EXT. NIGHT - CHASE'S DREAM - DOWNTOWN CITY
CHASE is walking down the street with STRANGER 1, STRANGER 2, and STRANGER 3. Around them are blown up areas and a few building with smoke come out of them. A person runs by them and heads up the street. They continue down the sidewalk, smoking a joint as they do. An explosion goes off to the side far right of them. They each look over.
STRANGER 3
Well that was loud.
STRANGER 1, STRANGER 2, and STRANGER 3 go back to walking. CHASE shrugs and continues walking over with them.
CHASE
How long has this been going on?
STRANGER 2
Almost for a whole year.
STRANGER 3
It's an overdramatic world we live in, Chase. Worlds coming to an end.
They walk up to a 7/11. Someone runs by again, going up a hill that's behind the store this time. CHASE, STRANGER 1, STRANGER 2, and STRANGER 3 each walk into the store. They walk along, grabbing items along the way.
STRANGER 2
I feel like it's times like this that people really start turning to religion. That's what I did at least. Started praying more.
CHASE
How'd you know who you were going to pray to?
STRANGER 2
Well I mean, I grew up religious so I went back to Judaism. We're all pretty religious actually. Just each different religions.
STRANGER 1
Yeah, I'm at one with my Buddhism
STRANGER 3
I actually just stick with Paganism.
They each continue walking down the store lanes.
CHASE
How do you feel with you each having different religions?
STRANGER 3
Insightful. Like as if we're continuously both learning and sharing our knowledge upon the religion and letting each other know, while also not putting pressure to join.
Another bomb goes off outside the building, sending everything to gently fly up in the air and then back down.
STRANGER 1
Smoking the weed makes it easier. Calms the body. The more you smoke the easier it gets to just walk past all the explosions. Easier and easier.
CHASE
You said easier a lot.
STRANGER 1 rolls their eyes at CHASE. CHASE shrugs.
CHASE
Sounds like the American way of reacting to things. Very typical of us.
STRANGER 3
You never know what to expect with the American way, other than a lot drama.
STRANGER 1
Well, Hollywood and Broadway doesn't exist for nothing. You always need a little drama.
STRANGER 2
That's what you have to go with. Just stick with the positive even if there is just little drama and big terrors surrounding us.
CHASE
Can we go back to talking about religion?
STRANGER 2
Yeah, what's your question?
CHASE
Well, both my friends are each believe different religions but I've never really been able to put my foot down on one. Could you tell me a bit about each of yours.
STRANGER 2
Sure.
STRANGER 3
I'll start. Mine's Paganism. Well as you know, Paganism concentrates on specific practices such as ecology, witchcraft, Celtic traditions or certain gods. Many other religions see us as evil but that's not the truth. Or our perception at least. Specifically during The Witchcraft Trials back in the late late 1600s. And then there's Merlin. Merlin was described by others as-
STRANGER 3 puts their hands up as expression and pretends to be a different person, deepening their voice.
STRANGER 3
The old man, which represents knowledge, reflection, insight, wisdom, cleverness, and intuition on the one hand, and on the other, moral qualities such as good will and readiness to help, which make his “spiritual” character sufficiently plain.
CHASE
Wow.
STRANGER 3
Right. He's a mythical figure. He's prominently brought up in the legend of King Arthur and as a magician, along with many other roles. Merlin's traditional known as an often-mad cambion, born of a mortal woman and an incubus, from whom he inherits his supernatural powers and abilities.
CHASE
Supernatural?
STRANGER 1
Like who a cat talks to.
CHASE
Who a cat talks to?
STRANGER 3
Yeah. So Merlins most notable abilities commonly include prophecies and shapeshifting. Merlin matures to an ascendant sagehood and engineers the birth of Arthur through magic and intrigue.
CHASE
How did you figure this all out before you decided to join the religion.
STRANGER 3
I started with the web at first but I also had a few friends involved in Paganism. They added on to what I learned online. Continuing on though, later stories have Merlin as an advisor and mentor to the young king until his disappearance, leaving behind a series of prophecies foretelling the events yet to come. A popular version from the French prose cycles tells of Merlin being bewitched and forever sealed up or killed by his student, one of the many the Ladies of the Lake after falling in love with her.
CHASE
Do you think she killed him?
STRANGER 3
Probably. Crazy bitches will be crazy bitches.
INT. MORNING - CHASES BEDROOM
CHASE wakes up from his dream. He takes out his notebook and writes down Paganism, Judaism, and Buddhism.
CHASE
Such different religions.
CHASE gets up from his bed and turn on his music.
DIRTY LAUNDRY BY DON HENLEY STARTS PLAYING
CHASE suddenly has a vision and sees in front of him BLONDE MILITARY MAN and multiple other male members of the military, in the uniforms.
BLONDE MILITARY MAN
You ready for it?
The other military men laugh.
MILITARY MEN
Are you ready for it?
CHASE comes back to reality.
CHASE
Am I though?
CHASE continues getting ready for his day with HARPER.
DIRTY LAUNDRY BY DON HENLEY FADES AWAY
EXT. AFTERNOON - OUTSIDE HARPERS HOUSE
DIRTY LAUNDY BY DON HENLEY CONTINUES PLAYING
CHASE drives down the street in ARMANIS car. He turns right, onto a different street, that leads him into a trailer park. CHASE pulls up to HARPERS house. CHASE parks the car and gets out. He locks the door, then looks at the trailer. The front door opens and HARPER steps outside. HARPER waves to CHASE.
HARPER
Hey there!
CHASE
Hey.
CHASE waves back to HARPER.
HARPER
You can come on in.
HARPER motions for CHASE to follow her into the house. CHASE walks up the steps and heads into HARPERS house. CHASE looks around at HARPERS walls. They're covered in posters of circus performers, with white paint behind it.
HARPER
Follow me.
CHASE follows HARPER to a door at the back of her trailer. HARPER opens the door and they both go inside. Two lamps dimly light up the room. It has tapestries on the walls and pink pillows in a circle on the floor. HARPER takes a seat and pats the pillow next to her.
HARPER
Come take a seat.
CHASE takes a seat on one of the pillows next to HARPER. HARPER takes out a wood box. She opens it up. Inside are a bunch of rocks.
CHASE
Why do you have a box of rocks?
HARPER
It's my stones I use when reading people. I keep hold of specific ones when working at the circus. I go based on the performance I'm giving for the day or the people I'm reading for.
HARPER pulled out a brown stone with calligraphy designs on it.
HARPER
I feel that this is the best match for you, in this time and place. Here.
HARPER hands the stone to CHASE. CHASE observes the designs on the stone.
HARPER
It's the Calligraphy Script Jasper. It accesses higher knowledge and guidance, manifestation of dreams, and creativity. When you're seeking out its use for energy it brings joy and positive energy, as well as instills optimism and strength to keep moving forward and not getting stuck in the past.
CHASE
Okay.
HARPER
It's a travel stone too, so using it today may help you get somewhere new soon.
CHASE
This is already all pretty new so far so...
HARPER laughs.
HARPER
Yes, that is true. Now here's another one I thought I could use for a better reading.
HARPER pulls out a green stone, in the shape of a traingle.
HARPER
This is a Unakite Jasper. It's meant to be used today to help assist in the releasing of negative patters and the old emotional wounds we hold in our bodies. It supports balance and teaches us patience in the process.
CHASE grabs hold of the green triangular stone.
CHASE
Why do I need this one as well?
HARPER looks down at the ground ashamed.
HARPER
I'll admit, when I did your reading at the circus I saw how you were getting messages but also hallucinations at the same time. Like voices. It seemed that you were holding onto the past of what the voices you were hearing were telling you.
CHASES face goes red, thinking about the new voices he's recently started hearing.
ELLYSE
Keep your mouth shut Chase!
CHASE jumps.
HARPER
Oh no. Is it starting now?
CHASE
Umm...
CHASES face goes red in embarrassment.
CHASE
No. I just got jumped at the thought of you reading my mind again.
HARPER looks down at the ground in shame.
HARPER
About that...
CHASE looks down too, remembering the dream he had about HARPER.
HARPER
Why were you getting vision dreams of my past?
CHASES eyes go wide.
CHASE
That's a true story?
HARPER
Yes... That's one of the reasons I thought we'd need two stones today instead of one. It just seemed peculiar how you have honest visions as well as hallucinations. Do they intertwine at all?
CHASE takes notice to how HARPER changed the subject.
CHASE
Umm...
CHASE looks around but there's no sign of any images or voices.
CHASE
Sometimes. You've been the main one so far. There was this time though that I got a panic attack and had visions.
HARPER
Oh no, the panic attack ones. What did you see?
CHASE
I saw a woman that looked like she was in danger. She seemed intoxicated and unable to comprehend what was going on around her. And then there's another.
CHASE shivers thinking back on the woman in the cold room singing to herself.
HARPER
Yeah?
CHASE
She was freezing and in a room, that seemed like it was underground. She was holding onto her legs and humming to herself.
CHASE pulls his legs in and gives HARPER an example.
HARPER
What did she look like?
CHASE
I don't remember her face clearly. Not like I did with yours and-
CHASE goes silent, almost bringing up ELLYSE and ASHTON.
HARPER
And?
CHASE
Nothing. Sorry, I got confused with the voices over the visions.
HARPER
You've run into people that match the voices?
CHASE
Um... I mean once. But it's a story for another time.
CHASE quickly changes the subject by picking the brown calligraphy stone back up again.
CHASE
So what's the reading you wanted to do today?
HARPER smiles big in excitement.
HARPER
I wanted to try to jump to a different dimension together and maybe travel through.
I've done it many times before, so I won't drag you into anything of mine, but maybe now that you've mentioned it, we could try to enter one of yours and find that woman together.
CHASE
Jump to different dimensions together? Okay. I mean.
CHACE becomes nervous.
CHASE
I've never tried it with someone before.
HARPER
Don't worry. I have experience. Just let me do the talking. Just close your eyes and try to meditate. I'll do the talking.
CHASE
Okay.
CHASE closes his eyes. HARPER starts making a gentle sound in the air.
HARPER
Hummm...
As CHASES eyes are closed he starts dozing off. CHASE falls asleep.
EXT. DAY - CHASES DREAM STATE
CHASE opens his eyes. He is laying in the middle of a grassy field. Laying down next to him on the grass is HARPER. CHASE looks to his left and sees a light blue house, with a cop car parked in the driveway. The roads are silent, no cars going up or down them. HARPER wakes up and sits up.
HARPER
Woah. Where are we?
CHASE
I don't know. I can't tell if this is any bit familiar to me at all. It feels as if it is, but I can't put my finger fully down on the pin to point out the memory as to where I know this place from.
HARPER
The license plate reads, New Hampshire.
HARPER stands up. CHASE watches her as she does and then follows in repetition. They start walking towards the house. As they do suddenly lightning strikes throughout the sky, followed by a loud clap of thunder.
CHASE
Woah.
HARPER
What's going on?
The clouds move quickly and the world around them starts to warp, visually.
WICKED ONES BY DOROTHY STARTS PLAYING.
Suddenly they're in the middle of the woods. A big cabin sits in front of them. CHASE gets a vision and sees a light blue car driving up, with two people inside the front, only showing the outline of their faces and hair. The car drives along to the music.
CHASE
There's someone coming.
HARPER
Yeah. I see her right there.
HARPER points to the cabin, where a YOUNG WOMAN is climbing out one of the windows on the side of the building.
HARPER
Hello!?
HARPER waves at THE YOUNG WOMAN. THE YOUNG WOMAN doesn't react to HARPER but instead falls down to the ground, with a big box in her hands. YOUNG WOMAN stands up, holding the box close to her body, and starts running forward, diagonally from the cabin.
HARPER
I wonder what's in that box. I'm going to follow her!
CHASE
Wait!
HARPER starts running, following THE YOUNG WOMAN. CHASE starts running after her.
ELLYSE
(In a fake British accent.)
Don't get lost!
CHASE suddenly stops running after HARPER.
ELLYSE
Harper always gets lost. Did she tell you the story yet? Of how she ended up joining the circus to begin with?
HARPER
Chase!?
CHASE looks up from the ground but doesn't see HARPER anywhere.
HARPER
Chase!?
CHASE
Harper!?
HARPER comes running back, in CHASES direction.
HARPER
She ran so fast. I couldn't keep up with her. Did you see that box she had in her arms? It looked blue.
Behind them the light blue car pulls up. CHASE and HARPER turn around. As they do everything starts to fade.
INT. AFTERNOON - INSIDE HARPERS HOUSE
CHASE opens his eyes and he's back in HARPERS room, sitting down on a pillow with his legs crossed. Next to him, HARPER stands picks up her stones and places them back in her little bag.
CHASE
What was that?
HARPER
Danger. That's what it looked like.
CHASE
You remember it all?
HARPER
Of course. We teleported together.
CHASE sits in silence for a second, bewildered.
CHASE
How is this possible though? To teleport together.
HARPER
It's like me entering your dreams, only instead your dreams have visions with them.
CHASE
Do you have to use magic?
HARPER looks over at CHASE with a small smile.
HARPER
Of course I used magic.
CHASE
Wicked.
WICKED ONES BY DOROTHY PLAYS FOR A FADE AWAY.
INT. NIGHT - CHASES ROOM
CHASE sits on his bed. He has the papers from all the reports of missing people out again. CHASE smokes a cigarette and starts arranging different piles. He does it by age, and then the timing of them going missing. CHASE has Missing People pinned on his wall. He starts pinning up each of the missing people posters, in the order that he had piled them. Once he is done CHASE still has a few posters left.
CHASE
Runaways.
He crumbles them up, and throws it at the trash basket by his door. As he does ARMANI opens the door. The ball of paper hits ARMANI in the face.
ARMANI
What the fuck?
CHASE
Oh shit. Sorry. Wrong timing.
ARMANI
What is this?
ARMANI walks into CHASES room and looks at the missing people papers on his wall.
CHASE
After going over to Harpers today and having the visions, I thought I'd look into it some more.
ARMANI
This is all the missing people ones.
CHASE
I know. I still have murder.
ARMANI
Do you know who was in the car?
CHASE
No, but I know it was two men at least and the way the car looked.
ARMANI
A lot of cars are going to look like this one though, Chase.
ASHTON
Listen to your friend, Chase. Seems kind of like a waste of time to me, don't you think?
CHASE
I want Kayla and Devin back.
ARMANI
Wait! Did you just say you weren't hearing voices anymore? Wait...
CHASE looks at ARMANI irritated.
CHASE
You thought this was all just my delusions again, didn't you?
ARMANI
No, Chase. It's just sometimes the delusional thinking can still play a part either way. But you said you weren't hearing Devin or Kayla anymore?
CHASE looks at the ground, still irritated.
CHASE
No. I'm hearing different people.
ARMANI
Oh.
ARMANI sits down on CHASES bed.
ARMANI
So the voices are still there?
CHASE
They always will be. Or from what I know of it, at least.
ARMANI
What are the new voices saying?
JACK
Run!
CHASE looks out his door, towards the direction JACKS voice came from.
CHASE
What the fuck, Jack?
JACK peaks his head into the room.
JACK
It's a quote from this new thriller movie on Netflix. Do you guys want to watch it?
ARMANI
No, Jack! Can you fuck off for a second, please?
JACK puts his hands up in defense and leaves the room.
CHASE
The new voices always do that too.
ARMANI
Do what?
CHASE
Quote things. As if they're giving off hints at times. But what am I to know. It could simply just be another delusion.
CHASE looks away from ARMANI.
ARMANI
Chase, I'm sorry. I'm just looking out.
CHASE
Whatever.
CHASE shrugs.
ARMANI
Okay. Well, would you be cool maybe talking this over again another time? Maybe we can look into these cases together too.
CHASE shrugs again. CHASE looks up and sees ARMANI staring at him with concerned eyes. CHASE does a fake half smile and nods his head. ARMANI nods his head back and walks out of CHASES room, closing the door behind him.
JACK
Run!
ARMANI
Shut the fuck up.
CHASE relights his cigarettes and takes a few hits off the last bit. He looks over the posters as he does. Once he's finished he puts out his cigarette and turns off his light. CHASE lays down in his bed, closing his eyes. CHASE starts to fall asleep.
ASHTON
Chase?
ELLYSE
Not so fast sweetheart.
Suddenly before CHASES eyes there's the officer.
ELLYSE
There's something we need to talk about.
The officer winks at CHASE.
