The Dragon's Tale
“There weren't always dragons in the Valley, were there, Highness?” asked the Duke. The Queen sat back slightly in her chair, preparing herself for the same well-rehearsed performance she had seen so many times before, when the wine had been drunk, and the fire grew low. She folded her hands in her lap and looked down at them, waiting for the King to respond.

The Tales of The Waste Beyond
There weren't always dragons in the Valley. They had, however, been nesting in the Azure Mountains long before the first Parga and his people arrived from the Waste Beyond to settle the land. They barely paid any mind to the strangers, but watched with sleepy disinterest as a village struggled to rise beside the mossy bank of the Pale River.

Finding the Valley
There weren't always dragons in the Valley. In fact, there never were. At least, not in Prith’s lifetime, nor his grandparents’ lifetime, nor their grandparents’ lifetime. Prith had no idea, but the last time there were dragons in the Valley, his ancestors of fifty generations ago nearly died— along with everyone else on the continent. But because Prith did not know this, it was not on his mind. Instead, as he stood and looked out over the Valley, he gasped softly and shivered for reasons completely unrelated to any sense of impending peril.

Dragon Cast
"There weren't always dragons in the valley..." Baashur Dreadnaught read the teleprompter and stopped immediately. Just hearing himself read that out loud made him stop to think about the other dragons he left in the valley when he took this job 8 years ago.

Night of the Snowstorm
Tiny snowflakes drifted down quietly from the sky that evening. The man standing there, watching them, had been warned of blizzards that night, but this gentle snowfall seemed tame compared with what he had been imagining. Sam had just arrived to this land, travelling more than 4,000 miles to the west from his old home on another continent.

The Chronicles of Dayline
There weren't always Dragons in the Valley. At one time the city of Vigilia was a raucous social center at which one might encounter almost any folk of the realm, but now the entire settlement appeared as something from a waking nightmare. Luckily many of the inhabitants who had not tried to fight made it to shelter in the network of smaller caves and tunnels at the base of the mountain range to the east. It seemed all who thought to stand against the horde perished in a matter of moments. Some of those corpses that had not been eaten or defiled still stood in the streets, scorched beyond recognition as normal creatures. The great halls had burnt nearly to the foundations, some smoke still rose from the ruins of the temple district. The Priests and Magic-Users had spelled powerful protection over the buildings, but it did naught to save their skins. They fell with the rest, and resistance the magics offered to the dragon swarm's assault seemed to infuriate them and served only to ensure the totality of the destruction.

How To Be A Dragon: Prologue
There weren't always dragons in the Valley. What an odd code phrase. But that was what her mother had told her, and it was what she had left to go on. Her mother was gone. They'd both known she would be, and true enough, it had been sooner rather than later. Good thing they'd prepared a step-by-step plan for that unfortunate eventuality.
