Chase's Chase - Episode 1

EXT. OUTSIDE - DAY - A BIG GRASSY HILL

CHASE is out in a big field, up high on a hill. He looks around himself in wonder.

SUDDENLY MUSIC PLAYS

He walks to his right when suddenly a big giant steps down front of him, making a dent in the ground. He steps back.

CHASE

Woah.

CHASE looks down. Before him suddenly like a keypad a red bridge starts appearing, connecting the two hills of land.

CHASE

What the?

Heat starts coming up from the space between the two newly formed hills. A deep laugh comes from below.

DEVIL

You've entered my game.

INT. INSIDE - MORNING - IN CHASES BEDROOM

An alarm starts going off. CHASE hits it and turns it off.

ZOOM IN

CHASE has his face smooshed into his pillow on his bed.

CHASE

Shit.

CHASE gets up out of bed and gets ready.

KAYLA

Good morning sunshine.

LO/HI BY THE BLACK KEYS STARTS PLAYING

CHASE puts on his clothes and brushes his teeth. He quickly fixes his hair in the mirror, adding in a little volume. He heads downstairs to Armani and Jack, his roommates.

JACK

Good morning shit face.

ARMANI

Now how is our Chase doing so far today?

ARMANI puts his phone down and picks up his coffee while looking over at CHASE. ARMANI takes a big drink and raises his eyebrows.

CHASE

I had another crazy dream.

ARMANI

Did it match up with the voices?

CHASE rolls his eyes at ARMANI

CHASE

No. It was about a bridge.

JACK

Please don't go on and on about a stupid fucking bridge to us.

JACK takes a shot of vodka after.

ARMANI

You're drinking this early again. I only go for weed bud. You've gotta chill it out.

CHASE takes a swig off of the vodka.

CHASE

I disagree.

JACK

So I'm saying today we all call out of work actually. It's not going to damage the big ass airport. Plus neither of you have classes today so that's a bonus.

ARMANI

I do have a test tomorrow though.

CHASE

I actually do too.

JACK

Which you'll both have time to study for tonight since we're hanging during the day.

ARMANI nods his head at JACK and looks over at CHASE. JACK looks over at CHASE too.

CHASE

What if we went hiking?

JACK

Hiking?

JACK scrunches his eyebrows and scowls.

JACK

Can we at least bring weed?

CHASE

I can't turn down that.

ARMANI

Agree. So it's a plan.

ARMANI claps his hands together.

ARMANI

Pack weed, snacks and water, head out, and hike.

JACK snaps his fingers and points at ARMANI.

EXT. OUTSIDE - IN THE TREES GOING UP A HILL

CHASE, ARMANI, and JACK each have backpacks on and are hiking up a big hill.

CHASE

Sorry. I thought it'd be shorter.

ARMANI is behind CHASE with JACK right behind him. JACK takes deep breaths while taking a break and taking out his water bottle. ARMANI stops as well and grabs out his water bottle.

ARMANI

It's not too bad. It's just that shit show in the back that'll be complaining later.

JACK

Hey. (Deep breath) I'm not complaining. (Deep breath) I'm actually quite enjoying myself.

JACK dumps some of his water bottle on his head. CHASE rolls his eyes and turns around. They each continue up the mountain.

KAYLA

It's 68 degrees out today.

The image of a police officer suddenly flashes in front of CHASES eyes.

KAYLA

Buckle up your backpack. There's wind coming.

They continue on up and come to the end of the tree-line and now just rocks. The sun shines down on them as they each step out into it. They each look up and admire the sun.

JACK

Damn it is a beautiful day.

They continue hiking and make their way up the rocks. They crawl up and make it to a point where the trail goes downward. CHASE looks up at the hill at the big rocks. CHASE points up towards them.

CHASE

What if we just took that way?

ARMANI

Off the trail?

JACK

Ooo. Sounds dangerous.

JACK flutters his fingers like he's doing a magic trick. ARMANI lets out a huff and then shakes his head.

ARMANI

Whatever. Let's do it.

They continue hiking up the rocky hill, holding onto the ground as they go.

JACK

It's like a wave.

JACK stands on his side with one leg lower than the other and holds out his arms horizontally. They each laugh and then continue hiking up. CHASE leads the front and comes up near the top. CHASE reaches up and starts to pull himself up when suddenly a big gust of wind comes. CHASE knocks his head on the rock in front of him. ARMANI falls forwards too, scraping his knee. JACK remains fine and keeps hold of the rocks below him.

CHASE

Holy shit.

CHASES vision goes black for a second and then comes back normal.

ARMANI

Everyone okay?!

JACK

I'm still good and surfing.

CHASE

I whacked my head.

ARMANI

Oh shits, dude. We can check it at the top. Are we almost there?

CHASE pulls himself up and crawls the rest of the way to the top. ARMANI and JACK follow behind him and do the same. Surrounding them are mountains. They each go in a circle as they admire every mountain. JACK comes up behind CHASE and pats him on the shoulder.

JACK

Smart idea, buddy. But enjoying a scene calls for smoking weed. Plus it might help your head.

ARMANI

That might make it worse.

CHASE shrugs. JACK pulls out a joint from his cigarette pack from his pocket. They each sit down and pull out snacks too.

CHASE

You know, there was once A Swiss herdsman who was going to see his girlfriend and had a run in with the devil. I looked it up because of my dream last night.

JACK hands the joint over to CHASE and he takes a long hit off it. CHASE then hands the joint over to ARMANI.

CHASE

I guess he was standing on a precipice when he shouted out, "I wish that the devil were here to make me a bridge to the other side!" Soon the devil was standing beside him, and said, "If you will promise me the fist living thing that walks across it, I will build a bridge for you that you can use from now on to go across and back." The herdsman agreed and once the bridge was finished he drove a goat across the bridge ahead of himself and followed behind so that he wasn't the first to cross.

ARMANI

This is a tale from Switzerland?

ARMANI hands the joint back to JACK. CHASE nods his head.

CHASE

I think it's connected to my dream from last night.

JACK

You ran into the devil in your dream? Now that's a freaky one.

CHASE shrugs.

CHASE

It's not like I actually ran into the devil.

KAYLA

You've always got me though.

ARMANI

You've always got her though.

ARMANI and JACK laugh and CHASE looks down.

INT. INSIDE - DAY - IN ARMANI'S CAR

> TIGHTEN UP BY THE BLACK KEYS PLAYS ON THE RADIO.

They drive down a dirt road in ARMANI'S car. JACK and CHASE are both smoking cigarettes with the windows down while ARMANI holds his vape in his hands.

ARMANI

Are you having Lia over tonight?

JACK

Yeah. We're having a pizza and movies night. Probably get some more weed in there too.

ARMANI

What about you Chase? You have any plans tonight?

CHASE

Studying. I have a math final coming up.

CHASE looks out the window and throws the rest of his cigarette out into the wind.

JACK

By the way, what languages are you doing these days, dude? Lia and I have just been curious.

They suddenly come up on a man. He is in a white shirt and khakis from behind. CHASE gives him a weird look as they drive by him on the dirt road. CHASE looks into the side mirror and sees a design of purple triangles and squares all across his shirt.

CHASE

German.

INT. INSIDE - NIGHT - CHASE'S BEDROOM

CHASE is sitting at his desk writing down math equations. He takes a puff off his cigarette and then lightly taps it on his ash tray. He puts out his cigarette and closes both his notebook and book. He gets in his bed.

CHASE

Alexa, light off.

The light turns off.

KAYLA

The hike was so beautiful today.

CHASE

I'm not in the mood to talk to you.

KAYLA

Do you still want hints?

CHASE stays silent. He looks around in shame, not admitting it out loud but secretly wanting to go back to the hints she'd give him when he first started hearing her voice.

CHASE

Is Devin here?

DEVIN

I'm always here.

KAYLA

He just stays quiet because I'm here.

CHASE

You seem like in a good mood today.

KAYLA

Well that's because it was supposed to be a good day. Now hush to sleep.

CHASE turns on his music.

> YOU'RE GONNA GO FAR, KID BY THE OFFSPRING STARTS PLAYING.

CHASE doses off to the loud music.

INT. INSIDE - NIGHT - CHASES DREAM

CHASE sits inside a car. He looks around. There's someone sitting next to him and two people in the front. He looks outside the windows and there's mountains surrounding him. They glow up like how it'd look if he were on LSD. Time speeds up and suddenly he is inside a police station. He looks around in confusion and starts walking towards the door to leave. He leaves the building and as he does a red car pulls up. The man with the white shirt and khakis from earlier steps out and pulls out a gun. CHASE screams and runs straight towards him. CHASE wakes up from his dream and gets out of bed, grabbing his water and taking a big sip.

CHASE

What the fuck was that?

DEVIL

It was me.

INT. INSIDE - MORNING - THE KITCHEN

CHASE sits on the floor with a cup of coffee in his hands.

CHASE

Maybe I should just do LSD.

DEVIN

Not the worst of options.

KAYLA

Me too. We all need some LSD.

CHASE

Why does your name just have to sound just like the devils while I have a demon here trying to claim they're the devil?

DEVIN

Every demon tries to say they're the devil. You can just tell the difference by our voices. Plus you can see him but you can't see me.

CHASE

Is this because of the weed too? Because you two were already enough.

CHASE gets no reply. He lets out a huff and then grabs his pack of cigarettes. He lights one up.

CHASE

I might as well just start vaping if he's going to keep showing up.

CHASE hears bustling from upstairs and jumps in reaction. ARMANI comes downstairs but still looks tired.

ARMANI

How long have you been up?

ARMANI yawns.

CHASE

Since like 2 a.m. I got woken up by a dream. And then...

CHASE goes quiet and puts his hand to the back of his head, while suddenly staring off into deep thought.

ARMANI

And then?

CHASE

And then it just felt like I couldn't fall back asleep.

ARMANI

Damn, dude. You and these dreams. What was it about?

CHASE

You know what was actually strange about it?

CHASE thinks back on running into that man on the dirt road yesterday.

CHASE

Was I saw a man from yesterday in it. The man that we ran into while driving back. He was just a mile away from the hiking trail.

ARMANI

Oh yeah, that guy. The one with the big shoulders. He kinda looked a bit like a thinner and less happier looking version of one of your worst enemies.

CHASE

Don't even mention his name.

CHASE cringes when thinking of one of his worst enemies and the comparison to the man he saw yesterday.

CHASE

You're right. They do look a bit similar.

ARMANI

Okay. Now you definitely had to have had a dream about this guy or else that's just weird how you're thinking back on him. We only saw him for a quick second too. Why would you have a dream about him?

CHASE

I guess it was just something about his vibe.

ARMANI

Well what was he doing in your dream? Was he out causing horror in the woods.

CHASE

He was holding a gun on me and then I screamed like a goat.

EXT. OUTSIDE - LATER - OUTSIDE ON THE STREET

CHASE is walking down the street smoking a cigarette.

> DASHBOARD BY MODEST MOUSE PLAYS IN THE BACKGROUND.

As CHASE walks he starts to see little flickers of light, like as if shiny stars. He looks up and see the sun, shading his eyes in the process. CHASE keeps walking down the street.

DEVIL

52.1 says run.

CHASE stands still and stiff as a board suddenly. CHASE waits a second to see if anything happens but nothing does. He continues walking down the street as more stars start falling down from the sky. He stares at them in Aww.

INT. INSIDE - AFTERNOON - IN LIBRARY

CHASE is in the middle of a test on his laptop, writing out the equations on a piece of paper in front of him and then typing in the answers. He starts to become stressed when suddenly coming upon answers he can't solve. His brain becomes completely blank, worse than he's used to.

CHASE

What's the answer Kayla?

DEVIL

It's Mount Adams. Wait no, it's Mount Katahdin. Oh no, it might be Mount Washington. Or maybe it's just an animal.

CHASE becomes frustrated but goes back to his test anyways. He continues on and tries his best with the answers but is still stressed. Suddenly, before his eyes like as if his mind is a movie theatre screen, there is a tall skinny man with a bald head in an officers uniform with a projector screen in front of him. On the projector is a big square with four individual smaller squares throughout it with different answers in the middle of them. The tall skinny bald man has a long stick and is pointing at the four different answers in front of him. He points to one and CHASE does out the problem on his test and gets the same answer. He continues on with the test and the same time he keeps looking at the answers the man gives him and redoing them out on his paper until he's done.

THROUGHOUT THE WHOLE PROCESS THE MAN IS MAKING MANY DIFFERENT WEIRD FACIAL EXPRESSIONS.

Once CHASE is done he hits finished and sends the test in. He closes his laptop and puts it in his bag. He puts his bag over his shoulder.

CHASE

Goodbye.

LIBRARIAN

Goodbye. Have a great day.

While walking out of the library a movie in the advertising area catches his attention. It's the Spirit movie but CHASE ignores it. He thinks back on his dream about the bridge. He starts walking over to the fable section.

INT. INSIDE - NIGHT - LIVING ROOM

> JUMP CUT TO:TV PLAYING

The TV plays, while CHASE, ARMANI, JACK, and LIA each sit on the couch and ground in front of it. There's smoke throughout the room while they each smoke off a joint. CHASE suddenly starts to feel uncomfortable, as if he's smoked too much. His hands start to grow sweaty and then start to tingle.

CHASE

Hey guys. I think I have something going on.

ARMANI

What's up, dude?

CHASES chest locks up and his breathing starts to become off balance. CHASE gets up from his seat and starts heading towards the bathroom.

ARMANI

Everything okay?

CHASE ignores ARMANI and continues into the bathroom, closing the door behind him.

INT. INSIDE - NIGHT - THE BATHROOM

CHASES breathing starts growing more and more rapid and he starts having a panic attack. While having the panic attack images start flashing before CHASES eyes. He sees a red haired woman with her hair back in two low buns. She looks intoxicated as she tumbles on the sidewalk. Out of a convenient store walks a tall thin man in a gray suite with the same hairstyle as CHASE just red hair instead of strawberry blonde, like himself

EVERYTHING EXCEPT THE PEOPLE AND THE LIGHT OF A STREET LAMP IS GREEN.

CHASE

Who is that?

CHASE starts shaking, suddenly growing very cold. He continues having a panic attack and turns on the water. He gets down to just his underpants and sits inside the tub, with hot water running down on him. Suddenly the images flash again and this time she's in a cold location. It's just a cold gray floor with green lights covering the outer distance. She holds her legs in to her body and shivers while crying, shaking back and forth.

CHASE

What is going on with me?

There's a sudden knock at the door.

ARMANI

I have lorazepam man.

ARMANI throws the lorazepam under the door. CHASE gets out of tub and grabs them. He takes two and throw them in his mouth. He gets back in the tub and fills his hands up with water, taking a drink of it and swallowing the pills. CHASE gags at the taste of the water.

CHASE

Please tell me that this works.

CHASE starts calming down and doses off for a second. He sees the girl rocking back and forth still.

GIRL

Da da da da da-

CHASE starts rocking back and forth too.

CHASE

Da da da da da.

The girl looks up at CHASE with red fiery eyes.

INT. INSIDE - NIGHT - THE LIVING ROOM

CHASE walks back out into the living room, completely dressed and out of it on lorazepam.

ARMANI

You doing any better man?

LIA

Yeah, you just about gave me a scare there.

CHASE goes and sits down on the ground next to the couch.

CHASE

Yeah, it was just a panic attack I get sometimes when I've smoked too much weed.

JACK

So I'm guessing no more for tonight.

JACK lets out a puff from the joint he's holding. CHASE shakes his head.

CHASE

Nah. I'm good for tonight.

CHASES eyes are a bit hazy from his medicine as he starts dozing off again.

CHASE

Is there like a new serial killer on the loose or something? Or a kidnapper?

ARMANI scrunches his eyebrows in question.

JACK

There's always serial killers everywhere. The FBI just pretends there aren't. You just wait. Soon there's going to be documentaries about all the different killers from the 2010s.

LIA

Why isn't there more? Netflix is always showing the old and single murderers.

CHASE stands up and walks into his room while LIA, JACK and ARMANI continue talking. He comes back out holding his laptop and takes a seat beside the couch again. He starts looking up murders in the area but only finds drownings and murders that have already been solved.

ARMANI

What about that guy who murdered in The United Kingdom. They found an arm in a box in one of those scenes.

JACK

No let's do the other one in The United Kingdom. The one who killed the female sex workers and they caught him one night in his car.

LIA

Or we could just watch a comedy?

LIA looks down at CHASE and shrugs her shoulders uneasily.

LIA

I mean Chase did just have a panic attack less than twenty minutes ago.

CHASE continues searching on his laptop but can't find anything.

CHASE

For fucks sakes.

ARMANI

Woah, what is it?

JACK

I agree with a comedy movie now.

CHASE closes his laptop.

CHASE

No it's just that I can't find anything other than drownings.

ARMANI

What's the need to know anyways?

CHASE

I had a vision while I was having my panic attack. It just seemed like someone was missing.

ARMANI

Did you check missing persons?

CHASE

I would but there's always a ton of missing persons. Sometimes its just people running away anyways.

JACK

That's what it was when it was me.

LIA

Please, never do that to me.

JACK and LIA kiss softly.

ARMANI

What if you just waited until you have the vision again and try to look harder at the person. At least try to make it so it's not when you're having a panic attack this time too.

CHASE

Yeah, that's true. Always a chance for another vision.

DEVIL

You know that's true.

JACK

And onto comedy we go.

JACK starts playing a movie and turns the television up loudly.

> FADE IN: THE TV PLAYS LOUDLY AND THE LIGHTS FADE AWAY
