The Candle Covens

Where holiday magic comes from

By Shelby Hagood Published 9 months ago β€’ 3 min read

Energy and ease for the winter to come. Lift up any hex that keeps them from their sum. Keep up the optimism for after the holidays because all will have warm tea for all of their stays.

Our coven chanted into the air of the night before Halloween, starting to turn chilly. We are witches of a candle coven who light candles with complimentary scents with our spells. We call ourselves the Charm Candle Coven. The candles of Halloween are Orange with a bergamot scent that is for clean energy and optimism. The black candle has a bit of a green tint because it is the scent of vetiver to stay at ease. I knew the next candles we would light were to be the thanksgiving candles which would be orange and brown. The brown was usually a cinnamon scent. Cinnamon always brought great blessings among everyone's homes.

People always wondered during a holiday why it felt like there was magic in the air. They believed it was just the excitement of the holidays, but it was us spreading our magic out to others so that they feel sustained. We were the opposite of the other candle coven of the city called the Curse Candle Coven. They spread curses on these nights, those who paid to set a curse upon someone. The orange for them was rotten for someone to obtain the energy of evil and they would never use vetiver, their scent was probably that of a black rotten banana peel. They concentrated their magic all on one person instead of spreading it around like us. For pay they would too concentrate a good spell on someone. The green candle on St. Patrick's day was for wealth. Many people would pay hundreds in order for this spell to be cast solely upon them. It didn't always go well for them though, because a bit of their rot would transfer over into their good candles.

"There you are giving your magic away for free again," the head of the Curse Candle Coven tsked at us. Cassandra whipped her robes at us and cackled.

"Doing spells for money, how commercial. Not exactly authentic witch to me," Our leader Cirina picked up the candles and started packing them into her satchel.

"How about you let us buy some of your pure candles off of you," Cassandra flashed money into Cirina's face.

"I am sure you would still find a way to unfortunately get your rot into them," Cirina cackled herself and gestured for us to be on our way.

"You will sell out some day. I will be sure of that. My rot will consume you! Your one day of magic for everyone vs. my weeks of concentrated magic for the individual! I have used the curse candles on you!" Cassandra yelled back at her and trotted off. We had already used our witching hour power for the town so we could only take away so much of the hex with the power we still had left, but we at least got the curse down to one week instead of one month. We just had to keep an eye on Cirina for that time. We couldn't let Cassandra have our completely pure candles on her hands. Paying for good luck needed to have a bad side effect or it would be too good.

In the next week, Cassandra kept trying to come around and coax Cirina into letting her buy off the candles. Cirina wanted to some of the times, but we helped her through it. Cassandra and her coven then at some point tried to steal the candles, but we kept her back through teamwork. Our candles would continue to be used for everyone's day of good fortune to use during the witching hour before each holiday to keep the holiday magic for the day alive and well.
