Sketch by the author after Poussin's Et in Arcadia Ego

GLOBAL COOLING slowly extends towards a series of ice-ages in the wingspan of these epochs while APES arise and diversify; Grasslands extend Islands in the ocean clearing of primordial forest at first setting for camps for forests in extent dwindling in some extent to great wide opens (limited at every wooded edge, where that limit isn’t sea or mountain. Deifying the Science Myth: advertised as an Eden Age when Flora and Fauna become recognizably Modern. The Idyll’s stage was set then though in archaic creature forms long before any leader would bring his beasts to pasture and the dogs operated in brigand bands without any human head to organize their genes

Although our ancestral apes

to herd them

maybe already vaguely planning their takeover.

It was an accident

Although all in all it was still a warm and temperate time this Miocene age—the global cooling marching by imperceptible gradation and unperceived thru the generations who forgot to measure subtle occurrence in migration maelstroms: Ice-Age unsuspected. Predatory behavior of Dogs to be shaped still later into its seeming reversal in Guardian behavior. To head, to heel, to back, are all in hunting craft of the wolf-pack, reassigned through reinforcements into a controlled placement shaping, contouring, and moving of the flock by merged human/dog sheep-craft in unison the fusion of species in order by which we make a single support the totem-pole trunk going forth by mount and vale, the expansion of the Herdsmen.

I am not a quadruped

Herds themselves and their being nipped and heeled by predatory designs deemed the danger of the grassland forage;

always remember—

Pan himself was our inheritance,

biped Billy-goat upright

on his hooved (we differ on this)

and manly shape of hairy legs,

lover of fleeing and mainly

non-consenting nymphs

forest paths and meadow males

on the scent-trails by light of

foliate lunacy re-enacting

the sacrament of Phoebus and Daphne

on the banks of some unnamed river.

Form of the Rose

Form of the Sword

My Bucolica is a modern reboot of the "eclogue" form originating in Classical Greece and Rome and much rehashed throughout all European literature. It usually comes in the form of a collection of shepherd's songs, dialogues, and stories featuring themes of love/desire, nature/the seasons, death/mortality, and the passing of time. It is often a playground to poeticize the animal world and humankind's relation to it, as well as particulars of the seemingly idyllic life led by simple shepherds and farmers in Arcadia. It is also referred to as bucolic literature. I wrote my Bucolica 2017-2018 in a mix of poetry and prose.
