Alice shuffled her feet over the edge of the bed, placing them carefully on the floor. Wearily, she lifted her shoulders and straightened up. Reaching for her cane, she gently eased herself from the bed.

There were noises coming from father’s study. He never worked this late.

Alice limped along the cold stones of the hall. She stopped outside the study door.

A thin crack of light showed through. She was about to push it open when she heard something that made her freeze.

“Please…. Let me go…. Let me go…”

“I’m sorry my dear, but I can’t.”
