Dream Doctors

A short story on decay.

By Ezra I. JamesPublished 2 years ago 3 min read

There are distant rumors among the strange lands of this world concerning doctors out in the open with the distinct ability of triggering dreams. Practitioners of this technique are known for their intense knowledge of hypnosis and hallucinogens. It is believed that through shamble meditation and constant drug use, their minds develop a mysterious 6th sense, the one scientists for centuries have been trying to uncover.

Urban legends have spread about their dealings. It is said that they’re some sort of secret mafia, whose responsibility lies in appeasing the interest of certain drug lords on the Western hemisphere. Their status in any society carry the burden of being dangerous, chaotic, and evil. For the first time in recorded history, a monumental effort has been initiated by several countries to stop these acts that are consider by many to be of inhumane and supernatural nature. The effects of regulations have done little to deteriorate the practice. The dream doctors are always one step ahead.

In my experiences, all indicators point towards the dream doctors being the blind anchor of the whole drug trade. Their influence spreads throughout every form of social routine. Every heard the ‘ol saying “I know a guy who knows a guy”? Well, the dream doctor is that guy. Near every city and every college they can be found hiding under the impressions of psychologists. Their presence is always felt with a smell of rotting flesh in the air.

The beauty about addiction is how slowly the body administers the needed boost to let go of fear and just exclaim “fuck it” when on the verge of curiosity or relapse. Dream doctors follow up this natural process by subliminally enforcing key words and hidden messages to certain everyday objects for the patient to one day feel the need for pot, H, and speed. To cover their tracks, they administer a form of cognitive dissonance in their victim by way of forcing them to hide such addiction from conscious thought.

Just how exactly they perform these acts of enslavement is unknown. An old acquaintance of mine, the first to have ever told me of these hidden tools, recalled once that the best way to describe this process is by imagining a parasitic worm latching onto the frontal lobe of the brain, and upon contact immediately releases a chemical substance that relaxes the bones, shuts down any form of free will, and turns the entire matter of neurons and tissue into a zombie-like state. They start off the process by smoothing the brain to functionally remember images of graphical and sexual nature, beginning with extreme taboos, followed by hollowed echoes of burning flesh. It’s a smooth procedure, as graceful and meticulous as the work of tailors, watchmen, jewelers, etc. The only difference being their work ends up causing a thousand-dollar-a-year addiction.

For years they were an unknown entity to my knowledge. As I became more in-tuned with the regime and accepted my fate, looser lips showed me the truth. First came the stories of the common junkie, then the whole business side of the scheme, the stories behind the origin of every cartel, and finally the marketing strategies used on such an enterprise.

The dream doctors are their most efficient form to make business of any kind. They rarely leave a psychological trace in their victims, and their efficiency is as good as the pure meth of certain dispensaries in New Mexico. For all I know, the FBI and the DEA don’t even know they exist, and the only possible way of them getting a hold of any man who knows any sort of information regarding these doctors is near the tipping scale of impossibility. And to further push their secrecy into an abyss, dream doctors have a direct order from every cartel in the world that if they ever get caught, they must drop dead on the spot. Drastic measures for a drastic career choice.

I can’t speak for them, but a fella who finds comfort in such activities has always struck me as odd. What kind of creature gives up his humanity to find comfort in the pain of others? They know the simple truth of illusion, that the only way to end the world is to expose its content as nothing more than a vain illusion. It’s been intellectual’s best kept secret, the one thing that consumes them into forces of freedom or control. The dream doctors exist as a gateway to freedom through control, the most paradoxical task of the modern man. Their existence is a mere exercise of proving a point. There’s no underlying narrative to it. They exist because they were conceived. It is evidence of nothing more than our own nature. They are the enemies of modern times, the ones that offer a lending hand in exchange for your soul.
