The Darkwoods
The Darkwoods By Samantha Harken It is said that there was a time before this one, an age where humans had wild devices and technology. They had metal wagons that flew through the sky, and some that floated along vast bodies of water so large the shore opposite could not be seen from the one a person stood on. These people had riches and entertainment beyond imagining and lived soft and comfortable lives. But everyone knew now that they must be stories; metal is too heavy to fly and it will sink if put into water. Such wild imaginings were from a time long before the gates of Jhorn were closed for good and there was no proof left now that they had ever been true.

The Red Solo Cup
The red cup was there, in the frayed wire over the bridge. The bridge on main and 6th used to be filled with red cups, spelling out “I love dad” or “Anna will you go to prom with me”. Today, the solo red cup meant something quite different. I had to be careful, seeing it was one thing; acting on it brought dire consequences.

A Connecticut Yankee in a Utah Rodeo
“Anyone want to ride the bull?” My family and I all looked at our tour guide as if he had asked us if we’d like to go swimming with sharks. He had to be kidding. This had to be his go-to joke when guiding yuppie tourists from New England. A way to make fun of us because it was clear this was our first time riding horses, let alone a bull. But he was serious. “Anyone can join the rodeo, you just gotta sign up at the pavilion, sign a few waivers, and since it's a competition we’ll even pay you five dollars for partaking.” He licked sweat from his dirty blonde mustache and leered at me through his cheap sunglasses.

The Life of a Ninja
I drew my katana from its place on my hip. It slid like butter from the sheath, flashing into the air like a flame. The armored men surrounding me leveled their spears in preparation for my next move. Silence hung eerily in the air. The heat of the night bore through my black suit, armor, hood, and mask, making me sweat more than I usually would. Luckily, my hands were gloved so I knew it wouldn’t affect my grip on the weapon’s handle. I twirled the blade, accustoming myself to its balance. I stared back into the eyes of my attackers, conveying my resolve. I saw fear, regret, and a hunger for violence. I could taste my imminent victory.

Big Bad Wolf
Sometimes it pays to be overly paranoid, at least in my case it did. I surveyed the area again carefully for any danger. Ever since I was little, I was obsessed with worlds other than my own. Far off planets and magical realms where mythical beasts roamed free. I never thought that one day those fantasies would actually come true.

A TALE TAIL HEART tale no.2
Freyja couldn’t figure out how she had been caught, but she knew that Bogran must have flipped on her the second her locket started burning inside her chest. It wasn’t just the normal soul-sucking sensation, it felt like her sternum was being ripped inward as the wicked thing took sinew and bone with it. It damned near felt like it would take the earth beneath her feet if she stood still for too long. Worse than that, the one installed in Delphi was starting to send jolts and her little neck was red. She could hardly breathe. Those massive fucking assholes. Big gaping pile-stricken taint pustules… enough.
