Billy’s ranting to his mother about his science teacher.

“Mum, she made me look foolish in class. I asked a question, she refused to answer.”

“How’d she respond to your question?” Mum asks.

“She asked what I thought or how I’d research the question. Why couldn’t she give me the answer? Isn’t that her job?” Billy frustratedly responds.

“Her job? Honey, she wants you to realise that education should accustom you to think for yourself, not give you all the answers!” Mum explains.

Billy looks at his mother, clearly thinking through her response. That light bulb moment registering seconds later.

I was challenged to write a drabble of the word ‘accustom'.

Wikipedia defines a drabble as follows :

A drabble is a short work of fiction of precisely one hundred words in length. The purpose of the drabble is brevity, testing the author's ability to express interesting and meaningful ideas in a confined space.

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.
