Finding her
There we sat on the couch, knowing we were watching history unfold. I don’t mean good history either, like landing on the moon. This was bad, like waking up to find out covid shut everything down. As the news anchor talked, I sat there with my best friend Ryan on his worn-out brown leather couch. The top of the screen reads: A new race has been detected on Earth. When this was on social media, it was one of those things that felt like it would just randomly disappear once people got bored.

Debbie
I loved this little lounge bar, feeling truly at peace sitting at the bar with my best friend Debbie. She had a smile on her face however I could see the pain behind it as she looked at the picture hanging up behind us. It was her mother; she was a singer here and this place was where she went when life just didn’t feel right for her. The bartender smiled he was always there for her but today they both looked a little nervous. I’ve never known this man to frown or show any signs of discontent. His thick black hair slightly swept to his face just above his right eye almost covering the bright brown eyes.

A stronger writer
Writing has become a part of me, having a journal in my bag is something that is just common knowledge about me. The first time I wrote, and I mean really sat down with my blue and white summer themed stationery my grandmother gave me in order to send her letters, I remember feeling pressure of having the right words. I was so worried that I would spell something wrong, or not have the proper grammar because I mean this was my grandmother we were talking about, the queen of etiquette!

Running in the dark with excitement, love, and joy! Looking over, there he was, enjoying the night air with me. Out here, there are no worries about whom we are engaged to or what happens when we outlive them. Out here he is staring at me the way he tries his hardest to look at her and here I am just enjoying being able to speak freely.

When you left
Naïve, anxiety ridden, so scared of the world and unable to hold my head up. That’s how you met me. You gave me the confidence to explore, learn, and, most importantly, look up and take it all head-on. You slowly faded away, taking away all the lessons that you taught. Leaving me to relearn how to hold my head up high, to walk straight to what I want knowing you won’t be there to catch me this time.
