The Night Hunter

The rays of the sun had begun to fade. The burning orb had already slid beneath the skyline. The Night Hunter woke then as the first star opened its eye and began its nightly vigil, keeping watch high above the earth.

The Night Hunter stretched, shaking the sleep from his limbs, and yawned loudly. The thirst was upon him. He looked down at his belly. It gurgled in frustration at its emptiness. Strange, he thought, I never awaken this hungry.

The Night Hunter arose from his hiding place, high in the Cathedral tower, and peered out over the hunting grounds. Down below, a hundred taxicabs and buses were passing in the night. It was a veritable buffet of prey.

With nary a look behind him, The Night Hunter stepped to the edge of the Cathedral wall and stepped off. For a moment he plummeted like a stone. His heart beat wildly in his chest as he fell. All at once, he spread his silken appendages and the wind caught him and suspended him in the air.

Riding the updraft down, The Night Hunter’s keen senses sought for a proper victim. It couldn’t be just anyone. No, it had to be the blood of the evildoer. He must only take the scourge of mankind.

His feet touched down on a low-lying fire escape. He glanced around to see if the mortals who inhabited this place had heard the tinkle of his arrival. They had not. He would wait a moment and then push on.

His stomach churned within him; the hunger was like a fire inside. In his whole existence he could not remember being this hungry before. Agitated at his weakness, he pushed off from the fire escape and glided gently to the ground.

The Night Hunter waited, watching with glittery eyes. He would soon see his victim. He could wait, but not for long. The hunger would make him weak soon.

Luckily, he would not have to wait long. From his hiding place, he could see a group of females coming along. All prim and proper, they had prepared for a night of debauchery. Their eyes wanton, their gestures animated, they dared any male to come near them. The males who did come near would be treated to a feast that they would never forget.

The Night Hunter smiled and licked his lips. He let his tongue lap over his teeth. The sharp canine teeth were long and pointed. He had found his prey. It was not this pack of females, no, his prey was just behind them.

Lurking behind this group of princesses was a killer. He stalked silently behind them, waiting watching. The killer was almost ready. One of the females would die; her blood would run.

The Night Hunter could feel the killer’s hunger. His own hunger was not like the hunger emanating from this evil killer. He, the Night Hunter, only killed from need, mostly. He would perish without the blood. This filthy killer, skulking along behind this group of innocents, killed for fun. He enjoyed it, he reveled in it.

The Night Hunter tensed; his senses were clean and sharp now. He waited, his very breath caught in his chest. Then, just as the evil one was about to strike, the evil hand was outstretched to do harm, the Night Hunter leapt from his hiding place. Like a ghost, he soared unseen over he heads of the unsuspecting females. They saw nothing, and felt only the winds as he sailed past them.

His teeth were bared as he hit this would be assailant in the chest. The killer was knocked off his feet. The killer toppled off his feet, and sailed into an adjacent alleyway. He tumbled end over end and crashed noisily into a dumpster at the end of the alley.

Instantly, the Night Hunter was on his victim. He would not kill this one right away, oh no. He would savor the kill.

The Night Hunter pummeled his victim with a vicious series of hits and then picked the vermin up and tossed him across the alley. The Night Hunter’s quick reflexes allowed him to also catch the tumbling evildoer. The stunned killer came alive then. With a wild look on his grimy face, the killer struggled in Night Hunter’s grip. He fought back against his impending death. The Night Hunter lazily batted away the soft fleshy attempts at escape.

With a smile on his face, the Night Hunter lessened his grip on his victim. The victim pulled away and in a panic fled from the nightmare he suddenly found himself in. He ran crazily away. He could not hear anything following him so he glanced back over his shoulder. The Night Hunter hit him from behind.

The Night Hunter could feel the sun coming up so he quickly finished the deed. He pressed his mouth to the neck of his victim. His teeth penetrated the neck and tore the jugular. The hot blood flooded his mouth. After a space of time, his victim twitched once and then was still. The Night Hunter flung his victim from him and rose in the air.

High above the city, in the light of day, the Night Hunter sleeps in a Cathedral Bell Tower. His stomach is full and he sleeps a dreamless sleep. Down below, the cattle of the world, the humans, concerned with their own passions, never notice that death has visited them. It will visit them again, tonight.
