There weren't always dragons in the valley.

Eighteen years ago, the first rift appeared over the middle of three of the main clan lands in Kaan. Rifts are a tear between our world and the dark world. Dark forces and demons came forth from the rift, chaos and mayhem swept across the lands. The initial wave brought terrifying demons of all sizes, leaving a destructive path through the cities, destroying buildings and killing people by the dozens. The clans worked quickly to band together and amass a big army with the best warriors from each clan. The army fought back, decimating some of the smaller demons, with some fleeing back through the rift, cities were saved. However, with no way to close the rift they kept coming. The army was split into smaller groups to cover more ground and attack at different angles. The clans sent word to their outer neighbours, warning them of what was happening and to prepare. This raged on for months, the army pushing the demons back, only to find more appeared somewhere else, many died and some cities fell, unable to recover from the incredible loss.

On a scheduled hunt near the valley, a team of warriors stumbled upon dragons. Massive scaled, winged beasts, with long necks, four powerful legs and long tails. Some with spikes along their back and on the end of their tail, while others had flames or ice, some covered in shadows or glowed. Although huge and with their definite advantages to the humans, there were only fifteen dragons, no match for the hundreds of warriors the army had. The warriors left quietly to return to base and converge with the rest of the army. When the full army was amassed, they marched to the dragon’s camp. In the day it took the army to gather the dragons had multiplied, there were now more than a hundred dragons. The warriors didn’t want to take the chance of missing this opportunity, if they could go from fifteen to a hundred in a day, there could be thousands in the time it would take for the clans to gather their neighbours. There would then be no hope, they wouldn’t be a match for these massive beasts.

With their heads held high, they marched into the valley with their swords drawn, some warriors pushed their way to the front, eager to see the dragons up close. The dragons came to attention and the sight of the army and slowly headed for the army. The warriors prepared for the dragons’ attack when the strangest thing happened. The warriors that had pushed their way to the front, fell to their knees and put their heads to the earth in prayer, each dragon halted before a warrior, lowering their heads in a bow and put their snouts to the warriors' heads. The rest of the warriors were so shocked to see this odd display that they halted their impeding attack to watch on in awe. The dragons chuffed then raised their heads to the sky and roared. The warriors stood, placing their hands on either side of their massive dragon's head and looked deep in their eyes, both sets of eyes glowed the colour of the dragon's eyes. Leaving the warrior’s eyes the same colour as their dragon’s. The dragon blessed warriors turned to their fellow warriors saying the dragons would not harm them. The dragons and warriors created a bond, they were bound together by spirit and soul. Once bonded a telepathic link was created between the bonded pair, they could communicate at great distances and feel each other's emotions. The first dragon to bond to a warrior was Seeto, he is the dragon king and explained to the warriors they were there to help the humans fight back against the demons the rift brought and protect their world. Through the rift the dragons felt the call to this world, the king brought some of his best warriors from his world, Aurora, to travel to Kaan and help. Dragons are amazing creatures that can bond with other species to increase each other’s abilities.

The clans believe that the dragons came from the heavens, a saving grace to help defend against the rift. With the help of the dragon warriors, the clans were able to protect the cities and people from the nightmares that venture through the rift. In eighteen years, there hasn’t been any success of closing the rifts. A couple smaller rifts appeared within the outer clans’ lands and dragons set up smaller colonies there to help protect the cities.

Each year in Spring a hundred more dragons appear, all sixteen clans gather in the valley to celebrate their arrival and a bonding ceremony takes place to hopefully discover more bonds. Every fit and abled person between eighteen and fifty are encouraged to attend.

This year, I'll be in attendance.
