Finding her

When Magic came to earth

There we sat on the couch, knowing we were watching history unfold. I don’t mean good history either, like landing on the moon. This was bad, like waking up to find out covid shut everything down. As the news anchor talked, I sat there with my best friend Ryan on his worn-out brown leather couch. The top of the screen reads: A new race has been detected on Earth. When this was on social media, it was one of those things that felt like it would just randomly disappear once people got bored.

I mean, I even made popcorn before we decided to turn on the news. We were not really news people; we kept up with current events and stayed present, but this was the first time we had ever intentionally watched the news.

Tonight, they talked about a new-age witch hunt. As they took to the streets asking for people’s opinions on this matter. The response was all over the place. Some people wanted them to disappear, and others said they had been here for a while; just let them be. After a while, I think we were both ready to change the channel until one person asked the important question. “what is the threat? What can they do that we can’t?” the news anchor looked excited as though all her research had not been wasted.

She smiles. “I am so happy you asked; they look just like us; however, there are reports of people feeling as though they are being called to them. Some report that they felt they were responsible for the being.”

This got Ryan’s attention, which in return got mine since he had no desire to watch tonight. He sat up straighter as the news reporter went on. “They seem innocent and wise at the same time.”

The older woman on the screen looked bored since her question had yet to be answered. “I understand that they seem enchanting, but what is so special about them.”

“Some do not know they have any special power and lead people into compromising situations. The biggest threat, however, is the ones who are aware of their powers. They can lead you into whatever they desire with a smile. These beings are told to be a mixture of vampires and witches. They bend anything to their will, even the people they claim to be loved ones. Most claim it is simply just the way.”

The women thought for a moment. I noticed Ryan now fidgeting with his hands like he used to do when we had to make quick decisions. “So, they basically are magical beings with random power completely unconnected from who they are.”

The news reporter loved where this was going, and it was evident as she smiled even bigger, and you could almost feel the energy she had. “Exactly! Most of them who realize who they are report feeling lost. They are grateful for those who claim them, as they say. The ones who feel responsible for them are usually the ones who help them realize who they are. These beings are spirits with a childlike feel. They are new to this world and act as such even if they do not act as such.”

With that, I understood Ryan’s tension. I felt the same way. My stomach turned as I went through the contacts in my phone while he was running to his room after mumbling something about having to get out of there.

No words were needed. We both had the same person in my mind. I thought of her laugh and curiosity for just about anything, like a kitten leaving her mother’s side for the first time. She would often just hug us, saying how grateful she was. Ryan would always tell her to get her head out of LaLa land. I thought of all the random walks through the forest and all of the camping. My heart was always filled with love and joy when I was with her.

We knew at that very moment we had to get Kimmy before anyone else. We had to keep her safe because she chose us.
