The Red Splash
There weren’t always dragons in the Valley. No one knows why the Fire Splash came, but everyone was glad they did. Our village had spent three years running from the Dark Plumes before the new red dragons appeared. Before then, the Dark Plume attacks would come as the wind took them, and they would last for hours. The purple dragons would only leave when nothing was left to destroy or had their fill of people. I’ll never forget the day they got sis.

Where the river bends
There weren’t always dragons in the valley. Memories of Nan’s storytelling occupied her thoughts as Brenna reached beneath her knees to grasp a handful of sand. She brought the sodden clump to her nose and inhaled deeply, breathing in the scents of her home and feeling its coarseness slip between her fingers. Nan had always filled her head with tales of before, when the clan had lived free.

The Secret of the Valley
There weren't always dragons in the Valley. The Valley was a place that had become my haven and refuge. It had been my S.O.S.–a place of safety that gave me the opportunity to find security. When he brought me here, he said that the Valley would always supply what I needed. Since that time, I have come here many times. I came with every crisis, every uncertainty, every mistake, every hurt. Each time I came, I found exactly what I needed here. “So, why did the dragons come? Why would I need dragons?”

Dragons Within
There weren't always dragons in the valley. It was once a peaceful, pristine landscape of forest and meadow, old growth trees and wildflowers, leading down to the crystal-clear waters of the River Arneth, which meandered, lazily between the mountain ridges either side of Caronvale.

First formal contact
There wasn’t always a dragon in the valley. When he was around eight years old, Caleb’s family upped stumps and moved from the suburbs of Morphett Vale to the back corner of Tatachilla Estate, itself at the back end of McLaren Vale. Known locally just as The Vale, with The Flat the next town along, and where he knew the area since first days of primary school. He didn’t want to move, and right at that time was sad of leaving what came before. He’d feel this a number of times again, but not until he was an adult. In the middle, there was The Vale, which maintained the title of ‘home’ for him, even if some other places also came to hold the title as well in years to come.

The Blind Wanderers
“There weren’t always dragons in the valley,” I stated in a hushed tone. I held my daughter Ryne’s hand tightly in mine, pulling her along quickly. We maneuvered through streets and back alleys. This being her first time outside, she was doing great. She knew the rules of movement and stayed quiet until it was safe to respond. The sun had disappeared on the horizon about three or so hours ago, so we were in complete darkness. That was the best time to move without being noticed.

The Earth Shrine
In a land, far, far away, mountain tops glisten with snow in winter. In spring, the valleys shine bright green under the sun. Summer brings golden yellow light from the grasses of the wide open plains. In Fall, the lakes, ponds and rivers are alive with creatures as they prepare for the coming cold.

Melancholy of a Tyro Saviour
There weren’t always dragons in the Valley. He could recall it perfectly; the crystal clear image taking shape in his mind’s eye. The lush greens of the rolling hills, the mighty silverwood trees that hid the playful lives of the nymphs and shireland elves. He could remember stopping during a trek through these lands, feeling the trickles of sunlight dance upon his caramel skin as they cut through the treetops, casting his skin in an almost ethereal bronze glow.
