Facade of the Dragon
Flashback In my life, there was never peace. I always had to strive after some challenge, some fanciful dream that left me restless, aching to become more than the physical limitations set upon me. My list of accomplishments turned to dust in my eyes as I set my gaze upon higher pursuits.

The Death Assignment
Unbroken thunder rolled in the distance as heavy artillery continued to hammer defensive positions across the river in the eastern suburbs. Bethany watched the destruction from her family's fourth floor apartment, flinching with each major concussion. The adolescent brunette caught her dim, moist-eyed reflection gazing back at her as though from the blazing orange sky beyond the window. All of her most-loved places were being destroyed: her school, her favorite park, and the neighborhood just behind it, where her best friend lived. Used to live. Bethany couldn't bring herself to look toward that particular plume, the one that billowed upward from Eastwood Estates.

The Guardian

Edgard's Discovery
Edgard walked through the forest with a satisfied look on his face. It was early spring and a gorgeous day. The kind of day that was bright and fresh and had the smell of nature waking up after a long winter’s sleep. Being a dragon, Edgard’s senses were more focused – not only could he smell the leaves breaking down and the soil warming up but he could also smell creatures crawling through that soil, seeds bursting open with new life, sap running through the trees and in the distance, the faint smell of humans.

Verkis and the Foundling
Verkis flew with confidence through the skies. Sunlight glinted off polished, emerald scales. Claws of ivory scythed through the air and the lighter membranous skin of their wings cast an impressive shadow across the ground. Verkis loosed a bugling roar, and jets of emerald flame lanced through the sky. They had just earned their second naming, and felt great pride in their growing splendor. Verkis, they thought, much better than mere Ver.

Into the Meadow
Vaciella stood frozen at the edge of the forest, filled with fear, she was unable to force herself to step into the meadow. She looked down at her feet questioning their defiance, despite her demands to move forward they remained firm where they were. The tips of her toes teetered on the border between the shade of the trees and the bright blaze of the midday sun hitting the meadow.
