She walked into the dimly lit bar and scanned the room for him. Her heart skipped a beat when she saw him sitting in a corner, nursing a drink. She made her way towards him, feeling her nerves build up.
As she got closer, she could see the sadness in his eyes. "I'm sorry," he whispered as she sat down beside him.
She knew what he was going to say before he even said it. They had tried to make it work, but it just wasn't meant to be. She took his hand in hers, feeling tears prick at the corners of her eyes.
They sat in silence for a few minutes, the weight of their decision heavy on their shoulders. But then, a smile slowly spread across his face. "You know," he said, "we may not have worked out, but I'm grateful for the time we had together."
And with those words, the sadness in his eyes lifted, and they both knew they would be okay.
