Prologue:

I am not religious but am probably agnostic/atheist, but I have a love of stone circles and ancient mysticism and do believe we can take comfort in nature.

I remember visiting the Rollright Stones and there was definitely something there, the wind avoided the stones while I was there.

I also believe that if you have problems of any kind, it helps to talk to someone or something, to help you deal with things.

Do not bottle things up.

The music is "Stone Circle" by The Third Ear Band from their album "Alchemy" and may be good to play as you read the story.

Talk To The Stones

He was not religious, but he was in a very bad place. Everything was going wrong and he thought he could see only one way out.

Friends were supportive and helpful but he just felt he was a burden to them and they would be far better off if he were not there.

He was not suicidal but just didn't know what to do.

They all told him to talk to somebody, but nobody knew what his problems were, he would not burden them with that load. They were not him, so they would not understand.

One of his friends was a witch, she had a black cat and often forecast events with her various spells, cards and crystals. She tol him to go to the stone circle in the woods alone at midnight, well when it was dark, and "Talk To The Stones".

He asked her what she meant and she told him:

"They will not judge you, and as you unload what is weighing on you, you will feel unburdened and answers will reveal themselves to you. With people, they always have their own take, but talking to the stones allows you to formulate a way to find your road to finding how to deal with the weight on your shoulders. You don't have to do it, but if you do, you will be unburdened"

He wasn't sure, but he knew where the stones were.

He thought about it and then decided he would try it. He packed a small rucksack, a torch, a flask and some water and biscuits. He put on a warm Parka and set off.

It was going dark, and the stones were maybe twenty minutes walk.

The Stones

He got there and walked into the circle, The wind had been blowing with some light rain as he walked up, but in the circle it was quiet and calm. There was no wind, and no rain.

There was a tree stump which sufficed for a seat, so he sat down.

There was not a cloud in the sky, and he could see the stars.

There was no light pollution here.

He felt comforted and safe.

This was just him and the stones, there was no one else here.

He started to talk and to list his problems, one after another.

There was no echo, or answer but his heart and mind started to feel lighter.

He felt comforted.

He didn't know if this was coming for the sky, the earth or the stones.

It was like this place was a focus for calm and enlightenment.

His problems were unravelling as he talked about them and solutions began to manifest. He did not know whether the answers were coming from the spirit of this place, or from his own mind, which was becoming more receptive to the positive feeling of the the circle.

He was there most of the night, but then picked up his belongings, and left the circle and left all his troubles behind.

He felt like a new human being.

As a ROCK I am always listening; I am not a rolling stone although I was quite the stoner in the 70's.

  • It really does help when we talk about what's bothering us. It always makes us feel lighter. Loved your story!

A wonderful story of hope. You know stones really have a way in healing and other things. I used to collect stones that along the way seemed to call out to me. That was when I communed closer to nature,

I really like the way story shows that when life gets tough, it's okay to turn to nature for comfort. Talking about your problems, even to something like stones, can help you feel better and figure things out.
