From Pet Shops Into Our Homes
When I was a boy, one thing I really loved was our fish tank that was kept in the corner of the living room. We had several different ones over the years but the one that sticks in my mind was the tall hexagonal tank. An aquarium can be a lot of work to keep maintained but for me it was like having a good friend. Just like a person it would change a lot over the years. I think I remember the red gravel was a constant feature of its various different setups. It matured from having stylized fancy bubblers to the type that were more dependable. This allowed it to reveal its true nature characterized by its assortment of fish.

Apparently, there was an aquarium near the Bermuda triangle. A tourist attraction, one I’d thought very little of even though I’d never heard of it before. The leaflet they had sent me gave me enough information to peg it as a tourist trap, though perhaps with a little more substance. It boasted a café with five-star service, near proximity to at least three ocean-view hotels, a wide range of the usual creatures you see in an aquarium, and the main selling point: an underwater tunnel that reached right into the Bermuda triangle itself, so you could impress your friends by saying you’d visited and survived.

“You know, they have three hearts, and their arms basically have a mind of their own. About two-thirds of their neurons reside in their arms. Oh, and their brain is donut-shaped, it’s wrapped around his esophagus.”

It all starts because there’s a certain Great White shark—small for its species and covered in thick, white scars—who has a disposition for mayhem. It bangs against the glass of the aquarium when visitors stop to ponder the aquarium life, or even as they pass. The shark seems to have an intuition about which guests have a more sensitive constitution, as it has a great track record of singling out which people will scream the loudest, which children will be so terrified that their parents will have a talk with the administrator about that “godawful beast.”

The Age of Progress dawned with smoke and fire. Things were changing in the cities and fields of the world; men and women toiled in hell-hot workshops filled with molten metal and flying cotton. Arabella Luton watched the changes with untrained eyes, but at the age of eight, she already understood that there was more than one world. There was the world of liquid metal where grey-faced men and women in drab clothes were free to do what they wanted, but lacked the money to do it... and the world she lived in, where money was no problem but freedom was in short supply. She lived like a doll, dressed and coiffed and plucked by her mother until she chafed, patted and petted by her father when it was suitable and ignored when it was not.

Death once told me that, in theory, the turritopsis dohrnii could live forever. “More commonly known as the immortal jellyfish,” he read out the information at the side of the tank, “They revert back to a juvenile stage known as a polyp. This is brought on by factors such as threats to their environment or old age, and allows them to repair damaged cells.”

The Montello Zoo & Aquarium, established by the Montello family, was state of the art, with all of the newest exhibits and equipment. It was large, and clean, and bright, and cheery. Well, it wasn’t particularly bright or cheery at the moment, as it was outside of normal operating hours, but that didn’t prevent two people from meeting up inside. They approached each other warily on a catwalk above a large exhibit full of exotic ocean creatures. The catwalk was only accessible to employees, which neither of them were, but neither of them particularly cared about that fact. One of them was six foot one, and white with a deep tan. He wore a leather duster, blue jeans, a black button down shirt, cowboy boots, and a cowboy hat, because he had decided that he enjoyed the old west aesthetic, and by God he was going to lean into it. The other man was a black man standing at five foot nine, with a shaved head, wearing a three piece silver suit, with a silver tie and a black shirt, and mirrored sunglasses.
