John stared as Stevie’s car drove down the street, tightening his stomach into a knot. He knew he had been careless. The coffee cup being left, ice filled in blood –these were errors committed by novices and should not have been made by him. Steve’s suspicion was real; there was something that could be seen in the air: why the delay?

He gulped the remaining coffee that was lukewarm; the sweetness of this drink lingered on his tongue. He saw his picture hanging on the wall over the fireplace; every time it reminded him of his brother’s innocent face with clean-shaven cheeks for life he abandoned a long time ago. Being a man who swore to fight against all kinds of injustices John had turned out to be wrong and now he was working as a double agent among police officers whose allegiance is just as split as the city they live in.

He was brought back to reality by the sound of the telephone ringing. The captain’s voice had some suspicion in it. “John, there have been traces of cocaine under your nails as shown by forensic tests clarify.”

His mind went into overwork state. Not all of it could be denied but not the whole thing either. “Look sir, I… I saw that bag during the fight. I assumed it was sweetener and therefore panicked before throwing it away.” As flimsy as it appeared, this was his only defense.

The pause from the captain was deafening. Finally he spoke up in a clipped tone. “John, come down to the station. We need to talk.”

A cold dread filled him and he hung up the phone. He knew his career was at stake; his life too for that matter. His brother’s eyes seemed like they were staring right into him again, so he quickly checked out the picture once more - just for verification purposes. John suddenly felt heavy with the weight of the badge in his pocket, grabbed his jacket and put it on. He headed towards what looked like a lion’s den: would he walk out as a cop or a criminal?

Fantastic episode and really moved the action along. You will see from the next episode that you also correctly anticipated a meeting with the Captain (in this case a telephone conversation) although the meeting has yet to take place so I am saying nothing further at this stage. This is in any way a correct guess so would like to send you $5 as our first winner. Well done, and I have linked the story and mentioned your win in episode 7. Can't see a tip link on your page tho?
