mason’s feelings towards Leni had started to change. He hadn’t been brave enough to tell her yet, worried about how she would react. But, he thought as they continued kissing at the table, maybe tonight was the perfect time to finally tell her.
Very slowly, Mason pulled away from Leni but continued holding her hand.
“Want to get out of here?” he asked her.
“What about Josh?”
At the same time, the two of them looked in Josh’s direction. He was now fully making out with the girl at the bar.
“I don’t think we have to worry about him tonight,” Mason commented.
After getting down from his chair, Mason held out his hand to Leni, helping her down from the tall chair, then, hand in hand, they left the bar together.
