The Forgotten City

A Dystopian Tale of Memory and Identity

By Moh ArabyPublished about a year ago 3 min read

In a distant future, the world had been ravaged by war and ecological disaster. The survivors had retreated into vast underground cities, where they lived in isolation from the outside world.

One of these cities was called New Hope. It was a sprawling network of tunnels and chambers, home to thousands of people. The residents of New Hope had little contact with the outside world, and they had no memory of their past lives.

The leaders of New Hope had implemented a policy of selective memory erasure. They believed that the memories of the past were too painful and traumatic, and that it was better for the residents to live in ignorance.

But one day, a young woman named Ava began to have strange dreams. In her dreams, she saw a world that was different from the one she knew. She saw blue skies, green forests, and vast oceans.

Ava became obsessed with her dreams. She began to ask questions, to search for answers. She discovered that there was a world outside New Hope, a world that had been forgotten.

Ava knew that she had to leave New Hope. She knew that she had to find the truth, to uncover the secrets of the forgotten world.

She gathered a small group of people who shared her curiosity and together they set out into the unknown.

As they journeyed through the tunnels, they encountered many obstacles. They had to avoid security patrols, navigate treacherous tunnels, and find food and water.

But they also discovered incredible things. They found old books with pictures of the outside world, and they saw glimpses of the beauty that had been lost. They found remnants of the past, artifacts that spoke to a time long forgotten.

As they traveled deeper into the unknown, they encountered a group of people who lived on the surface. They were a community of survivors who had adapted to the harsh conditions of the world above.

The surface dwellers welcomed Ava and her group. They shared stories of their survival, and they showed them the wonders of the world above.

Ava was amazed by what she saw. She saw the beauty of nature, the power of the sun, and the vastness of the sky. She saw the potential for a new world, a world that could be rebuilt from the ruins of the past.

But as she looked out over the horizon, she realized something. She had a choice to make. She could stay in the forgotten world, where her memories and identity were controlled by others, or she could embrace the unknown and forge a new path.

Ava realized that she could not go back to New Hope. She knew that she could not live in a world that was built on lies and secrets. She knew that she had to embrace the unknown, to find her own way.

Together with her group, Ava decided to stay on the surface. They joined the community of survivors, and they began to rebuild. They cleared away the rubble, planted gardens, and built new homes.

As they worked, Ava felt a sense of freedom she had never known before. She was no longer bound by the rules and restrictions of New Hope. She was free to explore, to learn, to grow.

She realized that the forgotten city was not just a place, but a state of mind. It was a world where memory and identity were controlled, where the past was buried and the future was uncertain.

But on the surface, Ava had found a new world. A world where memory and identity were embraced, where the past was remembered and the future was full of possibility.

As she looked out over the green fields and blue skies, she knew that she had made the right choice. She had found her place in the world, a place where she could be free to be herself, to learn, and to grow.
