The House That Never Dies

Fictional Short Story

Down the long gravel road past the river in the depths of the woods sits a house once owned by Cole and Susie Miner. To most this house just looks like a normal house. It is well kept and is a stunning sight to see, but the town’s people know more than what meets the eye.

Here is how the story goes:

On a bright summer morning in 1692 Cole Miner stood outside a run down home with his bride at his side. His torn leather boots were covered in the dust of the ground from walking the empty creek beds to get to their new home.

He looked up at the two story home thinking it was a mansion. He tucked his hands in his trousers and knocked the dirt off his boots and turned to his wife with a grin on his dirt covered face.

“Cole, what is this?” Susie asked as she stood by her husband’s side staring up at the largest home she had ever seen.

Susie came from a family that worked the mines and never knew what it would be like to even see a large home. She looked up at the cracked windows thinking it was paradise.

She thought that if this was actually theirs and this wasn’t a dream she would cherish every moment in this home.

She could not even fathom the idea that they could afford something like this because they were one in the same. Both Cole and Susie came from a long line of coal miners. Actually they got their last name from what they do because it is apart of who they are and who they thought they would always be. Their family started coal mining when it first was discovered in the early 1600’s. They knew that was what all the men would have to do and they accepted the pain and turmoil of their destiny. They never dreamed they would get to enjoy a home like this when they weren’t working the mines.

“It’s our new home, Susie!” Cole said as he swept his wife off her feet and carried her through the front door that broke off one of the hinges as he flung it open. The door hung by one side and he just laughed and said. “It’s a fixer upper, but it’s ours, darlin.”

Cole found the home on one of his walks back from the mine. No one lived in it and after a lot of questioning he came to the conclusion that no one owned it so he and his wife would take this home and make it into the mansion of their dreams.

Susie kissed him with the most excitement that she had ever felt in her entire life. Over their life time they fixed the home up and kept it nice for their entire lives. They raised 3 daughters and two sons in that home, had 2 dogs, a cat, and a pet raccoon for a little while.

The night their first child, little Ruthie, was born, there was a storm that threatened their lives. That night Cole and Susie made a vow to their home looking out their large bedroom window at the storm they vowed that if it would continue to stand and they got through the night they would never stop fixing the house.

To this day in 2023, no one but Cole and Susie Miner have lived in the home. No one knows who built it and no one knows how it still stands without any damage. No one has walked into the home or went on the property since the family died mysteriously in 1742. At least everyone thought they died because one day they walked in and never came back out.

Some say they gave their soul to that house and it’s alive. Others say that they can see the ghost of the family watching out the upstairs bedroom window on the anniversary of the storm and their vow. No one knows what actually happened and how that home still stands without flaws.
